Playgolf Colchester - Academy Course
Played On 05/12/2023Underrated course
Played this course many times, and it's always a pretty tough challenge with few chances to get the driver out and rip-it, you have to think your way around most holes. The walk from 10-11 is always a killer, but the course was very clear on a Friday afternoon so a 5 minute time-out to get the heart rate down always helps.
In the past the greens have been so-so, but there were no complaints at all this time - clearly there's been some investment with the fairways showing little sign of wear too.
Not so much of a clubhouse afterwards, it's more of a cafe supporting the on-site range, but it does mean there's almost always going to be food available whatever time you finish.
Only negative - there are a number of bunkers devoid of sand and have been classed as "GUR", although on some holes it can really help if you know where they are !
Oh, and there's an American Golf outlet on site too, with staff always friendly and willing to chat and advise both before and after.
Give it a visit, you'll be pleasantly surprised and if you can get a Hot Deal it's a bargain.

Weather was going to be dry when I booked it, but we had a deluge on the day and for the first nine holes. Course couldn't take it and many greens were un-puttable.
Course is a good challenge though, some long par 3s, and most holes require a bit of strategy rather than just blasting a driver as far as you can.
Putting green and warm-up nets are in odd places - not exactly accessible prior to starting the round, but that's the only complaint really.
Worth a go

Great course in good condition, although no-one appears to ever repair their pitch marks. Otherwise the course was I great condition - punishing rough, great fairways and fast true greens.
Just don’t bother trying to get a drink or anything afterwards - it’s table service only and now-one ever bothers to come to you. When you go to the bar, you’ll get a ton of attitude from the barman.
Shame, because the courses are well worth playing.

Rude staff, no off course facilities. Not good
Arrived 45 minutes early for a midday tee off and wasn’t allowed to book in. No explanation just “come back at 12”. But that’s our tee time?”. “Sorry, come back then”.
Warming up and chatting to other guys doing the same it became apparent there was a tournament going off at 12 and they wanted the course clear ahead of them. Shame the guy in the office couldn’t be bothered to explain. In the end we got forced to go out from the 10th so it wasn’t an issue anyway. Odd.
The round takes under 4 hours, which seems to be good going these days. Eventually the 4 ball ahead begrudgingly lets our 2 ball through and there are clear holes ahead as far as you can see. We knew they stopped doing food at 4pm but we’d made it with 10 minutes to spare. I picked up a menu and didn’t even get to look at it before I was told they’d stopped doing food.
“Oh ok, when do you stop doing food then?”
“4pm”
“But it’s 10 to?”
“Yeah chef went home half an hour ago”
“So you stop doing food at half 3?”
“No, 4pm”
“In 10 minutes time?”
Pause. “I can do you a drink, do you bloody want one or not?”
Sadly that’s an improvement on the time before when we came off the course at half 4 and the whole clubhouse was shut and locked up.
It’s a good tough course but it just appears to be run badly.
Avoid. Unless you enjoy being treated shoddily.
