Firm, Fast, Challenging

I played this course on 10/8/18, two days before Hurricane Michael made landfall about 140 miles to the east. The conditions were mostly sunny and WINDY. 9 of the holes on this course are laid out east to west; the other 9, west to east. The course is very challenging, and when hitting into the wind, very difficult.
The Bermuda grass greens were firm and fast, running about 11 on the stimpmeter (per the staff). The fairways are plush. This golf club very much has a country club feel to it. There is plenty of sand and water, so bring your A game. Fortunately there are several sets of tees from which to chose, so that a player can select based on their handicap.

Fun, Affordable Golf

This course to me was classic Florida municipal golf. No frills, affordable, and in very good shape. Some subtle elevation changes made this course more interesting.
The front nine was pretty tight -- out of bounds to the left of holes 5, 7, 8, 9, and OB behind hole 6. The back nine opens up a bit more, but there is still OB on holes 10, 11, 12, and 18. The Bermuda grass fairways and greens were in good shape.
This course was fun for me. Challenging enough to keep your attention, but not punitive enough to make you walk off mad. I'll play it again when I'm in the Pensacola area.

Scenic, Challenging Course

I played this course for the first time on 9/16/18. It features two par-3s with forced carries over water and three par-5s with approach shots over a large creek. Several other holes have water / marshes come into play adjacent to the fairway. The fairways are pretty generous, but if you hit it way off-line, your ball is gone.
The tee boxes and fairways (Bermuda grass) are in very good shape. The greens are bent grass, and most of them have rough areas from the summer heat. The green on hole #1 was closed due to re-seeding, and a temporary green carved out of the fairway. That was the only real disappointment for me. I didn't think the greens were as bad as they are depicted in some of the other 2018 reviews, but they do need some TLC.
I will play this course again, probably in the late spring before the summer heat takes its toll.

Oak Hills Continues to Improve

I play this course about once every three weeks. The greens are generally in great shape with the exception of numbers 5 and 14. They are in the shade and struggle a bit during the hot summer weather, but should improve with fall around the corner. The rough between #10 and #18, and #6 fairway, has some erosion that needs to be addressed, but all in all this course is in good shape. The staff is friendly; I'll play this course again.

Fun, Very Playable Course

Country Creek has generous Bermuda grass fairways and large, bentgrass greens. Plenty of room off the tee to let 'er rip. Played 18 holes and did not lose a single golf ball. Majority of the greens are elevated, so if you want to score, your approach irons must be on target. Several of the greens are large enough to make a two-club difference from front to back.
The snack bar is somewhat limited in its offerings, and they do not sell alcohol. But the golf was enjoyable and the pace of play was pretty good, too -- 18 holes in about 3-1/2 hours. I'll be back.

Bring Your "A" Game

This golf course winds through a housing community and wooded area. You seldom see an adjacent hole. That being said, you better hit it straight. There are plenty of opportunities to lose golf balls (I lost four)
The Bermuda grass greens were in pretty good shape, but are somewhat grainy. The fairways are in good shape. This course does need some trimming around the edges -- there were overgrown areas around bunkers, water hazards, etc. Just some weed-eating that would give the course a much neater look. The areas that were overgrown did not appear to be that way by design.
If you are using a Skycaddie, select White to Blue or Blue to White. The Red nine is closed with the exception of its hole #9. I played that hole in lieu of hole #2 on the White nine because hole #2 was closed.
The greens fees are very reasonable, and I got a Hot Deal on GolfNow, which made it better. I would recommend this very challenging course.

Four (4) Temporary Greens

Except for the four (4) temporary greens on the Sand nine, this course was in very good shape. I played Sandpiper years ago when it had bentgrass greens. They converted to a strain of Bermuda grass a few years ago, and they withstand the hot summers a lot better. The four holes that had temp greens were just a couple weeks from being back on their regulation greens.

I teed off in the afternoon, around 1:00 PM, and finished my round in just over 3 hours.

Oak Hills is in Good Shape

I play this course about once a month, and I see improvements each time I play. The bent grass greens are in generally good shape. There are two greens that struggle in the summer heat (#5, 14), but the rest are nice. Bermuda grass is filling the fairways so you will usually get a good lie. There are a few bare spots here and there, but only if you hit it off line. It is located in the country so there are no jet planes landing nearby; nice and quiet.
I recommend this course and will play it again.

Donald Ross Municipal Gold Course

This course is challenging, but fun. It's one of the flattest courses I've ever played. Most of the greens are elevated in true Donald Ross fashion. I played it in the winter so the Bermuda grass was dormant, resulting in some pretty tight lies. The greens were in excellent shape.
If you are a fan of Donald Ross designs, then this one is worth a look. And the cost is inexpensive (weekday greens fees + cart was less than $30).

Fun, Well Manicured, Challenging Course

This was the third of 3 courses I played in the Gulf Shores area, and was my favorite. Played the ball down (as I always do) and did not draw a bad lie anywhere. Bermuda fairways, rough, and greens.
Pace of play was a little slower than I would have liked, but the course was packed the day I played. Staff was very friendly. I'll definitely play this one again.

Ye Must Hit It Straight at Lost Key

If you are a good ball striker, then you will love this track. It is part of an Audubon nature preserve; most holes are lined on both sides by lateral hazards. Hit it off the beaten path and you're taking a penalty stroke (I lost 5 balls but found 14).
The sand bunkers are large and deep. Some are difficult to walk in and out of; a few that I encountered had not been raked by the previous golfer due to the slope.
The Bermuda greens were excellent, perfect speed and smooth.
When you make a par on any hole here, you know you've done something. If you hit it crooked, bring plenty of golf balls.

Excellent Layout, Needs Some Work

I do not agree with the reviewers that gave this course only 1 star. This course just needs some work. The fairways were spotty in areas, but I did not encounter any areas that were pure dirt or sand. The greens do need to be mowed, however -- they were very soft and extremely slow.
Pace of play was a bit slow on the front nine due to one slow group, but after they quit at the turn, the back nine went fast.
I will play this course again the next time I'm in Gulf Shores and hopefully they will continue to make improvements.

Short, Hilly, Difficult, Scenic

I played this course from the white tees and started on hole #10. Just MUST hit the ball straight, especially on the back nine. There are no bail-out areas. I enjoyed the front nine a bit more because it was more scenic and a little more forgiving.
The bentgrass greens were in great shape, and the fairways were plush with Bermuda grass.
Local knowledge is helpful; number 15 is a strategic par-5 that ate my lunch (don't hit driver off the tee). I look forward to playing this course again.

Fun, Hilly Course

Oak Hills has made several improvements to their course since last year. There were two tee boxes that were bare that have been sodded and are now in good shape. All 18 bent grass greens are in play. The hot summer weather has taken a toll on numbers 5 and 13, but generally the greens roll true and are in above-average shape (bent grass greens do not like hot weather).
There are a few bare spots here and there, but the Bermuda fairways have a good plush layer of grass on them.
I always enjoy playing here because the pace of play is usually good, and the staff is always friendly.

Well-Conditioned, Enjoyable Golf Course

I have played Smyrna G.C. numerous times through the years; this was the 1st time I used GolfNow.com to book my round. The bent grass greens were in very good condition, which is remarkable considering the middle Tennessee heat. The fairways had a good stand of Bermuda grass on them.
The course was crowded on a Sunday afternoon, but the pace of play was good. We played 18 holes in 4 hours flat.
The snack bar and pro shop are well-stocked and have very reasonable prices.

Very Nice 9-Hole Layout

This course has two sets of tees so that you can play 18 holes and get a different feel on the second nine. The fairways were plush Bermuda grass, and the greens are a newer strain of Bermuda and were in great condition.
Elevation changes on holes 6, 7, and 8 add to the character and challenge of this course. I thoroughly enjoyed my round here.

Two Holes Ruin this Golf Course

I'll start with the pros -- the greens were in excellent condition. Some of the smoothest bentgrass greens I've played, and that's saying something for a course in middle Tennessee, where the summers are tough on bentgrass.
Several reviewers complained about bare spots; except for three holes (#3, 5, 14), I found the fairways had a good stand of grass on them.
Now the cons -- the cart paths are rough. That's not a big deal to me, but confirms what other reviewers have stated.
The course could use some grooming around the edges. If an un-mown area is supposed to be a hazard, then mark it as such.
The biggest drawback was the quirky layout of holes #3 and #15, both double dog-leg par-5s. Both require forced carries off the tee, then another forced carry on the 2nd or 3rd shot. I stood on the blue tee box of #3 and had no idea where I should aim. At the big tree? Left of it? Right of it? I hit it left to the safe area, but had very little target left for a second shot. It is hard to describe here. Holes #3 and #15 are the poorly designed / borderline unfair type that you remember, and that is unfortunate because this course has a number of fun, challenging holes.
I'm sorry that I can't recommend this course.

Scenic Course Surrounded by Hills

I played this course in March of 2017 for the first time in 13 years. The course is essentially the same with a few more houses built around the periphery.
The bermuda grass fairways were dormant but are full when warm weather sets in. The bent grass greens were in excellent condition and rolled true. This course is located a few miles east of Cookeville, TN and is in a hollow surrounded by hills. It is quite scenic and very quiet -- no planes or jets overhead, no major highways nearby.
The pro shop is stocked very well and the grille offers several tasty items. Staff was very friendly.
Pace of play on the front nine was quick, but slowed down considerably on the back due to a gambling foursome that had several groups backed up (there were four groups at one time on the par-5 18th hole). But this place is usually not terribly crowded.

Enjoyable, Challenging Course

This course was formerly known as Sunsweet Hills, and it is one of the more enjoyable courses I have played. Quite challenging. The front nine is routed in a clockwise direction around the perimeter of the property; the back nine routes counter-clockwise near the center around a chain of ponds and lakes. The Bermuda grass fairways were just awakening from their winter dormancy. I would like to play this one again in a couple of months; it will likely be plush. The course is scenic and features a pecan tree grove on a few holes.
I'm not sure what type of Bermuda grass comprises the greens, but they putted true. Some greens are heavily contoured.
The 19th hole did not have much to offer, but the golf course more than makes up for it.

Tight, Well-Conditioned Course

This course meanders through a golf community and is fairly tight. There are a few holes with bail-out areas, but for the most part, you have to hit it straight.
Not sure what type of Bermuda grass is used for the greens, but they were receptive and putted great.
Sand traps were well-kept, and fairways were closely mown. You could tell the maintenance crew is on their game here.
Pace of play was great on the front nine, but a foursome wouldn't let us through on the back so it was a bit slow. Otherwise I would have give the pace of play 5 stars.
I will play this course again if I'm ever in the Pensacola Beach area.
