Blue Heron Pines Golf Club
Played On 08/20/2020Won’t be back until conditions improve
Course was in terrible shape, the worst I’ve ever played it in, and reading some of the reviews it sounds like it has been that way for most of the last month. Almost every bunker on the course was unplayable. Greens were slow, and fairways were brown and chewed up. Fortunately I got a Hot Deal tee time because I would have been very upset if I paid their normal greens fees. The course was packed on a Thursday so people are still showing up. Overheard staff mention that they won’t be closing to aerate because they’ve been getting so much play and don’t want to lose a few days of business - disappointing to hear given how they’ve pretty much lost the course and it needs the care- seems like this is the philosophy of most of Jaworski’s courses. I usually play here a few times a year but won’t be back until next season.
We did eat in the outdoor seating area after the round and the food and service was pretty good so that was a positive.
Pound Ridge Golf Club
Played On 06/01/2018Good Course but Overpriced
Have been waiting to give this course a try and finally did when I saw a Hot Deal that made it somewhat reasonably priced. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Range balls are complimentary but the balls are limited flight and it was mats only. Range itself is only about 200 yards long. Yardage books are very detailed and complimentary as is the GPS in the cart.
The course itself was a very fun and challenging layout. Don't let your ego get the better of you - play from the correct tees so a good drive carries the trouble. Greens were smooth but slow for an upscale course. Also had a few spots that were patchy but the hole locations were usually away from these spots. There were a few foursomes in front of us and we played at a comfortable pace of just over four and a half hours.
Overall I had a great experience but I don't think the course is worth the sticker price - it should be priced $100-150 which is where the Hot Deals usually have it.
The Course at Wente Vineyards
Played On 05/26/2018Great views, fun course
Played this course a few years back and was on vacation from the east coast and decided to go back. I really find this to be a fun and challenging layout and especially love some of the holes on the back nine. Found a Hot Deal on Saturday afternoon and combined with the Memorial Day 25% off so I played for $60, which was a great value for this course. Tees, fairways, and greens were all in great shape as I remembered.
I showed up about an hour early as a single and they told me I could go out earlier. The course was pretty empty, especially for Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. Went out as a single and played two balls on each hole. Didn't catch anyone for 15 holes and then had to wait behind a few foursomes but still finished in just over 3 hours.
I would definitely recommend this course and hope to play it again in the future.
TPC Harding Park - Harding Course
Played On 05/28/2017Good course but not a TPC experience
This was my first time playing Harding Park after several trips to the Bay Area. The course is a great public course for residents but not worth the out-of-town rate if you don't get a Hot Deal on GolfNow. Always fun to play a course that will be hosting a major but the layout itself isn't worth more than $75 or so. This is not the usual "TPC experience," but instead gives off the feel of a well run muni.
The staff was great. However, they did warn me when checking in that there had been numerous car break ins in their parking lot so that was a bit concerning. The range (mats only) was decent with a nice short game area. However the balls were pretty beat up. It was cart path only so I walked the course even though the cart fee was included.
As for the layout itself, the front nine feels pretty crowded with a lot of up and back and crossing over holes. The 9 hole course also is adjacent to the front nine making it feel even more crowded. For the most part the holes on the front side are not memorable.
The back nine is a much better experience with the holes being more spaced out with holes running along Lake Merced (nice view of Olympic Club).
I played on Sunday afternoon of Memorial Day weekend and the round only took four and a half hours so it wasn't too bad for a public course. Overall, I had a good time but there are better courses for the value within an hour or so.
If you are looking to spend big to play a round on your vacation, this would not be the course I would recommend. But if you get the resident rate or a decent price on GolfNow I would recommend it.
Pasatiempo Golf Club
Played On 05/26/2017Great Course!
Great course across the board. Course was in great shape, staff was great. Very tough greens but fun to play at the same time. The price is a bit steep even with the Hot Deal but definitely worth playing at least once.
The Course at Wente Vineyards
Played On 05/29/2016Great course and layout
Really enjoyed the layout and the course was in pretty good shape. The course is designed around the surrounding mountains and provide some great views and elevation changes. I used a Hot Deal and it was well worth the price. The normal rates are a bit steep but I don't think you'll be disappointed. The course is fairly open off the tee but there are definitely some challenging holes and tee shots, especially with the wind blowing. If you hit it off the rough about 10 yards or so most holes have either vineyards or tall grass that the staff warns you not to enter because of rattlesnakes.
Lakes/Fairways at Centennial Golf Club
Played On 08/24/2015Aerated Greens
Greens had recently been aerated and were slow and bumpy. Looking forward to playing again when the greens are in better shape. Layout has a lot of elevation change and some challenging holes.
New York Country Club
Played On 07/13/2015Good course, could be in better shape
Played this course for the first time. It was a fun layout - a lot of elevation on holes 1,9, 10, and 18 make for some interesting shots. I played as a single and the course was not that crowded so I played through two groups and got around in under 3 hours. The greens were a bit disappointing as they were on the slow side and had a lot of ball marks, not quite "country club" standards. I wouldn't pay full price to play here but if you can get a good deal during the week or in the afternoon it is worth it.
Ron Jaworski's RiverWinds Golf & Tennis Club
Played On 07/06/2015Worth a Try
Played this course for the first time. For the HotDeals price on golf now it was good value.
This is a pretty challenging links style layout. The course offers a good mix of birdie chances with difficult holes where par is a good score. As mentioned in many of the reviews, the rough off the fairway was very high for public play which added to the difficulty. It definately adds to the slow pace of play (we finished in about 5 hours) because it was not easy to locate balls in the rough, especially on tee shots where you could not see the landing area.
The fairways were in good shape but the greens were a bit chewed up, especially since we played in the afternoon. LOTS of unfixed ballmarks on every green. Unfortunate that people don't have enough respect for the course to take a few seconds to repair their pitchmarks.
Overall it was a fun course and one that I would play again.
Stevinson Ranch
Played On 06/07/2015Play it Before it Closes!
The course is challenging yet fair. The greens were at a decent speed but most had some burned out areas around the edges. Most of the hazards were dry due to the drought. The pace of play was decent and we finished in about 4 hours 30 minutes, although our group waited on almost every shot. It's a shame that this course will be closing next month. It is definitely worth the drive to play if you haven't had a chance yet.
Chardonnay Golf Club
Played On 06/03/2015Beautiful Course
Played this course for the first time while on vacation. The scenary and the views are beautiful. I booked as a single and was scheduled to be paired up with a twosome. When I arrived, the staff told me I could go ahead as a single if I was ready. There was a mini shotgun outing that went off the back nine so the course was pretty empty and I played in about 3 hours, taking my time and hitting a few shots on each hole. The greens had been aerated but the aeration holes were very small and didn't have too much of an effect on putting. The sand traps were a little firm and wet, but playable. The course is pretty wide open off the tee on the par 4's and 5's. Almost of of the par 3's are hit from elevated tee and a few are very tight off the tee and depending on the pin position, you sometimes are forced to hit over trees to attack the pin, a little quirky, but all beautiful holes. Playing from the back tees, I wish that the signature 8th hole was played from an elevated tee like many of the other tees are- it gives the golfer a greater appreciated for the uniqueness of the hole (the photo taken was from the white tees) The majority of the greens are very deep and narrow, so make sure you know what pin number location you are playing to. Overall, it's an interesting course layout with 6 Par 3s, 4s, and 5s and one that I would play again in the future.
Thank you so much for your amazing feedback, it is greatly appreciated. We hope to see you on your next vacation. Thanks again for your feedback.
