The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch
Played On 12/27/2014They call it Crazy for a reason...
If you're a beginner or a 20 plus hdcp, this course can eat you alive. The course has a very good layout and has its challenges, the greens are small and are very fast; miss that 4 foot put and you can easily be coming back from 8 feet. Make sure you get a good feel for the greens on the practice green before getting on the first green. At least half of the tee boxes are elevated. After the first round you'll realize where you need to place your shots; end up on the wrong side and it will cost strokes. Bunkers have real sand; easy to get out of. Course has great scenery/views of the Salinas Valley, good facilities and has challenges.
Salinas Fairways Golf Course
Played On 11/28/2014Great for beginners
Course is wide open; great for beginners. Has practice facilities, because the course gets a lot of use and can be packed, the course is in pretty good shape. Highly recommend booking a tee time.
Hunter Ranch Golf Course
Played On 05/30/2014A Must Play
Finally played it for the first time.
Kept hearing we had to have lunch even if we didn't play the course; food was great.
The course was in excellent shape; greens were quick, but rolled true.
Nice layout, nice views with a couple of water carries.
The staff was very friendly.
Lakes/Canyon at Blacklake Golf Course
Played On 05/29/2014If you happen to be in the area...
This course is made up of three nine holes - The Lakes, the Oaks and the Canyon.
We played the Lakes on the front nine and the Oaks on the back...
The Lakes course is pretty wide open so easy to recover any stray shots while the Oaks has tighter fairways on some holes. Greens were well maintained. Our cart started dying around the 16th hole; had to push the cart from the 18th green back to the cart shed... LOL!
Enjoyed the Oaks better than the Lakes. Would consider going back to play the Canyon course.
Avila Beach Golf Resort
Played On 05/29/2014Course Was Still Closed
Tee time was set for 7:05 so we got there at 6:30 to grab a cup of coffee and warm up at the range and found the pro shop, the snack bar/restaurant and range were still closed.
Walked around the pro shop and there was a guy hanging out in the maintenance shed. He said we were early and that he was going to have to give us a dirty cart. The guys who were suppose to clean the carts and get them ready had been drinking the night before instead of getting the carts ready.
Then he said he didn’t have any range balls and for us to go out to the range and just find balls out there and hit those…The sprinklers were still on when we tee'd off.
There were a couple of holes we weren't sure which fairway was ours. The front nine is actually 8 holes and the back nine 10 holes.
A lot of ravines so bring all of your old golf balls and play them instead.
One positive comment; the greens were in pretty good shape.
Quail Lodge Resort & Golf Club
Played On 02/17/2014Can't wait to play it again...
This was my second time playing this course. If you're an NCGA member, you get discounted fees which includes the range, cart and 18 holes. The starters made sure I had everything I needed - were very attentive.
This course meanders through very expensive homes and through the beautiful Carmel Valley. There isn't a bad hole on the entire course.
The greens were in excellent shape and each fairway/hole is unique. Because it's so beautiful and scenic, it felt the round went too fast...
I will be playing this course more often and Edgar's Restaurant (below the pro shop) is an excellent stop after a round.
Monterey Pines Golf Club
Played On 02/16/2014Monterey Pines
The course was renovated a few years ago and we made sure to play it while it was in great condition. After these past few years, Monterey Pines has done a great job in keeping the course in very good condition.
As a single player, was able to complete 18 holes in 3 1/2 hrs on a Sunday with a 12:28 tee time.
The course is fairly open with a couple of water hazards and pine trees to line the fairways. The greens are in great shape.
For those on a limited budget, add this course for your weekend getaway.

Pacific Grove Golf Links
Played On 02/25/2013Staff was very friendly and engaging. Greens were in very good shape and the pace of play was kept at about 4 hours.
Friendly staff and the locals I played with were great company. Turns out I ended up playing with one of the marshals who took note of the condition of the course. The greens were in very good shape and how can you not enjoy the back nine up against the Pacific ocean.
