The Club at Los Rios
Played On 9/27/2013Brand New Greens Are Great
I was welcomed cordially with my Golf Now voucher and paired up with 3 other players. Was told the new greens have been open about 3 days - and "they are coming along".
This was my first time back to Los Rios in about a year - what a difference! Fairways mowed nicely, tee boxes in good shape (except for one), and the new greens are rolling very well.
It's obvious the owners have put some money into this operation - I found the overall conditioning to be on a par with many of the better courses in the metroplex.
I thoroughly enjoyed my round here - I bet you will too.
Cowboys Golf Club
Played On 9/21/2013One Of the Very Best In the Metroplex
This is one of Jeff Brauer's best architectural accomplishments in the DFW area. I enjoyed playing every hole - especially the holes in the hills. I found the driving areas to be generous enough, and the approach shots a challenge. Greens are interesting with many internal slopes and valleys - nothing flat out here.
#17 is the most interesting par-3 - it looks a lot more intimidating than it really is.
#18 looks full of bunkers - but, if you play it right most are not in play.
The staff is so nice and welcoming - food and snacks along the course included in the green fee - don't forget to tip the girls - they only make about $3 an hour.
Arrive early, have breakfast, play well, have a brat at the grill, play well, go to the club house for dinner and watch a football game - all for one inclusive price - what a great day!
The Golf Club at McKinney
Played On 7/26/2013A Very Good Golf Course
Don't judge G.C.@ McKinney from your drive off the first hole - for the most part the landing areas are generous. Not hard to keep the ball in the fairways - plenty wide except #1, 10 & 11.
I found the fairways in great shape and easy to hit from.
Greens very receptive. Interesting internal movement in many greens - I had to pay attention to breaks and the line to the hole.
Staff was very hospitable - I played 4 holes and the rains came - got a rain check for a full round which I cashed in Friday - very nice.
A good place to play.
The Resort Golf Club
Played On 7/24/2013Good Variety Of Interesting Golf Holes
I enjoy playing at the Resort because of the variety of golf holes.
#'s 1 & 10 demand a straight drive or you can't get to the green.
#3 has a wide landing area with a very narrow approach into a shallow green.
The 2nd shot on #4 is fun because of the lake protecting the green.
The areas of this course that bring it down a little are the 3 fairways (11,12 & 14) that really don't have enough room - there is really room for 2 holes there - not 3.
#16 plays long for me - I usually have to lay-up (be sure to lay-up left of the green or you're wet.
#17 is a short par 4 - fun hole into a small green at the end of the round.
Greens were in good shape when I played.
Old Brickyard Golf Course
Played On 7/03/2013Old Brickyard Is a Challenge - Great Piece Of Land
While #1 is a nice gentle welcoming handshake, #2 is an attention getter. #1 handicap hole very early in the round - even tougher if the wind is from the north. Watch out for the pond on the right.
The most interesting holes start at #5 - a long par 5 with a deep gulch in front of the green.
The holes around the old quarry are all interesting - #8 over the water, #9 through the narrow shoot - takes some precise shot-making. Stay out of the rough on the left.
#10 is just a great par 5 - water in play on the drive, over the water on the 2nd shot, long 3rd into the green over water - good luck on this hole. One of the best par 5's in Texas.
#11 is a fun hole - dogleg left with the water in play on the drive.
I enjoyed my day here - lot's of variety with holes playing in many directions. Par 3's all take a different club.
Lake Park Golf Course - Championship Course
Played On 7/1/2013An Easy Links-Type Course
Lake Park is indeed in a park with most of the holes running parallel to each other. There is a little water here and there, and a couple of holes run along the dam with OB - otherwise it's impossible to lose a ball.
Holes are pretty straightforward with very little bunkering. Greens are in good shape and pretty flat.
Fairways have generous landing areas.
I enjoyed my afternoon there - it was worth the Golf Now Hot Deal.
I can't really think of one memorable hole - I won't be back for a while just because it's not very interesting.
Good place to introduce a young person to the game.
Canyon West Golf and Sports Club
Played On 6/17/2013Good Course - Great Fun
Canyon West is an enjoyable test of golf. Lots of variety in the layout - downhill, uphill; a little rough here and there - most of it not coming into play. There is even a hole with a big tree smack in the middle of the drive - I went around it to the right, but I bet you could try left too.
Generous landing areas off the tee box, with most hazards coming into play closer to the green. Watch out for the hazards on both #4 and #5.
The par 3's each go a different way and have either elevation changes or water. And they each take a different club.
Nice views of the surroundings counties from a few holes.
Tee boxes, fairways and greens in very good shape on my day there. Even though it was a long ride out to Weatherford, it was worth the trip.
Old at Firewheel Golf Park
Played On 6/14/2013Firewheel Bridges - Masters/Tradition
I got there an hour early - checked it and, since the course was clear, they sent me out. Happened to play on ladies day, and the ladies were finishing up - Had the course to myself.
Very interesting, challenging golf holes - fairways wide enough to hit, big bunkers around most greens, and well maintained, smooth running greens.
I liked this course far and away better than the Lakes (sister Firewheel course) - much more playable and not as narrow. When I made the turn, there was a backup on the Champions (where I was supposed to go) - so I suggested to the starter I could play the traditions since I was a single - very nice and said OK.
I had a good time there and will go back.
The Golf Club at Champions Circle
Played On 6/14/2013Good Challenging Golf Holes
Jay Morrish did a super job in redoing this original Greg Norman design - a good group of fair and challenging golf holes.
After an easy handshake on #1, the challenge runs right through #2 - #5. You get a little break, then #9 calls for all you've got.
On the back, #13, #15 and #17 are demanding.
We went out about 30 minutes after a tournament and to our delight the pace moved right along.
The pro shop staff were very friendly and welcoming with out Hot Deal.
Course is in very good shape.
Tanglewood Resort Hotel and Conference Center
Played On 6/11/2013Kind Of Bland North TX Course
There might be 2 memorable holes on this course - #18 is a par 5 dogleg right uphill around a pond and #11 brings water into play on the left off the tee.
Most of the course is flat and predictable - not very interesting.
I found the greens to be in really good shape - two days after a big rain.
Staff was nice.
I pretty much had the course to myself with a 1:30 tee time - really easy to get around in just a little over 2 1/2 hours.
Irving Golf Club
Played On 6/3/2013Hard Ground and Standing Water
Twin Wells is convenient to central metroplex not too far from old Texas Stadium. I found the fairways and greens pretty hard - yes, that does lead to some good rolls of the ball. The grass in general looked unkempt and basically ignored.
With the West Nile concerns, I would be worried about the standing water around #2, the bridge on #7, and a few other places.
The course was fairly unoccupied when I last was there, so pace of play was as fast as I wanted to play.
I enjoy the group of holes on the back that are away from the main piece of land - that tempting little par 4 sucks me in most every time I have played there.
I'll probably be back just because it's so convenient and the hot tee times are so reasonable - but, I wouldn't go out of my way to play it.
Tierra Verde Golf Club
Played On 5/23/2013One Of the Best In DFW
After a few holes it's easy to see why Arlington is so proud of this course. There are plenty of demanding shots required off the tee along with trouble on both sides of most fairways - I started out with trouble right on hole one.
The par 3's all take a different club and are affected by the prevailing wind.
Many elevation changes here make this a course demanding a variety of shots - I always struggle on the uphill par-5.
A couple of holes have a creek crossing the fairway - usually right where I hit it.
Staff was very nice both in the golf shop and on the course.
Good value here.
Cleburne Golf Links
Played On 4/22/2013Golf With Great Lake Views
If you enjoy golf with views of a lake on almost every hole, Cleburne Links is the place for you.
The Links plays mostly north and south - wind with you on the front and against you on the back (for the most part).
There is ample space here with generous driving areas, and nary a bunker to impede your approach to the greens.
The greens have plenty of internal movement, and going long generally puts you in a steep catchment area - be short and below the hole if you can.
The par-3's all play to a different direction - basically N,S,E & W. A couple of them are uphill and play over water. #8 plays out into the lake - very peaceful out on that green.
Holes 5 and 12 share a great big double green, and #5 has a double fairway - I played it to the right with success.
I was running a little late for my prepaid time, called the pro-shop and Jimmy said "no problem, we'll fit you in" - and he did. Nice people running this course - right down to Felix out there on a mower.
It was a good golf experience for me - I think you'll like it too.
Texas Rangers Golf Club
Played On 4/19/2013Tough On A Windy Day
I enjoy the variety of golf holes on Ditto. #1 is a downhill with the southern wind, while #2 is solidly uphill and directly into the wind. The par 3s each take a different club, play different directions and elevation changes. The 5th hole always plays hard for me - hit it down the right and bring the water into play or down the left and take the green out of play. There are quite a few elevation changes on this course - many of the uphill holes into the wind - Tough!
15, 16, 18 all take very well placed drives.
Condition was typical for a mid-priced municipal course.
The Links at Land's End
Played On 4/1/2013Serene Waterfront Views
Holes 6 through 12 are what make this experience so pleasant - all run hard against the lakefront of Lake Fork. It's almost like you're playing on an island in the middle of the lake. The holes are laid out well - a couple of doglegs create interest and a couple of short par 4's give the big hitters something to go for.
The rest of the course is comprised of rather uninteresting, benign holes - hit it into a generous driving area and hit it onto the green. Fairways were just a little thin this time of year - should be much better with warmer weather. Greens were very puttable and the ball rolled true.
Getting to "Lands End" took a little doing - I recommend calling once you get to Yantis. It's about 120 miles from the DFW airport. I enjoyed the day.
Crystal Falls Golf Course
Played On 3/29/2013It's a 5 in my book!
Tucked at the western edge of the Crystal Falls community is this gem of a golf course. I was greeted by Jeff and Larry in the pro shop - they were just a nice as can be even though I was a little late with my Golf Now prepaid tee time. They worked me in with a 2-some and wished me a good round.
The course is in very good condition contrary to some other reviews - fairways and greens well maintained.
Most holes have generous landing areas off the tee with the holes getting more challenging as you get closer to the green. The holes narrow up, but no bunkers. Greens have plenty of movement - more break than I read on most putts.
Front 9 plays a loop through a series of canyons - very enjoyable landscape. Back 9 is a out-and-back routing, with 2 narrow holes side by side.
3 of the par 3's are basically the same distance, but they don't play that way. Two with major downhill changes in elevation.
Overall, I really liked the course - it felt like a country club. You won't be disappointed. Bring your "A" game - this is not an easy golf course.
Lost Creek Golf Course
Played On 3/27/2013Tee to Green = Awful Condition
I picked a $9 Hot Deal - it's worth about that. Tee Boxes, fairways and rough is all dried up or bare ground. If you like "hard and fast" with very close lies, you'll like this course.
Greens were pretty good actually - very fast and hard - I bet they stimped at tour speeds.
This course has potential in it's design and layout - many interesting holes that require thought and shotmaking ability.
On the front 9 , many of the holes roll the ball left - be careful.
Lots of water needed here.
Southern Oaks Golf Club
Played On 12/1/2012It Still Has A Way To Go
I haven't played here in over a year - I heard it's improved during the last 6 months.
I found the conditions just OK - still many spots on the fairways without grass.
Greens are OK - Mark Brooks put in some interesting undulations that make putting a challange. Grass OK and speed OK.
The par 3's all take a different club and go in a different direction - nice variety. I think the most interesting hole is #16 - water in play on the left and in front of the green - tough par on this dogleg left.
Cross Timbers Golf Course
Played On 11/16/2012Lot's Of Variety
The routing at Cross Timbers yields a good variety of interesting golf holes - two of the first 3 require forced carries off the tee.
The course does get a little tedious up on top of the main plateau with a bunch of straight, parallel holes - even there you better keep it in the fairway as there plenty of trees and rough outside the sight lines.
The par 3's each go in a different direction - two of them are over 200 yards from the tips. #9 is a wonderful little hole right up against the hillside.
The fairways are closely mowed and the greens are fast.
Take a minute and look at the view from the little picnic area in back of the #10 tee box.
#16,17 and 18 are 3 good finishing holes - especially 17 driving out of the chute.
A fun place to spend a day of golf.
Waterview Golf Club
Played On 11/14/2012A Straight Forward Test Of Your Game
This is a "hit it down the middle", housing development on all sides, wide fairways, fairly simple golf course. All the holes are straight from tee box to green - not a dogleg to be found. There is a lot of water on the back 9, but only in play on #14. The #9 green has water primarily on the right.
My round there was enjoyable, but not memorable - I'm not sure I could describe one interesting golf hole.
The bunkers are mostly dirt and didn't come into play. The trees are mostly young and didn't come into play.
You should score well here.
We appreciate you taking the time to comment..... Make sure you try our award winning burger the next time out...... also, hole number 5 isn't a double fairway, but I hope you parred the hole from #13 fairway nonetheless.... hahaha
