Whispering Creek Golf Club
Played On 10/02/2017A stern test, but great shape, a fantastic value, good fun
First, I’m biased - this is my home course, but I guarantee it will not disappoint. It’s hosted the Iowa Amature twice. Matt, the superintendent, keeps the greens rolling at about 11on the stimp, and his team keeps it in great shape. They’ve just redone the bunkers on at least four holes this summer. It’s hilly on the back nine, but walker friendly - I walk all eighteen a couple times a week. Jeff, the pro, and his team in the club house are super friendly. Good variety of equipment, and some rentals if you need them. There is a great range, practice bunker, and huge undulating practice green. Once school starts youll find a local college team, and high school team using the range.
No hidden shots, everything is right in front of you. Left of the fairway in in the creek, right in the fescue... so better hit it straight. Some fun downhill dog leg driveable green on 14,that could end up in the water or a putt for eagle, and take an extra club or two for the up uphill par three 13th. Great finishing holes on 18.
You won’t find a better value for the money. Saturday and Sunday mornings will be full of members, and most morning have the Over The Hill Gang going off early, but they move right along. Call in advance so you don’t run into league play in the afternoon/evenings.
Burned up greens
I'm from Iowa, so maybe this is how it is in Georgia this time of year, but I was surprised how poor the greens were.
Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club
Played On 07/12/2014Pretty views but sloooww greens
Shot one of my best scores, and it a great looking course from tee to green, but the greens were pretty slow - but disclaimer is that I played at 5pm so they'd been played on and growing all day.
The one draw back - there was a foursome playing from the wrong tees that jammed everyone up. They wouldn't take the hint and let anyone through even with us pulling up to them as they were hitting their second off the tees, Rangers needed to kick em in gear.
Blue Top Ridge At Riverside
Played On 07/12/2014Bring the bug spray, but go play it
Been a few years since I'd been to Blue Top. Fantastic shape, and the greens are great. Great practice facility. I got a hot deals time ($40 rather than $80) and had the first tee time so I zipped around, and walked it. I don't think they get a lot of walkers, but aside from two holes it is very walkable.
The one draw back, and it was years ago, the bugs are thick. Just be prepared and buy some spray in the proshop because they don't sell it on the beer cart (they should cause they'd make money)
