Played On 10/03/2018Another Course On the Brink
This course used to be well maintained, highly regarded for its fast greens, and lots of play. Not so any more. Pretty ragged with no sand in the bunkers, spotty and rough greens. In all fairness, they are hurting for water so they do the best they can. I hear this course is going to 9 holes in a couple of years, which will be the end of Franklin Canyon.
Deer Ridge Golf Club
Played On 04/26/2018No range, no amenities, poor condition
Wow, this place is really going down. I predict is not long before it goes away. Course conditions in spring should be much better. Greens are rough and slow, sand in traps nonexistent, fairways and tee boxes are mediocre at best.
Paradise Valley Golf Course
Played On 01/31/2018Well maintained and run facility
Course was very good condition after rain the week prior. They actually have Marshall’s on the course monitoring pace of play, although it was still almost 5 hours due to a tournament. Fun course, recommended!
Callippe Preserve Golf Course
Played On 03/07/2014Great early spring round
This course is set back in the hills, and the setting in the spring is beautiful. The layout is challenging, but fair if you play the correct tees for your handicap (see scorecard). The greens could use some work, but in fairness we haven't had the rain we usually get and this was pre aeration.
All in all, we had a great day on an excellent course. Recommended!
Merlot/Chardonnay at Poppy Ridge Golf Course
Played On 01/02/2014Excellent course great layout
Very enjoyable place to play. Highly recommended. The drawback when we played was pace of play-4 3/4 hours is far too long and not a marshall in site.
Roddy Ranch Golf Club
Played On 9/27/2013Always a Good Track
Late summer/early fall are the best times to play here, as the wind dies. The down side is that everything is very dry-fairways, greens, rough. On a course known for fast greens that don't hold shots well, this is a challenge. Pace of play is slow, but I guess you get what you pay for with cheap greens fees.
Paradise Valley Golf Course
Played On 8/6/2013Nice Greens, some interesting holes
The golf course has a decent layout, and some cool holes. There are no elevation changes, and the course winds among houses so it is not my favorite design. There are some interesting features. There are two holes that have huge oaks in the middle of the fairway that you have to negotiate around or over. The 10th hole not your classic three shot par 5. There are plenty of sand traps filled with course, heavy sand. The greens are in great shape, and roll very true, if a tad slow. This place can get very windy in the afternoon!
As mentioned before, the course is flat and easily walkable. the pace of play was pretty good, at just about 4.5 hours. the rates are reasonable, and the restaurant is very good.
Avila Beach Golf Resort
Played On 7/17/2013Plays Like a Muni, Not a Resort Course
First of all, I have to say that I enjoyed the course. It had some interesting holes. Be aware that the white tees play much shorter than the yardage on the card indicates, particularly on the front side. If you want more of a challenge, step back to the blue tees.
The course conditions were good. The greens had this odd crosshatch cutting that I had never run across before but they rolled true, if a bit slow.
The staff was non-existant. I got there at 7:20 for an 8:16 start time, and was surprised that there was no bag drop. I have no problem carrying my own bag, but I thought this was a resort
course. As I passed the Bar/Grill, I wanted to get a cup of coffee. No luck, it was closed. I found the pro shop, and there was one person working there who signed me up for a cart and said, "Head out whenever you want". I asked if there was anyone else around to play with, and he said no. I was surprised at this, but that's OK. I hit a few golf balls on the irons-only range (this is not a good practice facility), and looked for the starter at the first hole. There was nobody, so I teed up and off I went.
The Ranch Golf Club
Played On 4/30/2013Forced carries, no bailouts, no fun
The most ridiculous course I have played. Crammed in a bunch of houses and tricked up to make it stupidly difficult, a first time player has no chance. It will be my last time.
Eagle Vines Golf Club
Played On 3/28/2013Could Be Really Good-Pace of Play Kills It
Over 5 hours on a Thursday? Are you kidding me? Put it this way. I called the proshop when we were on 11 to send a marshall to speed up play , and they did not. After the round, the starter apologized, and said the marshall called in sick, and they were shorthanded. Enough said. If they speed things up, I would recommend it.
The course itself is really good. Challenging, in decent shape for early spring, some good holes. They had just sanded the tees, so that will improve. The only issue I have is that some of the greens are very tricked up. You need to be on the correct tier or you are dead.
Deer Ridge Golf Club
Played On 2/26/2013Best in Brentwood
Of the three courses out here, this is the most interesting. The front nine is typical houses-on-the-fairway golf (which I detest). The back side, particularly the last half dozen holes, is much more to my liking.
Course conditions are average. Pace of play is very good when I have played, and he price is right!
Boundary Oak Golf Course
Played On 2/1/2013PACE OF PLAY KILLS THIS COURSE
I've played this course many times over the years. I come back a couple of times a year, hoping that they've managed to speed up the pace of play. It just plays SLOW. I talked to the starter at the first tee about it, he says, 'four hours and fifteen minutes, no problem. You can finish before dark". Not! Had to skip two holes on the back. As with many courses, the marshalls just don't want to be confrontational. Sometimes they have to be.
Franklin Canyon Golf Course
Played On 10/11/2012Needs work, slow pace of play, but still a good track.....
I've played this course many time over the past 20 years. Once known for fast, sloping greens and good overall condition, it has gone downhill. Some of the fairways are threadbare, the greens are lumpy and the pace of play, while always a problem (due to 3 par threes on the front side) is slow. There are no marshals on the course, and groups are sent out one after another without regard to timing.
On the plus side, the fairways have been aerated and fertilized, as have the greens. I rate it as average because I like the layout and it has potential. I also recommend the course for the same reasons.
Hawaii Prince Golf Club - A/B Nines
Played On 8/15/2012THE Course to Play on Kauai
Wow, what a course. The pictures don't do it justice. The adventure starts on the first hole with a difficult dogleg left (don't hit driver!), and continues on the front nine with fabulous ocean views and steady trade winds. The back nine enters a canyon, and things really get interesting (and tough). The 13 th hole requires either a long carry off the tee and a short iron or a lay up and play it as a par 5. Behind the green is a lava tube with water shooting out of it. I played with a smile on my face all day. Oh, and bring lots of golf balls. The locals play with range balls (no lie!).
The Ocean Course at Hokuala
Played On 8/13/2012Good but not great
The front nine, Kiele Mauka, is a fairly pedestrian track, neither too easy nor too tough and not very memorable. It is in beautiful condition. The real course is the ocean nine, or Kiele Moana. Spectacular views and challenging holes are abundant. 18 requires a long, accurate drive and a second shot to an island green. If you are going to play only a couple of times on Kauai, I would go elsewhere.
Wrong island.
Wrong course or wrong review. This can't be for Hawaii Prince in Ewa Beach
