Ocotillo Golf Club - White/Gold
Played On 04/18/2020In need of attitude adjustment
I love this course. Love the layout. I live on the course. I am an Oasis card holder. But after defending it for years I have to say it. Aside from the food and beverage service staff, and the guys at the bag drop, the attitude around here needs help. In the pro shop that attitude varies from arrogant, to downright grumpy (yesterday afternoon). They are doing nothing to make a customer feel special. It saddens me to say, but yesterday, after playing here together dozens and dozens and dozens of times, my wife said she didn’t want to play here any more.
Please fix this Ocotillo!
Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club
Played On 06/09/2019Great course but stay away for June
First, this is a really, really nice and challenging course. Bring your sand wedge. You may be giving it quite a workout. Great options for tee boxes. Super long, long, medium.
However there are two problems right now. One, The greens, which are normally perfect, got punched last week. Putting is nearly impossible right now.
The other problem is mosquitos. They assault you the second you get out of your car. Clouds of them. Bring extra bug repellent. But even if you do, and apply liberally 2-3 times, they will still be all over you like a cheap suit every step of the way.. Depending on your psychological makeup, the mosquito problem exists along a continuum beginning at “they will subtract from your experience” all the way to “they will drive you stark raving mad. “
Again, great course. Challenging and fun layout. Usually in super good shape. But I won’t be going back for a little while.
Bear Creek Golf Complex - Bear Course
Played On 03/23/2019Good track, good value
What I always like about the Bear is the layout. Long par fives. Long par fours. Short par fours. A possibly driveable par four. Long par threes. Shorter par threes. I get to use every club in my bag.
Conditions-wise. She’s sometimes a bit scrappy. But not so this winter. Played on March 23. Fairways and greens in good shape.
A good value for the $$
Arizona Biltmore Golf Club - Links Course
Played On 06/22/2019Great track right in the middle of Phoenix
Fun layout. Front nine in the valley, mostly flat. Back nine more fun and challenging. They sell a summer pass. $150 for six rounds. Other stuff included - room rates, drink coupons. Good deal. If you haven’t played here, put it on your list.
Bear Creek Golf Complex - Bear Course
Played On 11/05/2016UNDERRATED
I moved here 13 years ago, played the Bear once back then and decided I never needed to play there again. But a year ago I gave it another chance and I am glad I did. Have played there regularly for the last 8 months. Some fun challenging holes, including long par fives and long par 3s, and one almost drivable par 4. The overseeding came in beautifully, better than Ocotillo, where I live. Greens and fairways are in excellent shape. The clubhouse and facilities may not be private club level, but the staff is friendly, and the layout and conditions are great. Great value for the $$.
Ocotillo Golf Club - White/Gold
Played On 09/16/2016Always Great
I hesitate to throw this out there because I don't want the place to get too crowded, but there are three nines, and they manage overseeding season so well that Ocotillo is one of the only really good courses I know of in the Phoenix area that will have 18 holes in good shape through all of late September and October.
Outside of that, always in good shape. Not your typical desert golf, with water in play on 21 or 22 of the 27 holes, and plenty of fun ones that make you think twice about your club and shot selection. Attentive staff.
