Can’t wait to come back for the full experience

Booked this tee time the day before and a pop-up thunderstorm showed up the next morning. I called the pro shop a few hours before my tee time and asked if I could maybe move up my time at all. The best they could do was 10 minutes, but it was definitely much appreciated. It was $5 for a small bucket of balls at the range, which I thought was reasonable. The starter yells out for the next group five minutes before their tee time to corral everyone on the first tee to keep things moving, which was appreciated.

Got paired with two other people, one of which walked. We got done with the front nine a little under two hours; held up a little by the group in front. As we got done with nine, you could tel the heavens were about to open. I stopped in the pro shop and asked if I could get a rain check. There were no questions asked and I was refunded for the back nine. It started to rain about five minutes later.

I’ve run into a few courses that gave me a hard times about refunding rounds bought on Golf Now when it came to unplayable conditions, so I really appreciate what the club here did for me. Course seemed to be in great shape and the greens rolled well even though there were signs the greens were punched not that long ago. Between their accommodations and the shape of the course, I can’t wait to come back here and play a full 18 when I get a chance.

Course in need of TLC

Luckily I got this round for a hot deal, which made me a little more at ease with the rate, but I would not play full price to play this course anytime soon.

Upon arrival, I was told that the bridge to the No. 16 green was washed out on Tuesday due to flash floods after 7 inches of rain. Totally understandable. Also, No. 12 was converted to a par 3 because of the inclement weather earlier in the week. Stuff happens. But there were some spots on the greens and fairways that were burnt our or in poor condition. Additionally, a lot of the cart paths were in poor shape or nonexistent. This course has so much potential so hopefully the bad weather earlier in the week is a blessing in disguise and the course can get fixed up to what Mike Strantz carved out a few decades ago.

Better than in February

I told myself I wasn't going to play this course after playing here at the end of February when it was overcrowded and sopping wet, but I decided to give it another try because I got a reasonable price on the tee time. The dynamic pricing the course uses is good if you're a single player that can go out in the middle of the afternoon on a Monday, not so great on a weekend when you're trying to book a foursome and you're overpaying.

The course was in much better shape this time. No wet spots (would hope not since it hasn't rained in two days) and the greens were recently punched, but rolled pretty fair for the most part. The inconsiderate players ruin the course by not fixing pitch marks on the greens and not raking bunkers. Several groups let me play through, so I got done with my round in three hours, so I can't complain about pace of play. The last time I played on a weekend was a disaster though.

Definitely don't play here after heavy rain, and pick and choose your times wisely to avoid overpaying and avoiding a logjam.

Great value for some peace and quiet

I got this round of a steal from a hot deal, but I would play this course at full price in a heartbeat. It's a little off the beaten path (I got stuck behind a tractor on the way there) but since it's isolated, it's a peaceful round with only the hums of golf carts to distract you. The greens were in great shape, and you could tell the tee boxes and fairways are trying to come back.

The course itself was a little tricky, but fun. The elevated tee boxes and rolling fairways provide you with opportunities to try to cut corners on some holes, while others force you to play specific shots off the tee. The greens are rather large in area, which may be good or bad, because the greens were extremely quick. I bent down to read my line with some weight on my putter, only to have the bottom of the blade slide out from underneath me; that's how slick they were.

Guys in the pro shop were great. I showed up a little early and since I was a single, they told me to go ahead when I was ready. I started about five minutes early and hit a foursome on the second hole, but they let me play through. Two more groups let me through as well, but there wasn't really anywhere for me to go. Pace of play was still acceptable though (got done in a little over 3 hours).

It might be a bit of a drive from certain parts in the Charlotte area, but it's definitely worth it if you're trying to escape the city life for a few hours.

Not kidding about the best greens around

Played on a late Friday morning and was running a few minutes late because of traffic out of the Charlotte area. The clubhouse attendant and starter were very accommodating to get me out ahead of a foursome and to get me with the person I was supposed to be paired up with. The person I was paired up with was a different story (took multiple phone calls and slowed me down throughout the back nine), but the course was in very good shape for early March.

Tee boxes and fairways were somewhat dead, but that's expected. However, the greens were immaculate and rolled like the middle of summer. Typical Donald Ross course with postage stamp greens with all kinds of weird slopes and shapes. Basically have to play everything to the middle of the green and hope you don't leave it short or long. Challenging course, but having it in the shape it was in makes it worth it.

Don't play here, especially in the winter

I read some recent reviews and seemed like it would be alright to try it out, and boy was I wrong.

I should have known I was in trouble when the starter told me that I was going to start on 10, there were at least three groups in front of me 15 minutes past my tee time. A twosome sped past me and teed off as well, telling the starter that they teed off on 13 (?!) and they only had three holes left. What place allows that? It was cart-path only and I understand that slows things up, but come on.

It's hilarious that this course puts such an emphasis on pace of play. There's placards in the carts, the initial email to confirm your tee time stresses it, and meanwhile, I didn't even get to finish my round. I was supposed to tee off at 1:18, and it was probably more like 1:30-1:45 when I finally teed off. I got done with 16 holes around 5:30 with a sunset around 5:56, but since it was cloudy, it was a lost cause trying to wait behind a foursome to finish two holes in the dark.

Speaking of that foursome, me and the father and son I was paired up with kept pace with them the entire first nine. As we made the turn, they were coming out of the clubhouse and insisted that they tee off in front of us on the next nine. If we weren't held up by them, there's a good chance we would have finished with plenty of daylight left. Additionally, there was a twosome in front of them that wasn't playing any slower than them. Good thing there's an emphasis on pace of play though! Must not be able to afford to pay a ranger to stay past two.

The course conditions were horrendous. I understand it's winter, it hasn't been warm and there's been a lot of rain lately. But these conditions were unacceptable. The father and son said that this was the worst shape they have seen this course in. I can't imagine it being any worse. There were spots where I would have been better off hitting out of a bowl of soup from the clubhouse.

If that wasn't enough, the cost for a bucket of range balls (maybe 30ish in a bucket) was $7, which I felt was a little steep. Additionally, the entire range was sand and I had to hit off of mats that were there. Maybe I should have taken one with me to hit off of during the round.

To say I overpaid for this round at $50 in the winter is an understatement. I can't imagine how steep this place gets in the summer.

Looking forward to the automated message on the reply of this comment saying "we're sorry about your experience; we hope to see you again soon." Save it, because I will never play here again.

Classic Pete Dye course for cheap

No course is going to be perfect at the beginning of December, but overlooking the conditions, Oak Hollow was a joy to play. It's a classic Pete Dye design, a few short holes to warm up, some challenging, yet scorable holes on the front to get your hopes up, just to crush you on the back. It was a little wet and carts were path-only, but I really enjoyed the layout. The holes on the front by the water provide you with a beautiful view and menacing tee shots. The winter rates were extremely reasonable, which also came with a $3 voucher for the grill room. I went out on a cool Friday morning and only had a handful of people in front of me. Got done with the round in 3 hours. Greens were a little slow but in great shape. Really looking forward to checking this course out again when the weather is better.

The King can do no wrong

Being a Western PA native, I felt an obligation to play an Arnold Palmer designed course. This is one of my favorite courses I've played since I've moved to the area, and it's extremely reasonable. I played on Thanksgiving Eve, and the greens looked like it was the middle of June. Sure, the fairways$29, I consider that a steal.

This course is as easy or as difficult as you wan to make it based on the variety of tee boxes. Arnold's Western PA roots are on display with elevation changes on multiple holes and multiple shots. The course is fairly open for the most part and was a joy to play. The pace of play could have been better, but it was a busy day on the course, which is understandable. Can't wait to go back and play it again.

Can't believe I wasted $20 playing here

When I rolled into the parking lot and saw no cars there, I should have known I was in trouble. It was a little cold in the morning, so I gave it the benefit of the doubt. I wanted to come here just to work on my short game and get some work in with my new putter grip. That too, was also a bad mistake.

The staff is super friendly, and the course looks like its in great shape for November -- at first. As you navigate through the second hole, you realize the reviews are true. The cart path is falling apart, and it's not much better trying to drive in the grass. The fourth hole is essentially mud. The greens look like you're taking ground balls on a rocky baseball diamond with all the hops the ball takes. Good luck trying to find your ball on the ninth hole with all the leaves everywhere. There were times I couldn't tell if I was on a golf course or I took an ATV off-roading into the mud.

Hopefully this course is nice in the summer during peak season, but the grass at my apartment complex is better maintained than this golf course. Might have been a crown jewel 30 years ago, but right now it could use a miracle.

A Tale of Two Courses

I really want to like this course, but it's so up-and-down that I can't really tell if I do or not. The bunkers on some hole were like hitting out of damp clay, but others were raked and fluffy. Some tee boxes were manicured well, others were overgrown. Some fairways are tight, and the greens were pretty slick for November golf, although one or two greens were nicked up with golfers not repairing divots, along with some greens patched with large swaths of sod. There were a few times where I had to kick some leaves off the tee box so I had an area to hit off of. A quick use of a leaf blower would've gone a long way. Also, there was ash in a fairway bunker on 18, like someone set up a campfire in it. Was really bizarre.

Should have listened to the reviews

I figured I would give this course a try because I had credit on my GolfNow account that was going to expire. For the cost of the course, it probably isn't worth it.

It was cloudy and overcast and not super warm when I played, but somehow the course was drenched in some areas. A few tee shots that were in the fairway plugged and the it seemed like the ground should be under repair in some areas. Additionally, it was difficult to differentiate in some instances where the fringe and the green were. For a resort, I would have expected GPS systems in the golf carts, but that was not the case. If you can keep the ball straight off the tee, this course is fairly easy. The 18th hole is a picturesque finishing green, but for the cost of a round, you can definitely find much more viable options nearby for cheaper.

Excellent course with great history

I wanted to play Tanglewood because of the history -- the course hosted the 1974 PGA Championship. Lee Trevino won his first PGA Championship, edging Jack by a stroke. Sam Snead tied for third place at the age of 62. So with that known, I was content with that.

But the course was in phenomenal shape at the end of October. According to my playing partner, the greens were "slow" in the morning. They still had some bite to them, however. Very challenging course with plenty of bunkers. Hard to score on the par 5s, and the par 3s can have some length to them. Very enjoyable round. Keep in mind it's a $2 fee to enter the park, so make sure to have some cash on hand and allow yourself a few extra minutes to drive through the service road.

Tough course with recent upgrades

I usually play here once or twice each year (friend of mine is a member) and it's always in great shape. Greens are slick with plenty of break, and a lot of holes are tight, so you have to be precise off the tee. Provides a challenging experience with a lot of elevation changes. In recent years, they've upgraded the clubhouse locker rooms and the restaurant to expand an outdoor seating area on a patio by the practice green. I personally would never pay to be a member at any country club, but I do enjoy playing this course a few times a year when possible.

Great Place to Learn the Game

I’ve been playing Grassy Lane for about a decade now. It started as a good place to hack it around in high school. I played it for the first time in a few years and was pleasantly surprised at how well it has held up, as well as improvement. Tee boxes have been moved slightly and the eighth hole was been redesigned to improve drainage around the green, and looks fantastic to add a new wrinkle in a simple course design.

The course is extremely short (several par 4s that are either under 300 yards or close to it) and is a great place for beginners to learn. I took my sister here (she’s never been on a course) and it was an enjoyable experience. Not a lot of break to the greens, but the course has held up great for how hot and dry it’s been this summer.

Below average for decent price

First time playing this course. Greens were in rough shape in some spots, as were the fairways. There were times I couldn’t differentiate between the fairway and the rough. I understand it’s been dry, but the course clearly isn’t maintained outside of Mother Nature. Very tight in some spots with a lot of doglegs. Carts are average. Restaurant on site looks good and was packed for breakfast. Beer at the turn was a smidge pricy ($28 for 12 Michelob Ultras). Would rather go down the road a few more minutes and play Knoll Run for a few more bucks.

Disappointed in additional fees

I want to preface this with that I've been going to Turkana for years, but I was highly disappointed when I went over the past weekend. My friend and I were charged an additional fee for having separate carts. I understand that we are adding additional work for the course by taking separate carts, but I feel that I should not have to pay an additional fee when I am trying to follow CDC guidelines and practice social distancing and ensuring my personal safety. Additionally, there was a large gathering near the clubhouse when we made the turn to the back nine, which was also unsettling.

Additionally, the cart paths were in horrendous shape. I understand these are one of the last things on the list to maintain for courses, but there were several occasions where it was rough riding going up hills where it seemed unsafe.
