Hillcrest Golf Club at Sun City West
Played On 07/10/2023Great Layout, Louzy Condition
We started playing Hillcrest back in the late 80's. It was once a majestic course that hosted both Senior PGA Tour and LPGA golf tournaments. Over the last decade the course has fallen into more of a dog track with fairways exhibiting bald spots and bunkers more like rock pits. A creek that ran through several holes on the course was dry.
The course is located in the middle of Sun City West, a retirement community that has it own private Country Club, four regulation and three executive courses. This once fine golf course is now been reduced to sad golfing experience.
The Club at Emerald Hills
Played On 08/01/2018Gem of a Golf Course
My first time playing at the course and it was extremely challenging and quite difficult. First off this is a longest golf course in Florida playing at 7800+ yards from the ridiculous tips. Multiple tee boxes allow golfers to choose their punishment. Gets even more brutal if the rough is up (as was our case). Large undulating greens were fast and tricky to read. Sand in the bunkers seemed firm but not too terrible. Water is prevalent around the course, especially on the par 3's. The last 2 finishing holes are especially tough. This golf course is located in a nice community and has a beautiful club house with full facilities. Staff was friendly and inviting. Our lunch was also very good. I am looking forward to giving it another whirl soon.
The Senator Course at Shula's Golf Club
Played On 10/11/2016Messy Day
The course was very soggy. Weather conditions on this day was windy, wet and rainy. Played the front side twice as the lower laying back side was cart path only. It's nice and challenging track when the conditions are better. Staff was friendly. Shula's restaurant is excellent and can be pricey.
Legend at Arrowhead, The
Played On 08/29/2016Not Quite Legendary
This Arnold Palmer designed course is located in the NW valley and winds through the Arrowhead Ranch developments. It contains a very challenging layout with a few elevation changes, generous fairways, strategically located bunkers and undulating quick greens. Water comes into play on several holes. My only complaint are the bunkers. They are hard pack dirt! If this course added real sand to them this course could be a real gem. Overall, the fairways were very nice and the ruff wasn't too bad. There were some bald spots on the course, but it's summer time conditions. Greens fees are very attractive.
Championship at Moon Valley Country Club
Played On 10/28/2015Gem in the Desert
This was my first time playing this old school private Country Club. They allow limited outside play and since this course was on my golf bucket list I jumped at the opportunity. Great practice facilities with a couple of putting greens by number 1 & 10. The course layout has scenic views with mature trees lining the fairways and water on several holes. They were still in over-seed (cart paths only) so the ruff was up and the fairways were a little shaggy, slowing our play, yet we still finished in under 4 hours. The greens looked dry and less green than the surrounding grass but they were quick and challenging. Make sure to bring a range finder/GPS as the course was poorly marked with practically no yardage markers marked found on the fairways or cart paths. Bunkers were firm and mostly dirt. Pro Shop staff was friendly and treated non-members courteously and professionally. The Club House was surprisingly nice inside with a decent bar. The restaurant provided an average lunch menu, but found the food to be nothing special. I will definitely play this course again if the opportunity present's itself again.
Wigwam Resort - Gold Course
Played On 07/17/2015Revisit to Wigwam
Only my second time playing at Wigwam. Played the Heritage course as a single but got paired up with a threesome. The course was a typical old school layout. Mature trees line the adequate fairways and not much rough. There was some water hazards and a couple of forced carry's. Found the bunkers to be more dirt than sand, yet not to challenging. The greens rolled fairly true. A few greens displayed bare spots, but hey it's summer in Arizona! Overall a fun and enjoyable course. The entire staff were friendly and courteous. Next time I'll play the Gold course (was closed).
The Legacy Golf Club
Played On 06/08/2015Great Course
The course lived up to its hype. Excellent conditions throughout. Deep and tough bunkers. Greens were fast and true. Pace of play was good, just under 4 hours. A challenge for any golfer. The entire staff was attentive and freindly. Legacy Grill offered excellent food and drinks.
Club West Golf Club
Played On 06/01/2015A First Timer
Club West was an interesting Desert/Mountain layout. Course conditions were typical for Arizona in the summer time, some dry spots, but overall OK. Bunkers had slightly damp sand. Greens had lots of ball marks and were fairly quick. They rolled true and away from South Mountain. Scenic Par 3's on the back side will challenge your club selection. Staff was friendly. Overall, the course was fun, however it's some distance from the north valley.
Villa de Paz Golf Course
Played On 01/13/2015Oldie Goldie
This course is in an older part or town and this is reflected in the layout and conditions. Parts of the course can be labeled shabby. Greens were in decent shape. Bunkers were firm sand with really rough edges. With a little maintenance it could be a fun layout, but there is little chance given the neighborhood.
Tres Rios Golf Course at Estrella Mountain Park
Played On 1/25/2013Tres Rios GC
Started out with a frost delay. After thawing out for 30 minutes we tee off to an interesting golf course. Nestled at the base of the Estrella Mountains the course offers tree lined grassy fairways. Miss the fairways and you'll likely end up getting blocked by the trees or lying in dirt and/or deadpan. There is very little rough. The bunkers around the greens are firm with dirt base. The greens were surprisingly quick and in good condition. There is water but it's only found on three holes. Tres Rios is a bit out of town but the rates are good and you'll find this course fun!
Palmbrook Golf Club
Played On 1/22/2013PalmBrook Country Club
This old school course offers a nice layout with ample fairways. The front 9 is tree lined and fairly well bunkered, while the back 9 opens up and is slightly shorter with water running along almost every hole. The greens were in very good condition with a combination of smooth undulating surfaces and interesting pin placements. They rolled quick and true yet had some deceiving breaks. We found PalmBrook Country Club to be a fun course.
Copper Canyon Golf Club - Vista/Lake Course
Played On 1/8/2013Interesting Layout.
The golf course was in good condition. Typical Troon golf course layout with well bunkered fairways and some large greens. The front nine was nicely laid out. The back nine was slightly more challenging with water on several holes. One oddity was the lengthy ride to get to a few holes which almost seemed off the property. Otherwise the course offered top notch practice facilities, very nice club house and a super friendly staff.
Coldwater Golf Club
Played On 12/4/2012The course looked nice, but!
We played Coldwater in early December and were kind of surprise by the course conditions. The fairways were lush but a little shaggy and really needed to be mowed. Most bunkers had sufficient soft sand yet a few had some hard pack and even wet areas. Surrounding ravines and collection areas were very firm and even muddy in a few spots. While the greens putted true we found them to be firm and slower than usual. Overall this course should be in very nice condition in the next couple of weeks with some additional maintenance and a little TLC.
