Great layout but in need of some TLC

I will start with the good things which would primarily be the course layout. The course is pretty short (6,384 from the tips) but it is quite tight so it requires some good shot making. I personally thought the layout was great but that is to be expected of a Robert Trent Jones Sr and Lindsay Ervin design. The back nine is most definitely better than the front nine design wise in my opinion, front nines variety is a little lacking where as the back nine each hole was unique in one way or another. Another good thing about this golf course was the price, I payed $10 for a hot deal which I would say is worth it if you are concerned about price. If you are paying the normal price the course charges I would go somewhere else since it is not worth it considering you can play 2 better courses for about the same price that are quite close, I wont name them per the review guidelines but they shouldn't be hard to figure out. So now I will talk about the course conditions and they are so mixed depending on where you are on the course. First off the bunkers are not raked on any part of the course so that doesn't change condition wise on each nine. The greens were also pretty good on both nines. On the front nine until you get to around 8 the course is awful, weeds everywhere including in the fairway and tee boxes. Some of it is literally just mowed crab grass to the best of my knowledge. The worst portion of the golf course are holes 3-6 with holes 4 and 5 being absolutely awful. There really wasn't much true rough on the beginning of the front nine, just mowed weeds I think. I was honestly thinking of just leaving after those couple of holes because I figured it was only $10. Then I got to 8 fairway and things changed, there was actual grass for rough and actual grass in the tee boxes, not weeds fully but they were still there just not as much. From then on the course wasn't bad, it still wasn't good but it was most certainly better than the first 7 holes. There were still a few spots that weren't good (hole 11 for instance by the green) Another minor thing about the whole course was the natural areas and the trees were over grown quite a bit, I did see a grounds crew employee out there working on it so maybe it is in the plans to improve but that is something that would greatly improve the look of the course. And if that isn't in the plans just at least trim the plants near the cart path so they aren't overhanging. Pace of play was fine, I was a single and finished in around 2.5 hours. Would I go back to the course, probably not. Would I recommend it, only if you are on a budget and get a hot deal or are local and don't want to drive.

Great Layout, Conditions Lacking Off Fairway

I have wanted to play this course ever since I moved to the area in May because of the layout for obvious reasons. Each hole is modeled after a famous hole on another course that is very well known, for example holes 6-8 are amen corner from Augusta National and hole 13 is hole 17 at TPC Sawgrass. This made the time very enjoyable since the course varies so much. Pretty much no hole was like any other holes on the course, except for amen corner of course. This course is in great shape if you keep it on the fairway and greens but no average golfer is going to do that. The rough needed quite a bit of help, it was bare at times or even just dirt (such as the right rough on hole 9). Bunkers were ok, the last 3 holes had the best bunkers and I am told they have new sand which is why. The only bunker I had a real issue with was the sand in the church pews bunker consisted of about 80% sand and 20% rock, which you really don't want to be hitting your club out of. The greens were good, the most I had at fault with the greens was that there were a lot of ball marks from shots. The fairways were fairly good, sometimes there would be quite a bit of divots but nothing awful or unreasonable. I payed $33 for a hot deal which I would say was totally worth it however, They ask $80 in season I believe which is way to much for what you are getting in my opinion. If you can get a dead for $50 or less I would say jump all over it but if it is more than that I would say go and play somewhere where the conditions are a bit nicer.

The Worst Golf Course I've Ever Played

I don't know where to begin with this golf course, there was so much wrong with the course. I guess I will start with the tees which really weren't there. The tees were pretty much the same length as the rough but more bare. The fairway was non-existent, the course was completely rough. I didn't think there would even be a course that wouldn't cut the fairway have it the same length as the rough. I still can't get over this. Also the fairway was quite bare. There was really no fringe or anything around the green, it was just rough then green. The greens were quite bad but they were sadly the best part of the course. There were ball marks galore on the green and the aeration job was awful. The greens also had cracks and dry/dead spots on about 1/3 of the greens. Also when they cut the green they managed to leave behind the remnants of it such as grass clippings from the mower. Lastly on the course conditions in the bunkers. The bunkers were as I expected, not raked. however at least they weren't packed down and rock hard so if you wanted you could rake it and place to get a reasonable lie. Now the layout, the layout in my opinion was awful. If you are going to be making an executive style course such as this you really shouldn't be having many forced carries. basically through hole 11 most hole required some sort of carry or trouble that is fairly easy to get into. The reason for this is because this course is and executive course and it targeted for beginners who more than likely don't have the swing to consistently get it over trouble. So by forcing people to carry trouble it makes it a lot less enjoyable to play since you will be loosing so many balls. design wise I would say the first 12 holes were not very good and the last 6 were pretty decent design wise. So overall this is the worst course I have ever played and I have played some awful courses. I would not recommend this course even for the $10 hot deal I have seen on golfnow. I will never go back and I recommend you never go at all.

Great Layout But Conditions Were Lacking

Timbers at Troy has many things going for it but it also has some things not going for it. I will start off with the good. The layout I thought was great, wasn't too difficult but wasn't easy. Some short holes but they were very well protected by bunkers and ob. The fairways were decent, way better than prior reviews have stated. The tees were fine, nothing spectacular, they felt a bit "spongy" to me but it rained the previous day so that was probably why. They did seem to be cut a bit too high in my opinion. The greens I thought were decent for a public course. Now for the bad, as you probably guessed from the prior reviews the bunkers were lacking in spots. I wasn't in very many luckily but from what I could see they weren't good at all. They were very, very natural looking with stones and rocks everywhere. One of the bunkers I ended up in had algae growing in it from the standing water that was there so drainage in the bunkers wasn't very good. There was one bunker on one of the holes (I think it was 11's right green side bunker) that had the sand replaced with white sand which really created better contrast and visual appeal than the brown-red and that are in the other bunkers. Lastly the course is way too expensive for what you get. I got a hot deal on golf now for $26 dollars I think so it was worth it for me. But if you don't go through golfnow they are asking for around $60 on weekends which this course is for sure not worth it. If you're going to spend $60 on a round of golf there are a lot nicer courses in the area in which you can play. If they could fix the bunkers this course would be worth the price but as it stands today, no way.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry you were not entirely pleased with the conditions and pricing. Prior to the execution of our next long-term management lease we are expecting extensive work to the bunkers, cart paths, and irrigation systems but a start date is yet to be determined. We are also killing off invasive grasses so that even better turf may grow in. This may at times require watering to soak in the sprayed solution, or produce what look like dead spots though they are temporary. Hot temperatures may require mid-day watering, but the course drains well enough that we are usually 90 degrees off the cart path.

Our prices have stayed the same for several years despite rising costs. We offer military and senior discounts on weekday mornings, in-season. The best value is our Players Club which affords you Twilight rates all day M-Th and after 12pm on Weekends and holidays, in-season. Members also get a free round of golf which can pay for the cost of the membership by itself. Rates and further membership information can be found at timbersgolf.com . We hope to see you again soon.

Great Layout and Great Conditions

The golf course was in great shape. The layout it one of my favorite layouts I have played, had just the right amount of challenge to it. Love how the course integrated stone walls from before the golf course was there. The course was the best conditioned course I have played around this time of year. The only thing I did not like about the course was the cart path, it needs some serious help in spots, they were so bumpy.
