Top Notch From Bag Drop to Trunkslam

Greeted promptly when arriving to the bag drop in my domestic vehicle. Check-in was easy and just outside my clubs were found loaded on a GPS equipped cart. The only drawback to the facility is the lack of an actual driving range. After a few perfectly shaped shots into a net and a few rolls on a practice green that matched course conditions it off to the first tee right on time.

Course conditions were excellent. The tees and fairways were well overseeded and the greens while having some patches still rolled incredibly true. Both fairway and greenside bunkers were maintained and had plenty of sand. The layout is challenging and a great place to do work.

Pace of play was right at 4h17m. We never waited nor were waited on. The beverage cart made multiple laps. Everyone I encountered on the staff was pleasant and cordial. RB is worthy of consideration for your Las Vegas golf trip.

No Frills Golf

Show up, load up and go. After a quick bucket on from the grass tee on the range and a putt or two on the practice green that mirrored that of what we'd find on the course we were off the first tee on time. The parkland style layout is what you see what you get, for the most part. There' s no shortage of slope and undulation on the greens which held well and rolled quick & true. The tees and fairways look to be just coming out of overseed and the grass is taking hold in the tees & fairways, for the most part.

Overall, there's a tremendous amount of value and there's always the option to forego the car and instead carry or push your weapons of grass destruction. Something that's basically unheard of in the 702 area code! The food from the grill was solid and everyone on the staff I encountered was very friendly and cordial.

No Shortage of Wind

The layout plays fair from the tee and with today’s two club wind finding the fairway was possible and keeping it out of the desert was not impossible. Growing grass is not a problem here. Most lies in the rough sat up making it easy to find your ball and to advance it toward the green. The greens were firm, fast and rolled fairly smooth. Didn’t notice much on shorter putts, but longer putts did bounce some. The bunkers I found were maintained and had plenty of sand.

Pace of play was right at 4h25m. I rarely waited and never saw the group behind me. The beverage cart made plenty of laps and everyone on the staff I encountered was friendly, cordial and appreciative. The practice facilities are top notch and accurately represent on course conditions. Overall a very solid value.

Everything Breaks to the Strat

A weekend forecast for warm temps and barely a breeze made me instantly think of Paiute. I easily booked through their website which also included their upcoming maintenance schedule. A small detail that would be nice to see adopted more widely. The drive was 33 minutes from the south strip which by some local’s standards is a distance that should require an overnight stay. The weather lived up to the hype and was sunny, warm and calm, perfect.

Upon arrival at the bag drop I was attended to right away. In the pro shop, the logoed merchandise selection in both brand and product options is second to none. The check in process was quick and simple and my clubs were waiting for me outside on an EZ-Go cart with GPS, USB ports and a cooler with water & ice.

Near the first tee is the practice facility hosting the all grass range that was loaded with balls in near new condition and targets to launch them at. The short game green was firm & fast and also help expose the valley effect. The putting green is large and the pace mirrored that of the on course condition.

I rolled up to the staging area of the first tee to meet up with the starter. He got me grouped, set up with a wet towel and on my way on time. Today, tees were going into the ground at the yellow markers which play at 6483y. The turf conditions from tee box to green complex was outstanding. I was catching & releasing rye grass lawn trouts all day from the lush fairways and when I strayed into the rough I often had a really good lie to work from. The bunkers were filed with sand and raked. The greens played great! They held on distance shots and grabbed chips and pitches. However, when the ball started rolling it had a hard time stopping. A soft putting stroke is all it took to get the ball moving, so leave the ham fists at home. The layout is solid and provided a decent challenge from the yellow markers while the GPS was handy to have and getting a flat lie is gift so use it well. The setup for the day was done well with both tucked and very gettable pins.

Marshalls made their rounds keeping you informed of the pace of play, which just by knowing they are aware was somewhat comforting. We covered the front in 2h17m and chased it with 2h33m on the back. No course record, but mostly tolerable for a busy Saturday. The addition of targets for wedge distances on the range would round out a solid practice facility. The beverage cart made plenty of passes while the halfway house is right on the way to the 10 tee so it was no problem staying topped off. Every staff member I encountered was welcoming, cordial, helpful, and appreciative.

The overall experience from start to finish was absolutely top notch and consistent from my other plays at Paiute. That being said, makes this a must play when in Southern Nevada.

Hold your putter over the ball and hit it with your shadow

Overcast and barely 50°F. Maybe not a picturesque day for golf, but if I’m not working I’ve got to play. I went old school and broke off a phone call to set up a tee time. Upon arrival I was greeted at the bag drop and loaded up on a very clean EZ-Go cart with GPS, a windshield, a cooler w/ ice, and USB charging port. Check-in was easy and it appears the pro shop is going through a remodel to improve its library feel, but still has a decent selection of logo merchandise.

The grass practice tee is very convenient to the clubhouse and includes a nice short game area. In my cart was a very small bag of 16 newer range balls. I was offered more, but I was ready to get things going. The putting green speed matched that of the course, FAST. The starter tracked me down and ran through his very informative pitch and then escorted me to the first tee right on time.

I chose a mix of black & gold tees to play from totaling 6650y. Conditions were top notch the setup was on point. The tee boxes and fairways were in solid shape and beyond those, the dormant Bermuda rough is still somewhat thick and can create some sticky lies especially greenside. The bunkers had plenty of sand and were maintained. The greens are very new, very fast and very firm, but not like bouncy rather a thud and a lot of roll out. The flags are all the same, so the GPS must be utilized to obtain pin location information. Most have visible undulation and tiers to add to the challenge. The layout plays pretty straightforward, no blind tee shots, but some shorter par 4's require some thought. It also offers many elevations changes with some offering pretty spectacular views.

The course wasn’t busy, but I wasn’t alone either and the pace was fine finishing at 3h38m. I would find the addition of pin sheet and wet towels in the carts very useful and an easy play for a facility of this caliber. The beverage cart made three rounds and everyone on the staff I encountered were extremely friendly and cordial.

The overall experience was excellent and what I have come to expect for a resort and equivalent for the rate I paid this day.

Mind ahead of muscles

The weather was too good this day and begged us to bail on work and kick off the holiday weekend at the GC. Upon arrival I was greeted and loaded up on a EZ-Go cart with GPS. Check-in was easy and the pro shop is loaded with a solid selection of logo merchandise.

The practice area is very convenient to the clubhouse and includes a nice short game area. Today the range was on grass and the range balls were decent. The putting green speed matched that of the course. The starter rounded us up and had us off the first tee right on time.

Conditions were top notch the setup was on point. The overseeded areas have grown in thick and extended a couple yards into the fairway rough. Beyond that, the bermuda rough beginning to go dormant but it is still somewhat thick and can create some sticky lies especially greenside. The bunkers had an adequate amount of sand. The greens were fairly soft and showed a lot of healing ballmarks, but the speed was medium fast and rolled for the most part.

The course was busy and the front nine pace reflected that at 2h20m, but it did pick up on the back finishing at 4h24m. We waited on most shots and were waited on.

We saw the beverage cart twice and everyone on the staff we encountered was friendly and cordial. The overall experience was solid.

Not A Good Walk Spoiled

While it's a bit of drive for me, it's a nice escape. The weather somewhat cooperated with sun and warm temps, but it also brought a steady 15mph N/NW with plenty of gusts which made things laughable at times. Range balls were included as well as cart, but I chose to walk today. The practice area offers a grass tee, plenty of targets and the range balls are decent. The putting green is large and the speed and conditions matched that of the course.

Everyone on the staff I encountered was very friendly and cordial. The starter got me off the first tee right on time and provided the day's pin sheet.

The first three holes are fairly open, and offer a little forgiveness, but after that things start to tighten up and accuracy becomes key. The fairways are tightly mown, bordered by somewhat dense rough and beyond that trees and tall grass come into play quickly, The bunkers had plenty of sand and quite playable. The greens are undulating, receptive, rolled true & smooth, but slower than what I have come to expect. Not such a bad thing as the wind would really come in to play if they were at their usual speed.

Pace of play was solid, finishing up in 3h49m. We had a few brief waits, but never were waited on. The layout is solid and presents a fair challenge, combine it with the consistent excellent conditioning make it an enjoyable play . I look forward to my next visit here.

Who you are tomorrow begins with what you do today.

Three months ago this place was shuttered and it seemed that this Arthur Hills gem was gone from the Las Vegas golf scene. There’s pretty well documented recent history of the Legacy in the local media and fortunately it was reopened in October. I’ve been a fan of the layout of the course and really wanted to see how it played after a three month hiatus.

We were loaded up on EZ-Go carts without GPS. The range tee was on mats this day and ball were included which were in decent condition. The putting green was in excellent condition and the speed mirrored that of the conditions of the course. The starter got us off to the first tee right on schedule.

The recent overseed on the tee boxes & fairways has grown in well. Carts were rough only, which was showing signs of going dormant, but it was still fairly dense from tee to green. Some of the bunkers were a little light on sand. The greens held well, were mostly smooth and rolled true, but the speed was a somewhat slow.

The layout is mostly straightforward yet makes for a challenging experience. Elevation changes for the most part are limited to a few holes, but offer some pretty decent views in places. Despite being lined with homes, the fairways & rough are generous enough to keep your ball in the grass, unless you really go sideways. The greens offer some mild undulation and missing on the wrong side can leave pitching back up from way below the putting surface. One piece of information that was lacking were pin locations, either by flag color or pin sheet.

Past experiences with slow play has limited my desire to play here and unfortunately this day it was a little off point. There was no marshal present on this day and we waited and were waited on, logging our round in 4h31m.

Everyone on the staff we encountered were welcoming, cordial & very friendly. After the round the others in my group ate, but they were limited in their options due to shortages of food & beverage. The staff seems pretty enthusiastic and hopefully management will support them with the products they need to serve their customers. I expected some re-opening challenges for operator so allow them some time to get things figured out, but I'll be back.

The towels in the cart aren't souvenirs!

Everyone on the staff I encountered was friendly and courteous. I exited the proshop to my clubs loaded up on a Club Car cart w/out GPS, but a cooler with ice and bottles of water.

What was once a spectacular range has been reduced to a warm up cage, but it's better than nothing. There is also a short game area and putting green. Both were in good shape and the conditions of those matched the course. It was bit early so my surlyness was showing through, but still the starter handled my group like a pro and got us off on time. We did do some waiting, but overall pace of play was almost on point at 4h20m.

Jack Nicklaus designs fit my eye, so I find the layout to provide a thoughful and challenging round of golf. In addition to a few extra yards the elevation changes allow for some spectacular backdrops of the surrounding mountains and the lake. From the tee through the green the course is completely green. If you're playing the appropriate tees and hitting the driver well you can find the hot slots that will bound your ball down the tightly mown fairway and if you're not there's a decent amount of lateral play and contouring to keep it out of the desert. There are houses bordering the course, but set back enough off to not come into play. The bunkers were maintained and had plenty of good sand. The pin placements were a good mix of challenging and obtainable. I'm super critical of the greens at everywhere I play and the greens at RB were the highight of course with their consistent performance on both long and short shots in. They were true and with just the right speed. Occassionally there was a fresh un-repaired ballmark, but no barespots or invasive grasses.

The beverage cart made frequent enough rounds and plan to make time to eat following your round. The food is top is top notch and is paired with excellent service. Bottomline, the value here is huge and it's definitely on my very short list of must plays when in Las Vegas.

Everyone on the staff we encountered was friendly and courteous. We exited the pro shop, which is loaded with logoed merch, to our clubs loaded up on carts w/ GPS just steps from the range. The grass was green & balls on the range were in good condition along with a chipping green and a putting green with conditions that matched those on the course. This was a front 18 of our day so pace was crucial. The starter was good about getting us off exactly on time and the pace of our round was near perfect with only brief waits on last few holes finishing out in 4h10m.

I'm partial to Nicklaus designs so the layout fit my eye. The rough is dormant, so it doesn't present a ton of difficulty while the rest took well to the overseed. Bunkers were maintained and most had a sufficient amount of sand. The pin placements were challenging, but not too absurd. The overall condition of the greens was good. The roll was OK, but a mix of different grasses and recovering ball marks sometimes got in way. Otherwise they were somewhat firm, of medium speed which worked out pretty fairly considering their undulation and the valley effect.

The beverage cart made at least four passes and the service was excellent which was also the extent of our food & drink at the course. A number of the holes offer solid views of the valley and on others the mountains to the west provide a spectacular background.

Bottomline, BB is a solid play and a good value for both locals and visitors. Definitely not a dealbreaker, but bringing the quality of the greens in line to match that of the high level of service in the operational aspects would produce a top notch experience.

Tale of Two Nines

I spoke with the pro shop the day before playing that I would be coming alone and he assured me they'd take of me and they did. Every staff member I encountered was cordial and helpful. I loaded up in an EZ-Go cart w/out GPS and headed out to the practice area. The grass on the range was nice & green while the balls are limited flight and are a little worn. The short game area is tight but just having one is a big plus. The putting green was in very good shape and mirrored the greens on the course.

The starter was very friendly and got me off without a hitch. Pace of play was not an issue today. The first nine winds through and up and down some narrow fairways shaped by dense trees vegetation on both sides. Playing for "ground slice" is something that needs to be considered with the sloped, dormant fairways offering extra run out but not always in the right direction. Following your tee shot on #11 you drop down into a flat, less wooded tract of land where the paralleling holes become visible and the wind more noticeable. #16-#18 offer a nice finishing stretch with a challenge, yet an opportunity to pick up a shot.

The highlight of this round was definitely the greens. They had excellent speed, tracking as well as a firmness that still held well. All very consistent throughout. The undulations help defend and being on wrong side of some pins could quickly become frustrating. The bunkers had decent amount of sand, but some could use an additional rake.

Top notch experience and value. Definitely a re-play.

A Solid Layout that Needs Greens to Match

I finished making an airport run and was looking for somewhere nearby to play while in SA and Silverhorn GC fit my need. It was my first time to this facility. Upon entrance to the pro shop I was immediately greeted. I then loaded myself up onto a windshielded EZ-Go cart w/out GPS. The grass range was green & in good shape, offering a few targets and the balls were decent shape. The practice green was large and the conditions matched that of the course. There was not a starter, but you are called out when on deck and to the first tee. We went off a little later than our time, but nothing major.

Looking back on it, teeing off on the first hole now feels like you're hitting into the ocean. The tree lined fairways (and mostly free from houses) seem to narrow as the round progresses and just finding the fairway doesn't guarantee a clear approach shot. The fairway turf was good and rough was dormant, but didn't affect play other than adding some extra rollout. The greens were OK. They had green grass with perhaps the overseed coming in thin in places. There were no major undulations, but instead nice subtleties. They were receptive, but rolled fairly slow.

Pace of play was just a few minutes past 4h30m so not really a cause for road rage for a Sunday afternoon. We waited and we were waited on. I didn't eat and otherwise had no other interaction with the staff.

Bottomline, it's a good value course to catch a late morning or early afternoon time. Otherwise I'd sleep in and save a few bucks over the prime times until the condition & play of the greens catch up to the quality of the layout.

Closing out 2016

The weather wasn't exactly what the weatherman had forecasted, but the chilly air backed by a pretty decent breeze was made better by good golf at a maintained facility. We were met at our car by Player Services and got loaded up on an EZ-Go w/out GPS. They looked to be newer carts since the last time with the most noticeable addition of a windshield, which was a huge necessity for today.

I didn't make it to the range on this day, but the putting green condition & speed was solid and totally matched the on course play. The starter was most cordial and got us off right on time.

The tees, fairways and greens were all green grass, while the rough was dormant. The tees & fairways were mown tight. I found the bunkers to have plenty of sand & rakes available, however many opted out of the raking part. The greens are the star of the facility and they were somewhat firm (most likely from the temps) and in excellent condition. They rolled smooth, true & with somewhat fast pace.

Pace of play was on point as we completed our round in 4h18m. We never waited and really only on #18 where it got the best of a couple of guys in our group were we waited on.

Bottomline, w/ the exception of a couple holes you pretty much see what you get. The tee to fairway elevation change offers some views as well as a few more yards to your drive. If you're from the big city the green fee is pretty much in line with what you're paying at comparable metropolitan venues and the experience is probably the same.

Pre-Airport Pick Up Round

Last minute show & go before picking my wife up at the airport in 4h45m. The staff was very accommodating throughout the facility. The shop got me set up & grouped with no problem, the grill made breakfast tacos for me in no time - which I highly recommend and I was off to the grass range. Starter got us off on time and the wind made for a little slower play, but pace was still good as we neither waited or were waited on. The wind was more noticeable on the first nine while the second nine was more protected both naturally and by surrounding buildings. Course conditions were top shelf. Mown areas were tight, rough was dense, but fair and the greens were firm, with decent hold and were quick matching the pace of the practice green. All said and done, I then executed a perfect airport pick up.

Chiseled Out of the Moutainside

The weather this day was too good not be on the golf course. Clear skies, warmer than usual temps and barely a breeze made for perfect conditions. The pro shop staff was friendly & accomodating and if you're looking to add another logoed shirt or hat to your collection their selection is large. Player services had me loaded up on Club Car cart with no GPS or pin locations, however the scorecard provides details on each of the greens.

Headed off to the first tee and the range is right on the way, but first a stop at an insanely huge practice green. The green was in excellent condition and closely mirrored those on the course. Head up the hill to the range & a snackbar. This day we were hitting decent range balls off pretty worn mats.

Just about 8 weeks out of overseed the teeboxes, fairways and greens were the on course conditions were exceptional. Greens were somewhat firm but held, rolled true and the speed was decent. The layout is pretty solid and is fun to play. Three of the par 4's on the back really rely on position and may call for something other than driver from the tee. The back to back par 5's closing it out is a pretty sweet finishing stretch. A lot elevation changes make for dramatic views of the valley and add to the difficulty as well.

Pace of play was not issue and the drink cart always around. Travel time from the strip resorts & airport is pretty reasonable and the experience is better than most. Definitely looking to playing here again.

They're chasing the dollar...We're left chasing daylight

Back 18 of a buddies weekend in SA. A little surprised & confused at first as outside services was pretty occupied handling a scramble that was scheduled to go off before us. While I talked with staff a couple times in the week prior, I learned you need to ask the right questions because some info is not free flowing.

The pro shop is well merchandised and loaded with a huge assortment of quality logoed gear. Pro shop staff was courteous & friendly, assuring us that plans were made accordingly and the tourney would an issue. We had an hour before, so we ate and the food was good. Our server did her best, but clearly had too many tables to tend to & repeatedly apologized when it should have been F&B management falling on that sword or leading them out of the jam.

Loaded up on our carts w/out GPS, but a pin sheet was provided we headed to the "iron only" range. The grass & balls were in good shape. The short game green was solid and as was the putting green. The condition and speed matched that of the course.

So with 5 hours of daylight left the starter got us off the first tee right on time, saying that it’s a 4h15m-4h30m play. The course conditions were top notch. The tee boxes, fairways & fringes were tightly mown. The rough was dense but fair, yet stray too far sideways and you'll be in fescue up to your knees. The bunkers had sand and were groomed. The greens were firm, but held well and the speed and trueness were spot on.

Unfortunately, we waited....and waited...and waited...and the course is wide open enough you can easily see the next open hole and identify the group 5 holes ahead that was the source of the back up. We walked off the 18th green just under 5 hours.

Bottomline, I so want to play there again & again. The rate was more than fair for the level of course & services and every staff member I encountered was helpful & cordial. The area is jammed with retail so my wife could spend approximately 4h15m shopping and then grab something to eat. Anyways, if I'm coaxed into a next time I'll be sure to ask the right questions when booking. I learned from my experience, hopefully you can too.

Muni Golf

Brackenridge gets a ton of run every time "where to golf in SA" gets brought up in a conversation. The golf history that is tied to here is legendary and possibly what draws the attention of most golf fans. It's what brought me here to play. It is a muni, so if service, frills, a range, food, & pristine conditions are what you're about, considered yourself warned.

The starter got us going right on time this morning and the pace of play for the entire round was spot on and we were done in 4 hours. Course design and layout was excellent, as to be expected. Getting into the right position off the tee was key on a number of holes or finding the large trees or long bunkers would force you to tap into your creative hero shot repertoire.

Course conditions were average. Greens were the highlight and a rating saver. They rolled extremely well, with solid speed and the pin placements this day were crafty and did not follow the pin sheet - something that was not mentioned by the starter. Carts have no GPS, but have a laser range finder attached. Tee boxes & fairways were decently mown and the rough somewhat thick, but most lies were flat and fair. Bunkers had sand, but had not been groomed. Overall the conditions did not match the green fee.

Bottomline, I can say I've played it and I played it well this day. It pairs well with my game and is worth consideration, however labeling it a must play when in SA might be a stretch. I usually photo-doc my trips to a new course, however here there just wasn't much to capture that easily highlights the attributes.

Straight Outta Overseed

I found a decently priced green fee that factored the cart path only & the fresh maintenance into it. It had been a while since I last played DP as the local rate wasn’t always that friendly, but it seems things have changed and fallen into line with other local courses of similar quality. The staffing was adequate and everyone I encountered was cordial and the beverage cart made multiple passes through our group during the day.
I was loaded up on a Yamaha cart with a cooler of ice and towels, but no GPS so depending on what you’re trying to accomplish with your round the yardage book may be a worthwhile purchase. I then headed over to the enclosed, double deck range. It’s all mats, which were in good condition as well as the range balls. The large putting greens were in good condition and the speed was close to what was on the course. The starter was on top of it and we teed off right on time and closed it out in four hours.
At 6,222 yards from the tips, the length is paired well with the width. From some black tee boxes your firing through a tunnel of pines which can make the room for error shrink quickly. Add to that, there is no shortage of well-placed fairway bunkers as well as bordering sidehills covered in decently thick Bermuda rough that put a premium on finding the fairway and making club selection key.
The greens are small and full of undulations, so to have a good look at birdie it’s important to put approach shots on the right side of the pin. Otherwise, the ball can drift away from the hole and roll off the green. A hand full of greens are closely guarded by water, again putting a premium on accuracy and club selection.
All things considered the tees, fairways & fringes seem to have taken well to the overseed and in a couple more weeks will be very solid. A handful of greens were still healing up, but most were back to rolling with good speed and true. While rolling up to the tee and grabbing driver 12 to 14 times a round is kind of standard, at DP that may not always be the case.
DP is definitely worth a look if you’re looking to play close to the resort corridor or if you’re local consider adding it to your rotation.

Club Championship Weekend...Club Championship Setup

In my search to find a back 18 for a buddies weekend trip coming up, RCGC was in the area so I easily booked a mid-day time through their website. Outside services got me set up on a Club Cart cart and a gave me a detailed lay of the land. There is no GPS, but pin sheets provided and a rangefinder is more than enough to get you around. If you're looking to add another logoed shirt or hat the pro shop is loaded with gear. The staff was cordial and gave me the same details as outside services. It's a grass range that was in good shape with decent range balls and a good assortment of targets. The practice green is huge and performs consistent with the greens on the course both in putting and chipping.

A quick stop at the snack shack to hit up the ice machine and I'm off to the first tee. For the most part course is straightforward, yet there a couple holes with blind tee shots, but the fairways are generous enough to handle a slightly off line shot. Houses are set back enough that they don't come into play, rather trees line most and create a nice separation and isolated feel when playing. This is the hill country, so of course there's elevation changes to factor in and some good views to boot.

This weekend was the club championship and the course was primped and ready to make it a grindfest. The fairways and areas around the green were tightly mown. While the rough was mown as well it still presented a challenge depending on your lie as it was dense but at least you could find your ball in it. The pin positions were a perfect mix of very tucked and somewhat accessible. The greens were very firm and rolled extremely well with excellent speed. The pace where you can land shots and let the ball feed towards the hole and the firmness where you take a few off the number to protect against that first bounce. A real treat.

Bottomline, for a place that gets so little chatter on internet message boards of where to play in SA , RCGC is right there with the resort courses and must plays. I look forward to getting back.

Chasing the Lion

Perfect day for an after work round. Headed right to the first tee after hitting a few putts. Noticed driving up the greens appeared sandy and the practice green confirmed it. They still rolled decent and the green fee was fair with the condition. In a few days I suspect the greens will be rolling true and fast. The greens offer some extreme and some subtle slope as well as some have areas that if they catch your ball could funnel it back off. Just adds to the challenge of picking a good aiming point and the right club. Otherwise the course conditions were top notch. The tees & fairways were tightly mowed, the rough was dense, but not overgrown and the bunkers were sandy and maintained. The course is pretty much see what you get. There are holes that you need to play the ground slice for position or added distance and getting yourself to aim far enough right to cut the corner on #14 can be a mental challenge.

*Update* I played on 9/18/2016 and the sand top dress had settled. The greens rolled well, but we're still a little more firm. Overall mint conditions.
