Huge disappointment

Riverwalk is overpriced most of the time. So, when I saw a walking rate of $50 I was intrigued. They disclosed that #11 was closed. No problem I thought, I often have trouble with that hole. What they did not disclose was that 2 tees were moved, one of them WAY up, making a fun/challenging par 4 into a ho hum par 3. Several fairways were roped off entirely. Not a problem if you walk, but made for a pain as I opted for a cart. Several fairways were being aerated/torn up. All of this was NOT disclosed. So I felt pretty cheated over all, especially when there was no signage to say “hey sorry our course is such a s}€}hole” . My advice would be, play at your own risk!

Low Expectations

First of all, let me state that I read several reviews of this course prior to playing and knew what to expect. Therefore, I kept my expectations low.
Starting in the pro shop; the fella behind the counter was solid. It was apparent he was having a tough day but he treated his customers well. The group in front of me had been over charged and he was very good about getting them their money reimbursed. He did not let this slow him, he treated me professionally and expeditiously.
The range was mats, okay. A small bucket was $6 and got me maybe 3 dozen balls. Standard in my experience.
The Starter? Super cool! Gave me some course specific pointers and paired me with a cool 3-some.
Okay, The Course. Yes everything the reviews say! Very poor condition. I paid $60 with a cart and felt a little robbed. I would go back for $30-$35. It is also a pretty walkable course. I could not get the hang of the greens, but that’s on me! I like the layout! It is a shot makers golf course it is not Bomb a Driver and hit wedge on 14 of 18 holes. Some noce elevation changes, good doglegs! My only issue; I was not aware that there is a lot of OB but very little lateral hazard. So instead of going all the way back to the tee I just treated it like lateral. But not all the stakes are apparent off the tee so it would have been nice to know. With some work and some TLC this could be a legitimate course. Right now it is a mediocre muni that is overpriced.

St Mark

I played somewhere else with a stranger who recommended this course. Remind me to buy that guy a drink. I really enjoyed this course, there is grass in the fairways, the greens were receptive. It is out of the way for me as I live in S County but worth the trip.

Ho-hum

I have definitely seen this track in better shape. There were several fairways where, in spots, it was close to being more dirt than grass. Greens were great, super receptive, fair, not to fast! I got a deal on tee time now, worth it, but glad I did not pay more. I would definitely go back but I think I will play Willow Glen.

Good enough

For all the play this course is getting it is in reasonable shape. The price was a little steep as it was the weekend. There are certain items that I want back that due to the times the course has no control over.

Prom Queen past her prime

Age, drought, and dwindling golf numbers have not been kind to Carlton Oaks. This is a tough course made harder by unreliable lies, patchy fairways, and patchier rough. Previous reviews have summed it all up better than me. I will say that the pace of play was fine. Keep in mind I was playing before 9 on a Wednesday so it should have been.

Worth the trip

I have been playing SVGC for many years now. I have never been disappointed. As I live in San Diego and it is in Ramona it can be a bit of a drive, but is worth the trip. Here’s why: they take care of the course, it is always in reasonable shape. Let’s be honest, it’s not an Aviara where you expect everything to be green, this is a desert course that sees a fair amount of play, the staff are very nice, they are a family friendly resort course so they deal with all sorts. This is not the snooty country club set. My partner and I decided we wanted to go around again, Terry, in the pro shop was very honest and obliging with us, and got us off the first tee right away. It was a great day!
