About

Well, I have to say, I have improved my game over the last 25 yrs playing this game when I got bit by the golf bug. I make it a point to practice my game as well as serve as a mentor for the FirstTee of Greater Austin. I love the game and all the challenges that it has had to offer. I enjoy playing with kids as they also play golf at age 11 and 12 yrs old and I hope to always be able to continue to play this game for the next 30+ yrs. I enjoy playing golf with anyone that enjoys the game regardless of their handicapp so as long as they enjoy themselves and not act like a 3 yr old if they don't hit the ball well or putt it in. This game takes practice to become good and it takes even more practice and yrs to become great so don't expect miracles overnight at this game. And if your looking for a quiet person to play this game with, don't play golf with me, because I will get very excited when you or I make a great shot. This game has taught me that the love of the game is in the person who enjoys it everytime they play it, regardless of whom you play it with. So if you see me "Hawk" on the golf course, remember to have fun, don't play slow, but enjoy yourself with every shot because there is no place I'd rather be when I am trying to unwind from a long week of dealing with "numnuts". HIDDEN GEM

Every time I go out to Delaware Springs, I am amazed at how awesome the course looks, the greens are in an amazing shape, extremely difficult to read, the food in the snack shack is extremely delicious and the course is totally full from how the parking lot looks.
After playing there for over 15 yrs, it has never let me down on how beautiful it is to be out away from anything resembling a city with tall high rise buildings anywhere. From the distance on the 4th & 5th tee boxes, I can spot the huge American 🇺🇸 Flag and it makes me proud to have served my country and remind me how this beautiful place spell’s serenity for anyone taking on the challenges of this course.
If you’re in a hurry to play and get a round ⛳️ in, don’t come out there. Because it’s still a small town just like I grew up in and the folks are just that. Beautiful small town folks with respect and the love for each other and don’t encourage or welcome any big city craziness.
Just bring your patience, your smile, your hungry stomach, and the love of the game because Delaware Springs is like a box of chocolates. Every time you step out there on the course, it’ll give you a different taste but keep you coming back to one of most beautiful places you’ll ever play golf at. And who knows, you might just get hooked on why we small town folks don’t ever want want to live in the city.

Respectfully,
Hawk

AMAZINGLY PEACEFUL

I have been playing this Course now for about 10 yrs and consider it my home course. From the time you check into the clubhouse, you might have Jay, John, Blake, Bear or Mr. Phipps checking you in. They are all extremely professional, knowledgeable, charismatic, helpful and funny. They make you feel like family right away and the atmosphere feels like your exactly where you want and need to be for at least 4 hrs. After you head out to get in your cart, you feel the aura of just being in such a peaceful place as you head to the range to hit balls, chip on the putting green or just heading to the tee box. Regardless if your playing with friends or being paired up with someone they make you feel like they’ve known you for awhile and you feel the relaxation to just be yourself and not at a place that’s stuffy or not welcome. Not at Delaware Springs. It’s the place you will make life long friends and you’ll want to come back for the play as well as the great lunch specials that are a mouthful and filling. Playing each hole is a challenge but it’s also an experience that you’ll never forget. Sometimes and I mean only sometimes it might be a little slow but you know what I say is don’t go play golf anywhere if your having to be somewhere because this Course is so beautiful and you won’t be there no longer than 4 1/2 hrs and I love the environment as well as the people. The kitchen staff is so kind and I love them all. They all work so hard and are dedicated to each player, member or not.
If I was gonna make a suggestion to this course I would suggest that the Marshall’s be a little more friendly and stop and visit with the players if they can, treat all the players the same because members or not, your in the customer service field and it requires to treat everyone the same. And I speak from experience as both a Marshall & a Starter and I make it a point to go above and beyond by getting out of my cart, thanking every player for coming out regardless if they are a member or not. I like to get to know the repeat players where I volunteer at and it makes for a very fast but fun 5 hrs for me. I approach every group with leaving a great impression because I represent the Pro as well as the golf course and all it’s paid employees. I’d also ask that there be bottles of sand or sand at the range to be able to help the crew fill the divots before I leave the range. It would also be awesome to have benches to sit on at the range because some of old guys like to rest our bones even though we love the game.
But overall this place is a place of beauty, peacefulness and serenity. The sunsets that I’ve taken pictures of I’ve written poems too because they are breathtaking. Mr. Phipps, your people are amazing and it’s a direct representation of how great person you are and the standards you’ve set for those working there. May you and your people be blessed with so many more blessings throughout their time working there. The ground crew does a better job than any other public course I’ve ever played on and I’m sure your very proud of them.

Respectfully,
Hawk

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY TO PLAY GOLF

Hi if your reading this and you didn’t play on the 23rd or 24th of January 2018, you missed two of the most beautiful days to play golf. From thanking Bear to squeezing me in to the Marshal who paired me up with Jay from Bertram and John and Jeff from Chicago who were awesome to play the round with. The course is yes still brown from the winter but the fairways were grassy enough to allow a nice little divot. The sand traps were great with the new white sand but work my hardest to stay out of those things. The day as I said was amazing with a 5-10 mph wind from the south and the temperature at about 65 degrees. Shot 8 under 80 got the round and I’m sure Jay shot close to a 75-78. The guys from Chicago were funny and lots of fun to play with. The grilled cheese sandwich with tomatoes from the snack shop was amazing and it’s always nice to see the beautiful ladies working there. Thank you again after nearly 9 yrs of playing this course that it’s always fantastic to see so many great people from all over and may I get another chance to join new people to play this hidden gem of a Course. I’ve played many courses but I can assure you , that you totally love this course the people, the putting and the driving range. Oh yeah forgot to mention that these greens should be nicknamed “Grease Lightning “ for their speed! They were running about a 10+ no doubt but since I knew the Course conditions this time of the year I knew how to put them close. This course never amazes me of how beautiful the surroundings are and they are always making improvements like on number 4 where they are putting a sprinkler system in so that there will be grass there in the spring. Keep up the great work and thank you to all the staff under Mr Phipps for your hard work and dedication. Respectfully, Robert Rocha, SgtMaj, USMC (Ret)

Some Faiways

Are in miserable shape, but this does not include the people in the club house who check you in. They have no personality and the professionalism is completely out the window. The course could be such a beautiful place to play if the grounds keepers could put some work into the areas around the greens as well as the fairways. There are so many weeds around the greens and some of the fairways look like your out hiking in some dirty state park that has peaks and valleys. The back nine is the worse with exception of 18.

COW PASTURE CONDITIONS

I have played this golf course for awhile now and have to say the fairways have gotten better this year because of the rain that Austin has been blessed with but the greens are in miserable shape and need lots and lots of TLC by someone who knows about golf courses. The fairways are still not up to par because there are like three different kinds of grass growing on the fairways. The sides of the fairways are way to high with Johnson grass and weeds and is an accident waiting to happen, I.e.Snakebites etc. If you hit there, which I don't but it really should not have grass growing 3-4 feet in height. Ever since they have partnered and included foot golf to help raise money to keep the golf course open it has diminished the quality of the course considerably. There are a million mosquitoes this time of the year So highly recommend if you do go play take a can of it in your bag. They have carts for those who need them but if you play and want great exercise then walk this course. This course has the potential to be a hidden gem but it won't ever be with foot golf there. The range is pretty good but the putting green needs to be leveled and made much better. They don't have an area to practice chipping which they should. When it rains be extremely careful walking to the first tee box area on the wet sidewalk because the sidewalk is extremely slippery and it could be a day of golf for you that will never get started because of a back or head injury and I'm not even kidding. Good luck to you if you pick to play there but you've been forewarned.

NEW YEAR'S EVE DAY

I enjoyed the round and remembered how difficult some of the hole could be like number 8 and 9. I love the layout on the front 9. The play was really slow on the back 9 and there was no Marshall to come around to hurry the groups playing slow. My friend Edward had never played before and thought the course was nice. The lady in the club house was a long time employee and remembered me of when i use to work there. She was very professional and treated us with kindness. Also Brian who is also a great long time friend and employee there.
Of course Brent is still there and as the same of when I worked there is still the same self centered jerk who only treats those with money with professionalism and forgets that the hardwork of veterans is the reason he has a job to come to everyday. Aside from him, that is one of the best golf courses t play in the spring and summer but the rates are way to high. Delaware Springs in Burnet is just as beautiful and the staff is amazing to everyone that plays there and the rates are always awesome. A military discount is always given too!
Don't let Avery Ranch fool you when they host a military play day, they only do it for the publicity and the cost is way to high.
Get rid of Brent and bring in someone with a cheerful attitude, great customer service, and professional treatment of every player and that course will prosper even more.

FANTASTIC COURSE

The best thing I like about this course is the pace of play. The staff is outstanding and the cost to play can't be beat anywhere. It's always in fantastic shape and the greens are something to reckon with because they roll really fast. I dream about making a hole in one at the par 3 by the club house one day. My friend Edward finally broke 100 on this course. I continue to shoot in the high 70's and low 80's and the atmosphere is just phenomenal! Thank you to the great staff Mr. Phipps.

AWESOME STAFF, COURSE AND PRICE

Took a friend to play the course a couple of weeks ago and he was shocked at how beautiful the course was and by the 3rd hole, he was wanting to go back the next day to play again. We played on 4th of July and then came back for the 6th and played again. I love this course and wish I didn't live so far away or I would make this my home course. Staff is extremenly professional, courteous and I would highly recommend this course to anyone with whatever handicapp you have. As a 6 handicapp, this course provides any player with challenges and I hope to go and play this course again very soon. The STPGA also held one of their tournaments there and all the kids were challenged with this course. Even though it got rained out and they only got to play 9 holes (thank god for rain for the course), my daughter had a great time playing there. Highly recommended course. Food is kinda pricey, but the folks in there are awesome as well.
