Arboretum Golf Club
Played On 07/23/2020Lost potential
There is nothing special about this place. What initially appears to have nice presentation levels off to nothing more than mediocrity. The course was green as fairways were reasonably well kept, however the rough was generally too rough. This is not a course that would ever host a US Open, so why would you subject your customers to ultra thick and long grass in the rough? Also, there are far too many rocks in the bunkers. All that does is damage clubs and create a dangerous situation by introducing additional projectiles. As for the putting surface, they were mostly kept up but I cannot understand why there was no first cut around them. The line of demarcation was far too severe. You were either on the green or hoping to dig out of the grassy jungle that surrounded the green. Clearly this was not a place that satisfies a true golfer’s needs. You would be best served to pass on this course. Too bad. It certainly has the chance to be good.
Golf Club of Illinois
Played On 07/02/2015What happened GCI?
For years I kept Golf Club of Illinois high on my list of go to courses. It is usually kept in fine shape with nice amenities and staff. I was rather stunned to experience the substantial drop off in all of the above when I went on 7/2/15. First off, for a course which sits at a higher elevation than surrounding areas, the drainage I have known seemed non-existent. I realize we have had more than our fair amount of rain recently, however having gone more than 72 hrs without a drop should have yielded a fairer field of play. Green conditions were the worst I have ever seen here. Very spotty and beat up. You could not get a decent roll on your ball and speeds were inconsistent. The on course restroom facilities had no electric power or windows, so if you chose to use it, you would have to leave the bathroom door open for any semblance of light. This is unacceptable. Furthering that subject, when I visited the restroom at the turn, those rooms were closed and the attendant at the restaurant/bar seemed put out when I asked for the closest bathroom. What went wrong GCI? I can't seem to figure out why such a swift decline with no warning. One last this to point out is that the signage around holes 13 thru 16, while understood by regulars of the course, needs a major upgrade. I had two different groups around me make mistakes regarding holes 14 and 16. Please get with it GCI or you will continue to see a drop off in revenue which may likely lead to a better use of that land. Too bad. You used to be good.
Aldeen Golf Club
Played On 06/25/2014Worth the trip
The course looks very inviting from the start. Very picturesque. As you proceed you'll find that there are more challenges than first appear, so you will need more game here versus other area courses. Water hazards are present throughout so play smart. Overall conditions are very good despite the deluge of rain we have had over the last 10 days. Keep it in the short grass and you'll be a much happier player. Greens are well maintained with multiple levels. They look rather benign but don't get cocky. There are many subtle contours making 3-putts common. Fairways get narrow at times so plan accordingly and approach shots always have traps in play. Traps use "real" sand and are very fair. There are 6 sets of tees so be sure to use the correct ones. Pace was rather slow so don't have immediate plans afterwards or you won't enjoy the experience. It is a nice track with good value and definitely worth the trip from Chicago.
Chalet Hills Golf Club
Played On 7/1/2013A superb track. A must visit.
This course far surpassed my expectations. It is very well maintained and has plenty of course character that would satisfy most everyone. I loved the fast greens that rolled true and accurately knowing that the result is all on you and not spotty greens. Definitely returning to this place. The only shortcoming I encountered was that the ballwashers needed attention. Some were dry or had no towel. Outside of that, it was well worth the drive.
The Legend at Shanty Creek
Played On 8/7/2012Pristine, well managed, attention to detail, great value
One of the best courses out there. It is well worth the trip. A top notch course with top notch attentiveness. Well designed layout, impeccably groomed, challenging but fair, and an incredible value. They treat you like a king. Don't miss your chance to play this gem.
Loon Golf Resort - The Ridge Course
Played On 8/6/2012Seen better days, inexpensive but abused, still has potential with help
Has potential to be a nice place but just a bit too beat up. Tee boxes looked like they were hit by land mines. Too bad, cause it really could be a nice place to play if it were better maintained. Prices are great but value lacks because of condition. Disappointed visit.
Buffalo Grove Golf Course
Played On 8/2/2012slow play, weak conditions, no ranger, poor value
Disappointed with my experience here. Haven't played this course in several years and now I know why. Pace of play was inexplicably slow. Course maintenance left much to be desired. Seems like they don't know about mowers. Cost is average but value is below average. Years ago it was a decent track but I find no reason to return here especially when there are neighboring courses such as The Arboretum which offers a much better experience all around at a similar cost. Additionally the staff at The Arboretum is far more pleasant. Better think twice before you book at Buffalo Grove Golf Club. You too will likely be disappointed.

Always nicely maintained. People are friendly and treat you well. A great place to enjoy and work on your game at the same time. I am always satisfied when I golf here. Never any drama.
