Red at Bethpage State Park Golf Course
Played On 07/17/2019SLOW Play - Loved the Course
Slow play - teed off at 236pm on a Wednesday. We finished AFTER 8pm. We did not have a single hole where we didn't wait on a tee shot except for #10 but that was because we paused for a few minutes to grab something at the snack shack. We never saw a single staff member out there moving groups along.
The greens were in decent shape - TONS of pitch marks but that's not the courses fault. They rolled reasonably true and were better than most public courses on the speed front.
Price is about average for a muni - can't really complain about that. Staff members were all fairly grumpy but not rude. Our starter for the day was a treat and was good conversation as we waited on our tee time.
Hole #1 still plays as a 95 yard par 3. The fairway was beat down by a huge tent / club during the PGA and it likely won't be playable from the looks of things until next year. The rest of the course was fairly interesting with doglegs everywhere - a lot of the fescue was knocked down giving a better chance of finding your errant swings.
We had the sprinklers turned on us at 3 as we were hitting into the green - so that was obnoxious. It was clear many of the holes were being or had been recently watered.
I will return and hopefully have a better experience with pace of play.
Butternut Farm Golf Club
Played On 07/16/2019Cute little course!
Was in the area for work and played 9 with some coworkers after our day ended.
We walked 9 and finished in about 1:40. The course is reasonably well maintained. It is a very tight course and there are a LOT of trees to contend with. The greens were pretty slow as well.
We enjoyed the round and I'll return next time I'm in the area.
Brook-Lea Country Club
Played On 10/21/2017Beautiful Donald Ross course
This is a no nonsense Ross design. The course is compact and straight forward. Not a single green is easy and even the straight par 4s give a challenge. The greens are well kept and fairways well manicured. All par 5s are reachable with a decent tee shot. Both the front and back end on par 3s.
The staff was friendly and provided any assistance we needed.
Durand Eastman Golf Course
Played On 10/12/2017Could be a gem
This course layout is a favorite of mine. I've always loved playing here. Its warts are myriad but I still come back.
Its biggest drawback is how its run. Being a muni you never see a ranger and play is super slow. If it hasn't been wet the course is usually in solid shape. However it drains like crud so if it's been rainy expect a squishy slog.
It could easily be one of the best courses in town given a resource infusion.
East at Deerfield Country Club
Played On 09/16/2017Great place
Ever since new ownership there have been some great changes here. Major course renovations where needed to improve course conditions.
Play north/South, east isn't worth it.
Swan Lake Resort - Silver Course
Played On 08/04/2017Very fun course
As with the black course my group was here for a weekend outing. As such we played both courses multiple times.
The silver course is a bit "easier" than the black (and a touch shorter from the white tees). Much like the black course, the front is a bit tighter with more water in play. Also like the black the course was in great shape. Even with a lot of rain coming through the greens rolled true and quick.
We will be returning. The staff was fantastic and the course was awesome.
Swan Lake Resort - Black Course
Played On 08/03/2017Great course at a great value!
Played here with a foursome and also with a group of 24 (same weekend). We left our previous group outing location after 16 years and needed somewhere new. Swan Lake was chosen.
I played my first round here on the black course prior to the outing with three others. The course was in fantastic shape. The greens rolled true, the rough while not thick required some effort to extract yourself and the tee boxes were in awesome condition.
The cost for 18 and a cart is right in line with what I like to pay and I feel like I got my money's worth. This particular layout has far more trouble on the front 9 than the back 9. The front is tighter with a lot of water whereas the back has a lot less water and is more open.
We will be returning for sure after having played the two courses on the property a total of six times over the weekend.
Thank you etakmit for the four star rating and review! We hope to see you again soon on your next visit to the area.
