The Bluffs Golf Course
Played On 07/31/2015Small town, but great golf experience
The Bluffs is a very exciting golf course, that hosts the University of South Dakota golf team. The course has some holes where you can really score from, but if you aren't hitting fairways you can get into a lot of trouble. The staff is very personable, always making sure to get you a tee time if you're willing to make the trip. The course is kept up well, despite having problems with heavy rain in recent years. The greens are very receiving, and fairways definitely reward the accurate driver. The 13th hole is one of the most unique I have ever golfed. Beautiful view of the Missouri River basin on the Back 9 as well.
The Preserve on Rathbun Lake

I golfed this course early in the morning, and they had recently had a lot of rain. Part of the course was under water, but the staff had already designated travel routes so that you still have 18 holes of quality golf. The course is absolutely beautiful for Southern Iowa. The staff was very friendly and the guys on the mower were very happy to be working there. That says a lot about a golf course. The views from the tee on almost every hole are spectacular. Greens role true, and GPS in cart gives exact distance to green and hazards. It was definitely worth the 250 mile drive for me.
Veenker Memorial Golf Course
Played On 07/29/2015Very challenging for Initial round
This golf course was very challenging. A lot of holes you have to hit a ball 215 off the tee instead of a driver 250. That doesn't play to my game well so I don't like that. Also, the yardages on the course are very hard to read unless you have a mapping book of the course. For the first time golfer of the course, I had 4-5 holes where I hit the wrong club based off of the tee box distance. My buddy was golfing with me and he had a very hard time keeping the ball out of the hazards. If you cannot hit a straight ball off the tee this course will challenge you severely. The clubhouse people were not the friendliest as well (young and kind of bored with their job). However, course was beautiful and well kept. The greens rolled true, and the fairways allow you to control spin of ball very well. I can see why Iowa State would use course, but not for beginners at all.

This is a very exciting course. Sets up well for beginners, yet if played from the long tees will possess a challenge to advanced golfers. The course has some of the most beautiful greens that I have played, and the 13th hole is very unique with over a 100 foot drop on the challenging par-4!
The pro shop is also above average as well!

This course is in very good shape when compared to previous years. It is my home course, and in talking to some locals we think that this is the best condition that the course has ever been in. The grounds crew is passionate about what they are doing, and the clubhouse staff is very friendly.
The course is a par of 35 for men, 36 for women. It is challenging to score on holes 4, 5, 7, and 8. The other holes set up nicely if you can make a good approach shot. The course has a wide creek that runs through it that comes into play on every hole except for a few. This is a very nice 9 hole course to golf.
