The Golf Club at Middle Bay
Played On 05/07/2018Disapointing changes
I was excited to play the course for the first time in about 4 years and boy has it changed. They adjusted the routing so the holes against the bay are mixed among the front and back nines. This certainly makes your round more interesting as you have to go back and forth adjusting for the winds off the water. The course is in decent shape even though greens were recently aerated.
That being said, this place is not worth the money. I was told I could not walk even though it was not crowded on a perfect weather Monday morning. I get that cart fees are part of how they make their money, but flat out not allowing someone to walk is ridiculous. To add insult to injury, the cart GPS was not working. However, the most egregious thing was they had no food options Their cafe was closed (looked permanent based on the stacks of boxes and stuff inside) and there were not any vending machines.
There are PLENTY of other options in the area where you get a much better value. I certainly won’t be back.
Douglaston Golf Club
Played On 05/20/2016NYC cour
I played this course for the first time the other day. I had looked at the scorecard prior to my round and was disappointed to see that it played less than 5700 yards from the tips. However, once I started my round I was very pleasantly surprised with the layout. Despite being short, it offers undulation and doglegs that make it play longer. The course is in great condition and our round was 4.5 hours, which for a NYC muni is incredible.
The biggest detractor is that it's not accessible via mass transit so you'll need a car to get there.
Blue at Bethpage State Park Golf Course
Played On 05/15/2016#3 at Bethpage and that's a compliment
Just because it's 3rd on the rank of Bethpage courses, don't discount Blue. It offers a challenges to both better golfers and intermediate ones with the elevation changes and doglegs. The architecture is very similar to Red so if you're hoping to progress towards that, Blue will help you get there.
I recently played the tips with two friends who are both solid single digit handicaps and I never really felt disadvantaged by the course set up. If you can't get a tee time on Black or Red, Blue is your next best choice.
Berkleigh Golf Club
Played On 03/26/2016Good conditions + grass range + good price = Great value
As a former member of Berkleigh when it was a private club, I was pleasantly surprised with the course conditions. The greens rolled true and the bunkers were in good shape. They've reversed the nines so it was a little strange at first, but having 18 finish at the parking lot makes a lot of sense for a public course. Pace of play was good as we finished in just about 4.5 hours.
The facilities have seen better days. It's obvious they haven't done any work to the cart paths in years and the clubhouse has seen better days. I didn't stick around to check out the grill so can't comment on that.
Green at Bethpage State Park Golf Course
Played On 10/24/2015Solid course
If you can't get on Black or Red this is a good option. Course won't blow you away but it's a fun layout. It's a great course to play matches or games with your buddies.
Championship at Harbor Links Golf Course
Played On 07/12/2015Expect glacial pace of play
Positives:
- course is in very good shape
- challenging course for all levels
Negatives:
- pace of play is incredibly slow & there are no rangers out there to regulate it
- beverage cart only appeared on the back 9 after we called pro shop to complain
- we were told there are coolers of water on the course, there definitely were not
- overpriced based on level of services
Dyker Beach Golf Course
Played On 10/11/2014Another good value at a NYC muni
It was tough to get a true feel for the course as I played in constant rain but from what I saw it looks like this could be a fun course in better conditions. Not overly challenging in any one way and allows you to play a variety of shots into the greens.
The one disappointing thing was when I Initially arrived at 8am the Pro Shop was not open yet and then they said they were closed due to the rain. The other thing that bothered me was they didn't have any coffee available for purchase. It was a cold, wet day and grabbing a coffee at the turn would've been nice.
Pelham Bay at Pelham/Split Rock Golf Course
Played On 10/04/2014Good NYC course for a great value
Pelham Bay is a solid city course that won't blow you away but will provide an enjoyable round for a great value. It's wide open so you can spray your drives yet recover for par or bogey fairly easily.
LedgeRock Golf Club
Played On 08/24/2014Best course in the area by far
Ledgerock is a virtual unknown in the greater Philly area, but is a course that's set up to challenge even the best of golfers. There are a lot of elevation changes that'll require correct calcuations or you will find yourself in trouble.
Even though the greens were just aerated last week, they still rolled pretty true and were very receptive to approach shots. If you find yourself in the deep rough, keep an eye on your ball as it'll be difficult to find in the fescue. Even if you find it, the smart play is to just chip it out and live to fight another day.
Enjoy the great view of 16, 17, 18, and 1 as you sit on the patio enjoying a post round drink or meal.
The Golf Club at Middle Bay
Played On 08/17/2014Good option for those in NYC
This is not a bad course if you're looking to get away from NYC for a round. It's about an hour drive and a pretty good value. The first few holes are the typical neighborhood golf course views, but once you make the turn you're right on the bay and are treated to fantastic scenery along the water for a few holes.
The layout is not overly challenging, but pay attention to the landing areas off the tee as sometimes even a good drive can potentially land in the weeds/water.
Mosholu Golf Course
Played On 05/22/2014Good value and easy access
I've been playing here for over 5 years. This is not a course where you should expect sterling conditions, but for the price it's a good value. Very fun course for beginners or those who don't play too often and a good course for more advanced golfers to fine tune parts of their game. The chipping and putting area is the best in the city and the staff is always friendly. It does get crowded at times because it's the HQ for The First Tee, but we should be happy that younger people are getting involved!
Broadacres Golf Club
Played On 06/09/2013Good value & cool surroundings
This course will not blow you away with ammeneties or pristine condition, but it's a solid 9 hole track in a very unique environment. Driving up to the course it seems like you're in a movie with the ivy covering the boarded-up buildings of the old psychiatric center. The course itself isn't overly challenging, but the up-hill par 3 3rd hole is a fun test for even the better player.
Royce Brook Golf Club - West Golf Course
Played On 04/28/2013Decent value but expect slow play
The course itself was very nice and provided a good challenge. However, don't expect to play quickly. I played in a group of 3 behind a foursome and it was a 5+ hour round where we were waiting for quite a bit on every hole, more so than we should have.
We are sorry to hear that you were less than satisfied with your round here with us. However, we do appreciate you taking the time to offer your feedback as we always look to improve however we can. We are currently in the beginning stages of building a brand new Pro Shop, catering facility, lockers and restaurants on the property, that is why the MB Cafe is currently closed. We hope to have it re-opened some time during the season. With that said, we would love to hear more about your specific experience. If you would like to discuss further please email us at proshop@thegolfclubatmiddlebay.com . We look forward to hearing from you.
