Sugarbush Golf Club
Played On 09/18/2020Out of town round
I was in town for a wedding and was recommended by a few people to come try Sugarbush out. I went off by myself around 845 and pace of play that early was great. Never waited on a shot or had anyone behind me. I live in Florida so I enjoyed the character the course had, different holes and doglegs. I really enjoyed the layout of the course. Overall the course was in good shape. The greens rolled great and with a bit of pace to them. Fairways, bunkers, and rough were all in good shape, only flaw I saw were some of the tee boxes were a little beat up but it looks as if they were aerating some of them to help fix that. Everyone in the pro shop was friendly and the food in the clubhouse was very good after the round. I'll make sure to come back for a round if I'm ever back in the area.
Esplanade at Azario Lakewood Ranch
Played On 08/23/2020Very wet round
This was my 3rd time out to this course and the first time I've run into where it was cart path only. The course was pretty soaked from an overnight rain the night before. It must drain pretty well because the only really unplayable lies were if were within 8-10 feet of a drain. Tee boxes fairways and rough were all still in excellent shape and bunkers still playable even after all the rain. I wrote about them in my last review but the greens here are not your normal Florida greens. Different tiers and pretty undulating and they've gotten slightly faster every time we've played. Word is come October they'll be able to mow them pretty tight and have them running fast. They've gotten noticeably harder every time we've played and with the wind howling this round it was a little hard to hold some of the greens. I enjoy the challenge, just hope they get some consistency in that aspect so you know what to play for. The staff was friendly as usual, my only knock with this course is how pricey food and beverage is. With the Ice/water machines barely working (not to mention the bugs that come out of the machines in the water sometimes) it seems a little off how much they're charging for drinks and snacks from the cart girl. Still a great track, awesome layout and excellent conditions.

Played On 07/17/2020Awesome layout and an excellent value
I think we paid $50 for an early morning Friday tee time which was great value for this course. We got a little nervous as we came to the first putting green we saw because they were slow and bumpy, but luckily the greens were nothing close to that. The clubhouse is nothing special but everyone there was very welcoming and accommodating. The bacon egg and cheese breakfast sammy was great, highly recommend getting one (or two). Overall the course was in great shape. The greens rolled great, not overly fast but still challenging if you left yourself above the hole. Tee boxes and fairways were in good shape and the bunkers were all well kept. The layout of this course is fun, no two holes feel the same and it requires some strategy off the tee.

We got to the course nice and early to catch the sunrise over the 18th green, Everyone from the bag drop to the pro shop to the indoor restaurant/ bar was very welcoming and helpful. The clubhouse itself is beautiful and really brings together the facilities. Conditions of the course were excellent, up to par with what you're paying for. The layout of the course isn't anything overly challenging you just better have a good around the green game or it will be a long day. They all slope pretty dramatically and have little knolls everywhere. If you aren't close to the pin and have a downhill chip/ putt good luck. That seemed to be the main architectural feature of the course was the challenging green complexes. Just go into the round knowing you're not going to out play them. If it's your first time out here I would recommend getting a caddie. Course knowledge here will definitely help you with some aiming points and where to try and not miss around the greens.
Overall a beautiful place, nothing really like it anywhere in Florida. Can't wait to play Blue and Red when they open back up.

Played On 07/05/2020New course already a top notch play
First time out at this new course and we really enjoyed it. As the other reviews state the layout of this course is excellent. A little more on the challenging side with a lot of water lining the fairways. Fairway bunkers are out there but with the gps in the carts you're able see the yardage and use them as an aiming point to steer away from the water obstacles. Tee boxes, fairways and bunkers were all in excellent shape. We even had a decent amount of rain the night before and morning of and the bunkers were still in great shape. The greens here were unlike many Florida courses and had a lot of character. They were slow but I'm assuming it's because they want them to grow in well. When they do speed them up down the road it's going to make this course play much harder.

Played On 06/22/2020Excellent pace of play, good conditions
First time out here from St Petersburg area. We showed up and were warmly welcomed by the people in the pro shop. The range was in pretty good condition and you get a good amount of balls for the price. Above average chipping and putting greens. The starter was also very welcoming and got us on our way. We maybe waited 3 mins total all day on to hit. Pace of play was great and our 2 some finished in roughly 3 hours 20 minutes. Course was in very good condition from tee to green. We were really impressed with the layout of the course. A lot of unique holes that differ from most of the courses you see in Florida. Nothing overly difficult but there’s a few forced carries, and holes with water along the length of the hole. Some of the pin positions they selected for the day (especially 18) were a little extreme but that’s only little flaw I saw. Wish I lived a little closer because it’s a good course and good value.
Thank you so much for your review, Cullen! We are so glad to hear you enjoy our course and wonderful staff. We look forward to having you back in the future.
Brickshire Golf Club
Played On 12/28/2019Standout greens
This was the first time in a few years getting to play Brickshire and it seems as if the course is going in the right direction. Off the tee this course seemed a bit more difficult than I remember. Sloping fairways require accuracy or you’ll find yourself playing long second shots into the green. Tee boxes and fairways were in good shape for late December. The bunkers were the only sub par part of the course but that was only because some of them were muddy/ had standing water in them. The greens were excellent, the best I’ve ever seen them at brickshire. It really brought out a whole new element to the course and made the greens seem much tougher than I remember in the past. All in all the pace was great, the course was above average and the greens were excellent. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Well worth what we paid for a weekend morning tee time!
Thank you so much for your review, Cullen! We are so glad to hear you enjoy our course and wonderful staff. We look forward to having you back in the future.
Royal New Kent Golf Club
Played On 12/26/2019Best of the old ways
I was back in town for the holidays and after seeing the reviews for my old favorite course I had to go give it a try. We had a group of 8 and were the first ones off for the day. We were warmly welcomed when we checked in and were told a bit about the renovations. The course was in superb shape for the time of year. I had heard how great the greens were and they were just as good as everyone had described. I played this course so many times growing up but the shape it’s in now makes it play completely different, a true links course with plenty of rollout and required strategy from tee to green. The course itself isn’t overly difficult with its wide fairways and large greens, just play it smart and cut your losses if you find yourself in trouble. I really enjoyed getting to play this course again and can’t wait to give it another go next time I’m in town.
Hi cullenpittman4. Thank you so much for the great review. We are glad you had an incredible time, and we hope to see you again soon! Thanks for choosing Royal New Kent Golf Club.
Country Club of Hilton Head
Played On 08/31/2019Top notch
One of the top courses I’ve ever played around Hilton Head. It poured down rain right as we went to tee off and then rained off and on throughout the round but the course drained extremely well. Tee boxes, fairways, and the rough were all in excellent shape. Bunkers weren’t bad either for how much rain we had gotten while we were there. The greens were something else. Lightning fast and they rolled so smooth. Maybe the best greens I’ve ever played on. The layout of the course is unique in a good way. A lot of dog legs and the landing areas and greens were fairly well protected by bunkers. Challenging but fair layout and no two holes were really the same. There’s some good views on the back 9. The staff inside and outside were excellent. I’ve been coming to Hilton Head for vacation 15+ years now, playing golf a few times every trip and this is one course we’ll try to play almost every trip now.
The Eagles Golf Club - Lakes
Played On 06/17/2018Slow play, long grass
The course was in OK shape. We were told the greens had been punched almost 2 weeks ago, but there was hardly any signs of that so that was nice. The collar or fringe was very hairy. Really couldnt even put from it even if you were a foot from the green. The tee boxes were long as well and some of the fairways were a bit grown out. The conditions just didn't seem to fit the value of the course.
Pace of play was the real issue here. It was fathers day so I understood the course might be crowded but once we caught up to people on the 3rd hole it got a bit out of hand. Waited and waited on every shot, finally called the pro shop on about 6 to ask if they could send a marshall out which they did. It didn't help much. When we made the turn we figured out the hold up was two groups ahead of us. It appeared to be a family of 5 who clearly weren't regular golfers. We had to call again at about hole 13 to get a marshall out there to speed that 5 some up. Luckily it seemed to work as the pace of play picked up a decent amount after that.
Cullen:
Thank you for being a continued patron of Azario. In the little over 3 months we have been open, the course has been designated cart path only 4 times. That speaks volumes to our staff and drainage capabilities. Unfortunately, 5 inches of rain over 2 days will negate all the hard work and proper drainage. Although the water component of our ice/water machines work just fine, we have found it a challenge to maintain a proper level of ice for our guest. Recognizing that will be a challenge, we have a placed an order for 4 new machines that will correct the ice production challenge we are facing. Our vendor has indicated that we should receive delivery of the new machines by middle of September at the latest.
Thank you again for the kind words regarding our professional staff as they work hard daily to offer an amazing experience.
