Water, Water Everywhere!

Very nice golf course, and to me, very difficult. I did not hit the ball well and shot an 88 (I have an 8 handicap).
There is water on 14 of 18 holes. I lost 3 balls and would have lost a 4th if not for my handy 20-foot retriever. But don't let the difficulty scare you away -- this course was in very good condition and is a fun challenge. Local knowledge also helps, so if you get a chance to play with a local, do so.
The views from the 4th tee box and 7th green toward the Santa Rosa Sound are very scenic.
Pace of play was great -- I teed off at 2:00 PM by myself and played in 3 hours flat. Clubhouse staff was friendly; all in all a good golf experience, my high score notwithstanding.

Country Hills -- Perfectly Named

As the title suggests, this course is located in the country, and is hilly, Lots of elevation changes. Local knowledge helps -- you might want to take a look at hole #1's landing area if playing for the first time (otherwise a perfect tee ball will find the water).
The bentgrass greens weathered the hot Middle Tennessee summer very well, and were in good condition. Bermuda fairways were also in good shape with a minimal number of bare spots.
Plenty of nice vistas, especially from the 13th green and 14th tee.

Oak Hills -- Yes, There are Hills

Probably the hilliest course I have ever played, and that's saying something -- I grew up playing a hilly course in Nashville.
Course condition -- the greens were smooth, soft, and receptive. The fairways, for the most part, had a good stand of Bermuda grass, but there were bare spots, especially on hole #6. Several tee boxes had suffered winter kill and were 50% bare.
Layout -- the front nine of this course has been altered due to the sale of some property to developers (the former hole #7 is now residences). The former hole #2, a killer par-5, has been split into a short par-3 and a par-4 (holes #5 & #6). SkyCaddie has not been updated, so it was difficult to discern yardages on some front-9 holes. The hilly layout created several blind shots.
My only complaint about this course is the back-nine par 3's, especially #16. A tiny, bare tee box tucked back in the trees, with a 150-yard carry over water, to a narrow green protected by water front and left, and trees right and back. There is simply no room to miss your tee shot here. And #13, a 96-yard par-3, appears as if they ran out of real estate after 17 holes and decided to place a tee box and green along the lake.
Local knowledge is a must. You have to know where and where not to hit the ball. I'll play it again simply to see how much better I score now that I have some familiarity with the course. And the beer is relatively cheap -- only $10 for a six-pack.

Classic Donald Ross Design

This course is a must-play if you are a fan of Donald Ross designs.
The greens were some of the smoothest Bermuda-grass greens I've ever played. They rolled true and were of medium speed. The Bermuda grass fairways were closely mown and offered pool-table top lies.
The rough is thin, but there are plenty of sandy scrub areas, trees, and palmetto bushes to challenge a recovery shot.
I was paired with a couple of members who were friendly and shared their local knowledge.

Classic Donald Ross Course

If you are a fan of Donald Ross-designed golf courses, then you must play this one. Very enjoyable layout. The greens were some of the smoothest Bermuda-grass greens I have ever played. They putted very true. I was paired with two local members who were very friendly and knowledgeable.
This course is not real long by today's standards, but you must hit it straight. The rough is thin, but trees, water hazards, and bunkers await stray shots.

A Hidden Gem

I'll try to be brief. This course is worth the drive; if you've played the Fairfield Glade courses and been pleased, then you will love this one. The course is cut through a forest in the hills near Center Hill Lake (although you will only get a glimpse of the lake from #12 green / #13 tee box). Fairways are zoysia, rough is Bermuda, greens are bent grass. Fairways are fairly generous, but if you miss one, you're headed into the woods.
The course was in excellent condition. The only "con" I have is that you must bring your range finder or Skycaddie -- there are NO 100-yard or 150-yard markers anywhere. I was guessing at yardages the entire round. The distances between several greens and tee boxes are very long, so you will want to ride. I hope this remote course can make a go of it -- I will definitely play it again.

Fairly Priced Municipal Golf

I played this course on Friday, July 3. I was paired up with a threesome that had an 11:20 AM tee time. We teed off at 11:45 AM, and walked off the 18th green at 4:30 PM, just before a thunderstorm hit.
This is a fun course and fairly priced, but needless to say, the pace of play was terrible. Weather permitting, play it in the afternoon when it is not so crowded -- your pace of play will improve.
Course conditions were good -- Bermuda grass fairways closely mown, and Bermuda grass greens. I could not figure out the putting surfaces, but they were in decent condition.
Not a bucket-list course, but if you enjoy municipal-style golf courses, give it a try.

The Pearl Should be on your Must-Play List

I played the East course. Most of the holes wander through pine forest, but the last three have excellent views of marsh that borders the intracoastal waterway.
The greens have MiniVerde Bermuda grass and are very receptive to approach shots. They had been verticut and top-dressed, but still putted O.K. Fairways and sand traps were in excellent condition.
The starters and beverage girl were very friendly; I was virtually invisible to the pro shop staff. Oh well, I saved $50 I otherwise would have spent on a new shirt.
I played as a single behind a foursome (who would not let me play through) and finished in just under four hours.

Worth the Drive to Loris, SC

I played this course in the afternoon when the heat keeps most golfers indoors. I played 18 holes in under 3 hours as a single (played through three groups).
The greens are standard Bermuda grass; they are full, but a bit slow. The fairways are in good condition, and the sand traps are well maintained.
This course cuts through a remote pine forest. You seldom see an adjacent hole. The fairways are fairly wide, but if you miss one, you're in the outback. I did not see any snakes, but based on the surroundings, there are probably plenty of opportunities. Just stay in the short grass.
I recommend this course.

Eastport -- Not Long, but Tight

I played this course in July 2014 and decided to play it again. The pace of play wasn't as good this time; we were held up by a twosome who were incredibly slow on the greens. Had we been able to play through, we would have finished an 18 hole round in three hours.
This course features the standard Bermuda grass greens you find in the Myrtle Beach area. They are in good shape, but a bit grainy and slow. The fairways are in good condition (full Bermuda grass), and the sand bunkers are well-maintained.
This course is only 6,200 yards from the tips, but you better hit it straight. Several holes have woods left and right, so there are no bail-out areas. The back nine has four holes with forced carries over water.
This course is well worth the trip to Little River, SC, and you can't beat the price.

Nice Metro Nashville Public Course

Two Rivers G.C. opened in the mid-1970's, and I have played it numerous times through years. It is relatively short by today's yardage standards, but is plenty of golf course for a mid-amateur from the back tees. The greens are usually in good shape year-round. I played this round in early May when the Bermuda grass fairways were still coming in. By late May / early June, the fairways are plush. Two consecutive icy winters have generated a few bare spots due to grass kill, but they will fill in by mid-summer.
This course is fairly open, but there are several no-mow areas you want to avoid. I recommend this course for anyone who enjoys no-frills municipal golf at a reasonable price.

Challenging, but not too Difficult

I played this course from the white tees and had an enjoyable round. The fairways are generally in good shape but had a few bare spots due to the rough winter of 2014. The greens are bent grass and putted true; they would get 10 out of 10 if more players would repair their ball marks. There are a few par fours where you absolutely have to hit it straight -- there are no "bail out" areas. Its location is a plus as well -- very quiet, no jets overhead or busy streets adjacent to it. I definitely recommend giving this course a try.

A Tale of Two Nines

The front nine at Hunters Point is relatively short, with several par-4 holes that are driver - wedge (or less). The back nine is another story -- holes 10 and 14 are par fours that are 450+ yards from the blue tees, and hole #17 is a 425 yard par-4. Hole #18 is a 590-yard par-5, with a large pond guarding the front of the green. #18 is Hunters Point's signature hole -- imagine playing this hole back in the 1970's with persimmon woods.
I played this course in mid-March when the grass was dormant, so it was not in very good shape. Will play it again in the summer when things "green up".
