Soggy on a beautiful day

Worst drainage of any course I've played in the PNW. And the greens that supposedly got good reviews ok the past were a spongy moss. I lost 4 balls in the first 9 holes that I hit into the fairway. That's how their upkeep had been. Not sure the course layout would even provide an interesting round during summer months either.

Good value

Great value for under $20 a round with a "hot deal." Marshals were friendly and informative, and they made their presence known on the course to keep the pace up as much as possible. The greens were a little more beat up than normal from people not fixing their ball marks, so I fixed 3-4 every hole. My biggest complaint would be that it was a sweltering 91 degrees out and I only saw the drink cart once, and that was right before the turn, so it was virtually pointless. They could have made quite a bit from my foursome alone if they had been out.
All in all, heron lakes is one of the best public facilities in the portland area, and the two courses offer something for every skill level.

Value round

This course is only worth it if you get a good deal through golf now. i.e. $16 and under.
The rough was about 8 inches in places. The freshly mowed grass was strewn about the course. The greens had been recently plugged or something, but they rolled at about a 4.
I've golfed there a couple dozen times in the last year and the staff has yet to be friendly.

Not a winter course

terrible course. They didn't have real tee boxes, they had mats like those from a driving range. There was no fairway to speak of, which might not seem like a big deal for a par 3 course, but the greens were tiny and there wasn't even a fringe to chip from. You were either on the green or in the deep rough. And speaking of deep rough, the drainage was so poor that if you have any sort of loft in your shot and you miss a green, good luck finding your ball. It will not only be lost in the tall grass, it will be plugged. Also no bunkers whatsoever. If you're a golfer avoid this course. If you're not and you want to go hack around, have at it.

Great place when you get a deal

I went on a Saturday which I tend to shy away from this course on the weekends, especially weekends during a major, cause every hacker in town tends to flood the course. For example, this last visit I was eventually behind a FIVESOME of the worlds worst slicers. While I do realize every one has to start somewhere, the Marshall was nowhere to be seen to help the speed of play. Which wouldn't bother me as much if they weren't so stern when their men's club or regulars are out playing. Keep it consistent for all paying customers.
That said, this course usually has a few great deals a week and this was the case for my last trip... $12 for 18!
The greens are well kept, and the fairways are decent. The rest is kind of poor. But this isn't the course to come to if you're looking for a view and beautiful water hazards.

Interesting combination of short and long

The par 4's were some of the shortest I've ever played (either driveable or a drive a chip) and the par 3's were some of the longest requiring solid long iron play. Great course to work on different facets of your game.
We walked 18 and couldn't have asked for a more leisurely course to do so. Very flat and tucked into a very clean community with beautiful homes on every fairway.
The staff was very friendly, but the welcoming atmosphere of the course's regular folders was what made it stand out.
We plan on returning to this course that's just a quick trip from downtown.
