Honest Review

I like to break down parts of the experience.

1. Clubhouse/Staff: Easy check-in. The guy in the pro shop was nice and no issuse checking in. The starter was funny and asked if we had any course questions.

2: Course/Pace of Play: Course was in good shape for where the course is located. It's hot up there, so don't expect plush fairways. The fairways are more than playable, and people who complain about the fairways during the summer months in SD are just fools. The greens need a lot of work. Very patchy, dead grass and patchwork. San traps had dirt, just a little hard-packed, but you can get your club under it. The pace of play was very respectable. Couple hole we waited an extra min, but never really slowed you down. Overall, if you play the correct tee, then you should enjoy the course.

Issues: started at 1 and was told cart girl was working. 18 holes and did not see her once. Did not make us very happy. There were plenty of tee times on the course in front of us and behind. Maybe the course needs to understand people do golf at twilight times too. Water stations are non-existent. Its dam hot out there and no cart girl makes it a long dry day of you have no water. Come on management, you need to put a water cooler every 4 holes in this heat.

Overall: For $40 bucks at twilight its a fun course to play. Has a great challenge from all tee boxes, if you play the correct one. Bring some extra balls, the course gets tight in a couple of places. I would play the course again, as well recommend it.

Still Bad

I am not really sure what the last 4-5 reviewers are talking about with their 4 stars reviews. These people must not play many courses to know what a good course looks like.

First, these clowns who run the course have a scramble in the middle of the day, making this a 6 hour round. Yes, a 6 hr round. Waiting on every tee box, waiting on every 2nd shot. It was just painful.

The course is in much better shape than the past, but still not even close to what a gold course should be. Especially for anything more than $25. The greens are just awful. It's like putting through the dirt. The fairways are ok. They look good from the tee box, but when you get to your ball, you then realize how spotty the fairways really are. There are a couple of holes that are nice, but not enough to say the course is worth playing. Sand traps are the best part of the course, and you should never say that about a golf course.

The only saving grace of the round, since we were mixed in the tourney we got free food and beers throughout the round at each hole. Heck if you're going to waste 6 hours of my day, then I'll take your free beer. If you cannot get this course for more $25 or less, I would take my money somewhere else if i were you. Do not believe these other reviews who apparently don't know what a gold course should look like.

Please keep it up owners

WOW what a surprise Cottonwood has become. This used to be known as one of the worst courses in SD, but after playing it yesterday I am blown away my the green (yes) green fairways. I play golf twice a week, and Ivanhoe easily has some of the greenest in SD at this time. There are even a couple of holes where you can see over to the highly rated Steel Canyon, and see that Cottonwood is in far better shape for how green the fairways are.

The clubhouse is a more than a little run down, but hey you are only checking in there. Carts a little dated and slow, but did the trick. If you hit the ball off the fairways right or left be careful getting to your ball could be a little bumpy. A lot of potholes out there.

Cart girl comes around often and has the best attitude i have seen in a cart girl in the past 8 years of playing golf. Look for hot deals and underpars where you can get a good deal.

Never again Eastlake.

Played twice, and both rounds over 5 1/2 hours. Zero crap given by the management. We called when there was 5 tee times in one hole. Yes you read that correct 5 tee times on one single hole. Called clubhouse and they said they has a marshall out. Liars. Didn't see one for 18 holes.

Next we were only a 3some and called to add our buddy and was told no. Then in hole 2 they brought a random single out. We asked him, and he said he was a walk on. They may have changed ownership, but same crappy services. If golf is becoming 5 plus hour rounds more people will leave the game. Thanks Eastlake. You'll never see my money again

We are truly sorry for the slow pace of play. We never want our guests to have poor experiences while playing our golf course.

Knock it off rep from Eastlake. Your course reviews all say the same, and yet you refuse to change it. Stop apologizing and start doing something about it.

This is your warning

Alert!!! 6 1/2 hour round Alert!!!

Our tee time was 1130, and we did not finish 18 holes. Yes, that is correct, an 1130 tee time unable to finish 18 holes. Unacceptable! the pace of play, and zero marshalls to monitor.

First, I knew going to the course that it would be in bad shape, and i was fine with that. To make sure its very clear, the course is like concrete. You might as well be playing on the street. If my buddy did not get a Groupon from Santa, then i would never pay this dump.

By the 4th hole, we found out why it was so slow. Two groups of buddies had joined together, and we had to call the clubhouse to break up their party. Sadly the pace of play never recovered, since they were not that good anyway.

After the horrible round, and not being able to finish; we figured lets just have a beer. Part 2 of the horrible customer service. The girl sold us the beer, and then proceeded to tell us that she was closing, and we had to sit outside. All while one of the NFL games was on. We were not the only ones in the bar either. Come on, its a bar on a golf course, you don't close till the last person leaves. Especially if they are buying from you. She must have had better plans.

Finally, and the worst part of all this is, i emailed the course general manager to let him know about this, 48 hours later not a response. Not to worry you got my $35 dollars, but you will never see another penny form myself, or the 30+ people in my golf group. Your course has been blacklisted by my group. Great decision to not respond to me,

Please do not give this course any of your hard-earned money. You can play so many other courses in that area for the same price.

Falling Apart

Just like the last 4 reviews, this course is just a dump now. We played Presido/Mission, and still this course is in the worst shape i have seen it in 10 years. For them to charge $60 to play it is insane. Yes i paid it, but never again. Fairways on both 9's are in horrible shape. Bare spots everywehre. 50% percent of the fairways were muddy. Only glimmer of hope, is the greens where fast and pretty true.

Come on Riverwalk, either put in a little effort, or just close up shop. Everyone knows you are closing down at least Friars, but with this effort, you should just consider shutting down all operations.

Golfers be warned from this and the last 4 reviews. This course is in horrible shape. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE

Play at least once

Nice course, with decent staff. Only advice; call them if you book a golfnow hot deal, and make sure lakes is on your round. The other 2 courses although in great shape are boring, and repeatable. I would not play here again unless lakes was part of my 18.

A trip home

I am originally from NH, but now live in San Diego CA, and played this course on a trip home over Labor Day. My friends had told me that NH was in a drought, but from my views the course was in great shape, with plenty of grass on the fairways. If you want to see a drought look at some of the courses here in SD, can you say brown from the burn.

I think the course was in great shape. Challenging, but not overwhelming. It winds through the forest, and has a few great doglegs. Very picturesque and enjoyable. Staff was super awesome. One of our players was a little late, and they allowed us to go out without delay when he showed.

the only thing that was odd to me was the gas golf carts. Maybe i am spoiled in San Diego with all electric carts.

When i return home again one day i will make sure that this course is on my list at the top to play.

Another Great day

Played here on 3/29/2016 and as usual the course was in good condition. Pro shop is always friendly, and accommodating. Used the Underpar deal and, when we finished the first round the lady behind the counter was great and trying to get us right back out ASAP. Unfortunately the first tee was backed up three tee times by then, and we decided not to play. No fault of the course, just slower players than us. We finished the first round in less than 3 hours with a foursome. Greens are still recovering from being punched, and were a little sandy; but nothing to complain about because they still rolled pretty true.

I will say the reason for the 4 stars versus 5 is because holes 11-14 were either being fixed or there was a maintenance guy on a tractor digging up the entire fairway. Twin Oaks is one of my favorite places to play, and should at least be played once by everyone. Look for underpar deals, totally worth the two for 75 they charge.

WOW is all i can say

My time is running up on my SD resident card and I wanted to play Balboa and Torry in the same weekend. Tee time at 315 and got off a little early, which is always nice.

I was absolutely amazed on how good the course looked. I play 3 times a week, and this course is in better shape than most courses in SD. Both myself and my playing partners were amazed on how good the course looked, especially in the past this course is a little less then desirable.

The only draw back is the prehistoric way they make you pay and then go to get carts in another area. This is so ridiculous, but hey the course totally made up for it.

Its going to be a long day

I am so torn to write this review since I love this course to play, but hate, hate hate (yes that is 3 hates) how they just stuff the course with players. Not only do they stuff the course with players, they allow 5somes on weekend days. they have no marshall speeding up the pace of play, which is really annoying when you complain about it.

The course itself is a pretty easy course to navigate, and gives enough challenges to enjoy golf for the 10-20 handicap. Conditions were a little bare in some spots, but I did not expect more from the SD droughts. No course should be condemned because of the lack of water.

HERE IS THE KICKER AND THE REASON I CAN NEVER PLACE THIS COURSE AGAIN. oUR ROUND LITERALLY TOOK 6HRS AND 45 MIN. YES YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY.

The bad part is that the pro shop does nothing to compensate. Please stay away from this course if you plan to finish in a reasonable time.
