El Dorado at Quail Valley Golf Course

Hard course though room to hit it off the tee. Greens are really tough - lots of contour and tough to read. Good conditions And great value for this part of the country.
Laguna Seca Golf Club
Played On 10/23/2019Good value for the Peninsula
I hadn't played Laguna Seca since my college years 30+ years ago. It was just how I remembered it, fairly short but pretty and a fun layout in above average condition. If you are realistic and not expecting a Pebble or Spyglass type of course - it is a solid course that is fun to play.
San Juan Oaks Golf Club
Played On 05/28/2018Fun course
I played in a twosome with my wife who has played professionally. We loved the course except for two things. First, the pace of play was very slow - around 4:45. Also, as noted in other reviews, the bunkers were hard and didn't have much sand. The fairways and teeing grounds were as good as it gets, and the greens far above average. Good layout - hard but very fair. Great value - I assume the slow play was because it was Memorial Day.
The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
Played On 12/29/2017Great value, hard golf course
I played the pre-renovation Bayonet frequently in my high school and college years in the 70's -80's and it was the toughest course on the peninsula. The renovations (about 10 years ago) were great - cut back the trees a bit and improved the conditions, but still the same footprint. Still really hard, but a bit fairer off the fairway and balls rarely stay up in the trees now. Great layout, great views. The greens were so firm and fast it was a bit unfair. Had a great round through 15, then knocked 40 footer on 16 off the false front and 30 yards down a hill. In spite of that frustration, a wonderful day of golf for a reasonable price.
Poppy Hills Golf Course
Played On 12/26/2017Great renovation
Played yesterday on a cool, beautiful sunny winter day. Course was in excellent shape, greens medium fast. The fairways are firm and fast so it doesn't play quite as long as the scorecard, but it's still a heck of a challenge that tests every part of your game. You can use some of the greenside slopes to your benefit, particularly to the right of par 3 11th and par 3 18th. Putting can be deceiving if you don't pay attention to the overall slope of the land towards the ocean. Staff was very friendly. Only complaint was no beverage cart and the halfway house was closed. The restaurant is great but its a full service restaurant and not a place to pick up a quick snack at the turn. NCGA members have a gem - great value at the NCGA member rate.
