Pasture everywhere

I am a big fan of the Robert Muir Graves designed Northstar up in Truckee and was looking forward to playing this track he designed in suburban Roseville. Let me say that I was stunned at the poor conditioning of the course.
You can see there was once a good golf course here, but that must have been long ago. There were very few cut fairways as I gazed upon hole after hole that looked like prime cow pasture. The course yields little roll due due to the thick, wet grass everywhere and thus plays longer and tougher than the blue tees that showed a 122 slope rating.
The greens were in good shape, but only a few were rolled in the early morning dew. The bunkers were hard as a rock, and many were filled near the brim with water. I would advise to head down the street and play Timber Creek in the Sun City development. That course charges about the same for green fees and is in very nice shape with a bunch of interesting holes.

They turned a Rembradt into a Warhol tomato can and all

I need to preface this review by saying that Poppy Hills was my favorite course in the world before the re-model. This was my first time playing since the extensive re-work of the course, and I have to say I am disappointed. My favorite holes on the old course were 9 through 12, and this is where they have made the most changes.
Let's start with the par-5 9th hole. The new route of the hole has eliminated a series of bunkers along the left side of the fairway and placed a fairway bunker right in the flight path of balls hit to the right center and 220 yards. Needless to say, I found that bunker with a perfect tee shot. Not good. They have moved the green up about 50 yards, which isn't a horrible thing, but made it so rock hard that no approach shots will stick. I hit my approach to the front to a short flag and ended up at the back of the green.

On Number 10, which used to be my favorite hole in golf, they have taken that dramatic green which used to hug the pond and moved it about 50 yards to the right. You are left with this out of the place pond - brackish and ugly with algae - having no bearing on your approach shot to the green. Again, the green was rock hard and wouldn't hold a shot to the green.

The biggest tragedy was re-moving the dramatic par 3 11th and turning it into a re-routed "throw-away" par 3 that most golfers can find the green with a wedge. This is not what I came to Monterey for, folks. I could go on an on about hard greens on every hole that won't hold approach shots, but my ultimate advice is to head over to Ford Ord and play those two magnificent golf courses for less money on Golf Now.

Fyi, the fairway bunkers on #9 were not changed, and the green is exactly in the same position it has always been in. Your drive on #9 either had to hug the center left of the fairway or the far right, still the same.........exactly.
The main change is the waste area all around the green.
keep in mind this is a very short par 5, so if you want to hit a driver, be precise or pay the penalty. Great re-work ncga!

Excellent Time

I usually play this course three times on my summer visits to Tahoe and did so last week. If anything, the course was in the best shape I can remember. Don't believe all the talk about the back side being more challenging, however. The meadow front nine plays longer, has more rough and is more open to the elements. It scores about two strokes tougher for me.

The back side is a wonderful trek through the forest with very gettable holes if you can keep the ball in front of you. The last six holes are the best string of holes on any course in California in my opinion. Instead of forking over $250 for Edgewood or $200 for Coyote Moon, go pay $70 at Northstar and have a nice dinner on the lake. You will feel a lot better about yourself. The clubhouse is very cool at Northstar too with some nice selection of draft beers after the round.
