Torwoodlee Golf Club
Played On 05/22/2023Borders Break
This is a challenging course--not somewhat nor very--because it is all up and down and sideways. It is scenic, and not too long, but my wife found it hard to get any rhythm and distance. Well, I did too. The greens were pretty good, consistent and not too fast. Tees, though, were quite messy and uneven. They bring down the rating. Even so, the fantastic walk and variety leave a positive impression. Some might need a buggy...

Sunday midday, and a nice and quiet course. We could play the whole round at our own pace.
It's a rich, beautiful estate. The golf is sort-of-American, with springy, not tight fairways, and long, sticky semi-rough. This was really the only bother, as you could easily take time looking for a ball just off the fairway. Greens were good. the course is not too long off the yellows, but the second half has one or two long drags if you're getting tired! Definitely worth a trip.

This is quite long, with lots of humpy-bumpy fairways, but always an intriguing, fair challenge. Tees were a bit less good, but the greens were beautifully fast and true. a very enjoyable experience.

Heavy showers and pretty strong winds made for a very difficult not pleasant outing. Still, warm, sunny day needed!
This is just too much up and down, with difficult, sometimes blind drives, lots of slopes and trees, and tricky greens. Play with a member would be a great help.
And bring your best ball striking.
Troon Links - Fullarton

This is the most 'friendly' of the municipal Troon courses. It is naturally flat, not too long and in reasonable condition. A good course for those not too used to links!'

The course was beautifully greened up after the long brown spell, with smooth greens and grassy fairways. Some bunkers and some tees are under the weather, but this is a scenic, rolling, beautiful parkland (Scottish) course.

This course has some very 'interesting' holes on the back nine, after a relatively straightforward front. It's rolling, slopey and quirky. Conditions of fairways and greens were not tiptop, but they were playable and acceptable. Upland-parkland would be about right.

A lovely, bright but somewhat breezy afternoon. Two of us had a great time coming to grips with an amazing, rolling, open, challenging high-up course of old-style design. Blind shots and crossovers do have some effect, but they are 'softened' by the excellent conditions.

Lovely day, with glorious Scottish flora. The course was in excellent condition, with fast and true greens, and good width for driving. It's very much a case of two halves. The first is on the side of a hill, so every shot is rolling down one way or the other. The second is relatively flat, though holes are a bit samey. There's challenging length throughout, with water also to fly directly over, as well as ditches, burns, and small ponds at intervals. The back nine can be unexpectedly wet underfoot. That said, design is good--not excessively 'modern', so bunkers are strategically placed, giving several choices. Worth a trip.

First nine not so good, with basic fairways and greens and awkward layouts.
Second nine much more interesting, with all aspects of good quality.
Leaves a good taste!

This is an enjoyable, straightforward course, in good, dry condition, with water --but not too much.

We enjoyed our round, but found conditions disappointing because of soggy surfaces. Too much watering? This was the wettest course of our whole holiday.
Layout is fine, with varied, not too long holes.

Everything was fine, from value to weather to course conditions to staff friendliness. Just one oddity. We were a 2-ball. At the 8th., out-of-the-blue, a 3-ball appeared, delaying us all the way up the 9th. As they drove off the 10th., avoiding our gaze, my wife asked if they would let us through. No. Were they members? Should we (not) have asked? The response was a not nice surprise.

Played On 04/11/2017Unexpected Mackenzie
This course has all sorts of samples of the famous doctor's designs: blind tees, two or three slope/plateau greens, lurking bunkers and burns. On a windy day, challenging indeed. Course conditions are reasonable without being especially neat and tidy--explaining perhaps the extremely competitive Hot Deal. Well worth a visit, though.

October day with substantial dew, so mostly wet underfoot. Calm at first, but with a stiff breeze later.
Fairways nice and wide, with good turf. A fairly standard parkland start and finish, but quirky, awkward (challenging?) holes 10 through 13. The greens are sensibly accessible and nicely sloped, but--the one main problem--for our round they were almost all substantially sanded, so putting was hardly possible, or at least relevant. Still, we enjoyed ourselves, giving each other two putts at each hole...

Booked this course not realising it was so short, even though the cost was extremely low. Decided it would be nice to have a relaxed round practising the short game--and that is exactly what happened. A fun, fair course with good variety and reasonable conditions.

One of the better courses in the Tampa area, with a good variety of fair and challenging holes.
Murrayshall House Hotel & Golf Club - The Lynedoch Course
Played On 08/03/2015Hilly Variety
A windy round, basically dry, but on a course much affected by unseasonably wet and cold weather. A difficult start, with ravines on the first two holes. From three to twelve the course is at its best, with superb views and great variety. From thirteen on it becomes quirky and pretty wet. Trolley paths are hazardous, following holes that are up and down and roundabout. It's challenging. You have to watch everything. You need dry conditions for it to be real fun. Overall, though, it's worth a visit.
Moray Golf Club - The New Course
Played On 08/01/2015A true links
Nice welcome from the pro, who explained how to reach the New course by walking out one hole's length from the Old course first. Very good tees and superb greens. It would all be an "excellent" but for the condition of some fairways near the beach in more definite dune areas, where the surfaces were patchy and knobbly. In a crosswind the course was tricky, but there is plenty of run, so length is not a big problem. One or two extra balls would help!
( My wife, a 26 handicap, made 39 Stableford points, by staying straight and getting the extra run)
Grantown-on-Spey Golf Club
Played On 07/30/2015Tricky Braid
This is a course that is most attractively situated, in excellent condition. Unusually for Scotland, though, it puts bunkers and hazards right on the landing-area of my Senior 17-hcp second shots, 'forcing' me to play most of the par 4s as 5s (not all, of course). This is typical of the modern courses of Spain and Portugal, though the customary James Braid subtleties attract and irritate in equal measure! It's still fun, but since we were also held up for quite a while behind a competition, that explains the "Good" rather than "Excellent". Longer hitters will certainly enjoy the course a lot.
