Imaginative layout

I was playing solo the day I played and was one of the first to go out. Sun was just rising and the first couple of holes were facing east, so it was tough see. Also, course was wet due to the previous day's rain, so It was cart paths only. The front nine is pretty basic, except for the river and ponds making club selection and accuracy important or you will lose a few balls, as I did. The greens were newly fertilized and almost an unnatural green compared to the rest of the course. They were very receptive...balls held well, but putting speed was especially slow first thing in the a.m. The view at number nine was especially lovely, with creek around and flowers inviting to the eye. The back nine is much more interesting, and a bit non-traditional in the layout, but I really enjoyed doing the math and figuring out which club I needed to get to the hole without ending up in a ravine or water. There is one par three with a long trek up to the tee and some pretty scary switchback turns on the cart path. The tee here had artificial grass which was kind of tacky, but I imagine the shaded area is hard to maintain, and it would also be hard to get mowing equipment up to the elevated tee. The cart path took me by some lovely settings along the creek, and later opened up into the valley looking up to the homes nestled on the hills above...lovely views. If I had had time, I would have given the back nine a second try. There were a few "buggy" areas, but not too bothersome on this particular day. Give this course a try if you want a nice easy warm-up nine followed by an almost whimsical second nine. Bring your imagination along!

Comfortable course

Nothing fancy about the club house, but the staff was super friendly and we enjoyed the GPS on the carts. The course is nestled in amongst homes and condos, and there is an occasional glimpse of the "aah"" Smokies.. This is a pretty straight forward layout with lots of straight fairways and just a few minor doglegs and a couple of elevated greens. Speaking of the greens....they had recently been thatched and there were quite a few bumps, so putting was frustrating.(somewhat to be expected with golf in the fall). This is a very comfortable course, even for a novice player. The women's tees are very friendly, with a rating of 68. It was nice to play a new course and walk away with a good score....a great confidence boost.

Very playable for all levels

This is a lovely course with lots of stellar views of the river and mountains. The women's tees are comfortable, but a little too kind on those holes teeing off over the water. The greens are firm and fast, but are well protected with thick fringe, so this makes the short game a challenge. We loved this course, and my husband wants to go back and see if he can beat me this time. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Make sure to take drinks with you if the snack bar is closed, as there is no return to the clubhouse at the turn.

Lives up to its name

My husband and I recently went to Gaylord for an extended weekend of golf. While there we played three of the Treetops courses, Black Bear, The Loon and finally on our last day, Marsh Ridge. We have played and enjoyed this course on other trips to the Gaylord area. The main highlight of this course is the par threes and several par fours that require a solid hit to carry the marshlands between the tee and green/fairway. On this visit, we found the tee boxes and greens were a bit ragged in areas, but this did not take away from the overall playability of the course. While this course will not blow you away with breath taking views, it is a comfortable course for the average golfer.

Great course for the average golfer.

My husband and I came up to Garland for a mini golf vacation and decided to add " The Loon" to our list of courses to play.
We arrived just a little before our tee time and were greeted enthusiastically by the friendly counter girl in the pro shop. After spending a few minutes on the range, we headed out to the first tee. We really enjoyed the course for its well kept fairways and greens that were receptive but not too speedy. While this course may not have some of the spectacular views and elevation changes that other courses in the area possess, it is a very comfortable course for the average golfer. The homes and condos along the course are beautiful and it looks like a great place to live or to rent and play/stay.
