Kapalua Resort - The Plantation Course
Played On 02/24/2018Spectacular and tough
I'd seen the pros play this course on TV but seeing it in person was an eye opener. How can those pros walk this course 4 straight days? Talk about elevation change!! For us it seemed like every downhill hole was also down wind, whereas all the uphill shots were into the wind. And wind there was. This course is known for wind and it delivered!! I have to admit though it's pretty awesome to blast one way down the fairway on 17 and 18 - almost felt like Dustin Johnson. Not so much on others, like number 10 which was uphill and into the wind (lol).
There are several holes where lack of knowledge is a problem. Two holes feature blind tee shots and with an aiming post, and a few have gulleys running through the fairways that can really hurt you if you are on the down slope or roll into the deeper rough. The first hole is not a driver hole although it looks like one. The starter will clue you in on what to hit but on other holes be sure to check the gps system to see what lies ahead.
We played 6 courses in Hawaii and these greens were by far the fastest especially downhill. Uphill putts tend to come up short, and lord help you on cross hill putts which can break feet.
The views from most of the holes are simply spectacular. Don't let the extreme challenge of every hole distract you from enjoying the fact you are on one of the most beautiful golf courses around.
It's expensive but should be on your bucket list - you'll not regret the experience.
Mauna Kea Golf Course
Played On 02/19/2018Beautiful course
I simply loved playing Mauna Kea. The course was in perfect condition. The views from most holes was somewhere between good and spectacular. Mauna Kea is bets for golfers who want to enjoy the scenery while also playing a challenging course. Of course you could just focus on your golf but wow what you'd be missing! I'd play this course again and again.
Waikoloa Beach Resort - Beach Course
Played On 02/18/2018Good value, but a stretch to say a beach course.
I enjoyed my round at Waikoloa Beach and would play again but not before Mauna Kea and Mauna Lani South. Both are in top condition and offer spectacular scenery. This course was in good shape and the greens ran true but a tad slow. We got around in just under 4 hours so pace of play was excellent. The only hole on the ocean, number 7, is a great par 5 and for us a good place to see some whales too! Otherwise, none of the holes are on the beach.
Checking in was a hassle as the first person to help me was no help and tried to charge me and my group to play there saying "this is just a confirmation not a voucher". I insisted she get some more knowledgeable help and the next person figured it out quickly and we were on our way. I played 6 courses in Hawaii on this trip and these guys were the only ones to give us some hassle.
Mauna Lani Resort - South Course
Played On 02/17/2018Golf and whale watch!
This course is so enjoyable and provides spectacular scenery. There are several holes adjacent to the ocean and of course their signature 15th hole has an ocean carry. The course was in perfect condition. Most of the holes provide plenty of bail out opportunities and thus is not as tough as others and perfect for me. Next time I'm on the Big Island I will definitely play this course.
We are glad that you enjoyed the South Course, and enjoyed the 15th Hole! We look forward to seeing you again.
