Deep Cliff Golf Course
Played On 06/23/2022Lots of work to do
I played here a lot about 10 years ago and the return was an anticipated event. Sorry to say, the course was in disrepair with tee boxes closed or bare, fallen trees on the course and in Stevens Creek, and piles of wood chips and debris scattered about. The greens were in good shape, if slow and spongy. Some traps had been turned into sod bunkers and the course was generally easier than I remember it. It's still a fun little course to play but it could be a gem with some attention and investment.
Forest Greens Golf Club
Played On 04/19/2021Tarnished gem
This a great parkland golf course, designed by Clyde Johnston, that rolls over a beautiful property adjacent to the Prince William Forest Park. Every hole has a unique character and challenge. The collection of par 3's is outstanding. The issues to be addressed are the bunker conditions and the greens. The bunkers are well-designed but poorly drained and maintained. There are deep pools of standing water & leaves in many of them and weeds growing in most. The bent grass greens are succumbing to poa and will be lost before long. They did roll well but suffer from the curse of golfers who don't repair their ballmarks.
Potomac Shores Golf Club

A Jack Nicklaus course sets expectations. If you only focus on the layout and the fairways, this is a 4- star experience. The horrible conditions of the greens with bare patches, fungus and general poor maintenance makes this a 2-star frustration. The tee boxes are in equally poor condition with little apparent attention. This course is a year or two from being playable. Too bad. Stay away until then...
The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
Played On 10/08/2018Sooo tough... wear a thick skin and take your medicine(s)
Beautiful day on the course, but a few things let to a serious mental beat-down. The rough was deep, thick and damp which is where I ended up a few times from the slope in the fairways. No consistent ball contact from there... The greens were maddening, with a combination of fast speed and quick, imperceptible breaks. Many of the greens have some serious slope and undulation which leads to approach shots trickling away from their landing spot, leaving you with much longer putts than the quality of the shot deserve. I've played here a few times a year for the last 30 years, from the blue tees until this year. Even with the substantial length advantage that the white tees afford, I was left frustrated by experience of shooting 90 against an 8 index. Love the course layout with so many unique holes, but I was muttering to myself on the drive home...Yes, I will be back!
Moffett Field Golf Club
Played On 06/08/2017Getting better and better...
I've played here about 5 times in the past two months after being away for 10 years. Apparently Google has taken responsibility for much of the Moffett Field infrastructure and is making a visible effort to improve the course. They've trimmed the trees and removed some other trash trees to open up the sight lines around the course. The poa greens are in good shape and run firm and fast. The fairways are a mixed bag due to the low lying flat terrain and Bay proximity. Some areas around the course have patches of bare/thin grass. Where bermuda/kikuyu has taken over, the ball sits up nicely. They're rebuilding the teeboxes one at a time and I expect the overall conditions to continue to improve. As to the course, layout there are some sharp doglegs and a quirky mix of holes that go out toward the airfield and back to the clubhouse on each of the nines. With the prevailing bay breezes, there are some challenging 200 yd. par 3's and longish par 5's to keep your attention. The daily fee is $37 for walkers and the staff is extremely courteous and helpful. The range is scruffy but the chipping and putting areas are well-maintained.
