Had potential

Golfing in North Carolina is typically a pretty sweet proposition. Pinehurst area, stunning weather, perfect course conditions, lots of history... Unfortunately, there is a reason why it was hard to find a tee time everywhere except Southern Pines - it's just not that great.

The course had promise - a Donald Ross design, easy parking, friendly staff. We even were able to get onto the course earlier than our tee time which was a nice surprise. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there.

On the very second hole, there was a 3 GROUP pileup waiting to tee off. We waited for almost 15 minutes before finally calling the ranger to drive out and sort it out. The pace of play remained insanely slow for the entire round, which mercifully ended well more than 5 hours later.

The course looked tired. There were weeds around many of the features, the grass was spotty in places, the bunkers had hard, rocky sand and the cart path was bumpy with roots and broken asphalt. Greens were not bad though and the rough was reasonably friendly (for those of us that go in the rough). But overall, the course needs love.

The two of us flew to NC and paid almost $160 for a golf round that lasted 5+ hours with fairly disappointing conditions. The course needs to up its game if it is going to compete in that area. At this point, can't recommend.
