Golf North fails again

Has such potential to play well. But zero attention to overbooking, slow play, allowing FIVEsomes off the first tee. Golf North fail.

Unacceptable

So-so pace of play on the front nine followed by an abysmal pace on the back nine. On a jammed Sunday, they were sending random groups off of any open 9. “Open” is a loose term here as three groups waited ahead of us on the 10th hole as we made the turn. The marshals for golf north are useless as they just blame the clubhouse. Nothing is fixed or improved. Random people send themselves away as the starter just fans his arms saying he can’t control anything. I’ll never play this course again. $30 is a rip off for the lack of courtesy the staff here gives to the game and the customers.

Cottage Course

Tough when drives up the middle bounce to feskew because of the Canadian Shield. 8th hole is my favorite par 3 ever in history (played 104 courses so far). Worth the price of admission alone.

Better than expected

Nearby courses have the more stellar reputations. They are also twice the cost. This spot is unassuming and a great test of the game. Best part is that fescue is minimal so you’ll routinely find stray shots. Greens are tougher on the easier GIR holes. I’ll play again here.

Decent course/Not decent pace

Check in was fine.

Course was dry which is fine in this heat but I won’t say it was in great shape. I just can’t, especially paying nearly $100 w/ cart to play it.

What put me off, and the whole game off, was that we started on time with 12 minute spacing between tee times. After 8 minutes, putting on #1, look back and see the next group waiting on their approaches. For the next 17 holes, we are on the tail end of the group ahead of us and have a group right behind us. This is golf on occasion, but to allow hole 1 not to be spaced properly is unacceptable.

Patio at the end wa a great.

Great course to teach a friend the game. For the price, don’t be unfair and compare it to level courses.

Winter Golf

November 21, 2019

It is what it is. Guy in the pro shop was super friendly. Greens thankfully not tarped, great spot for a 5 degree day game instead of hitting into a simulator. Par 3s are very long. Greens are rough but they are still greens. Don’t expect much, keep a positive attitude, and have a good time. We are spoiled with luxury courses in Ontario. Places like these will be folklore in 30 years. Enjoy the experience.

For the player who wants to break 80 once.

No sand, very little water.

Lots of short par 4s produce the odd eagle putt.

13th green is two tiered like a mini putt hole.

3rd hole has a narrow chute, iron instead of driver is safest and play for par or bogey. Lots of birdie chances to get it back.

6th hole is my favorite, cut the corner with a long wood and make the green for an eagle try.

8th hole is also reachable with driver. As is 4th.

I’ve hit the stick on par 3 #10 before but it bounced so far away I missed the birdie putt.

Back nine is not as fun but it’s got easy par holes if you had a decent front and need a good score.

GTA Hidden Gem

Cobalt is the longer of the two 18s with a Par 72.

Small annoyance was that I had to get money back at the counter so I could book online rate in the pro shop to get $8 cheaper for the round I was playing. This wasn’t a hot deal, it was rack rate both at the counter and online. Makes little sense to me. Either way, staff member was understanding. Not many courses closer to GTA have rates as competitive as Granite Ridge regardless.

Great shape for fall. Was not happy about a downed tree obstructing the green on #9 with no strategic pin placement to accommodate (move it to the front maybe) instead of having to clean tree bark out of my putt path. Greens were otherwise decent as were the fairways and tee boxes.

Pace at this time of year is always great.

I usually play this course several times in the fall. Never a bad round.

They booked us on the wrong course

Amazing course and in great condition. Kaneff is mostly great in managing their courses but just not at Lionhead. I booked for Masters to get a new course under my belt but they put me on Legends. I even showed them my booking receipt and they still said I was booked on the other course. Baffling.

Pace of plays here was very slow. Twilight times has every business guy leaving work at 3pm and racing to get in front of the next guy only to have awkward waits for the next five hours on the tee boxes. This is a high level course so don’t need book it with executive course timed gaps between tee offs.

I will return because I love golf. But I dread the way this course is handled.

Gem in Guelph

Only private club in Guelph. Elevation changes are surprising and make for use of all the clubs in your bag. Stanley Thompson design makes every shot unique even on easier holes. Played with several members previously unknown and they were all great to me. I payed guest rate which was a tad high but reasonable for a private course. My only suggestion would be that pro shop staff think of strangers as prospective members. Writing this months later and that vibe still sits with me. Starter did a great job. Your time is your time. Any other times reserved by people are respected despite who is there first. I love that.

Best way to play the course as a non member is to get in a tournament, find some online vouchers (Christmas auction, or just call and ask).

Great spot

Priced a bit lower than Cobalt, challenging on your short game, and some very tempting short par 4s for the longball player. Pace of play in the fall is great. Staff are decent too.

Great Views and Value

Golf Now Hot Deal. This course is worth $60 let alone the $34 I paid to walk. This is not a walking course for the casual player. Views are great. Beverage cart Is around plenty. Pace isn’t fast but it’s just not a fast course with all the hills and trouble spots. Scoring is possible even from the tips if you play smart golf. Not a place for novice players.

All show no go

Starter was fine. Teed off on time. First 6 holes were decent. No mention of GUR for the bunkers which were mud and had gravel trenches dig into them clearly in transition for upcoming Ontario Open. Things got bad approaching #7 with the pace clogging up like the 401 full of rubberneckers. Didn’t see beverage cart til #9 while waiting on two groups on fairway. Things got really bad on 10 when the threesome ahead of us played through the worst twosome i have ever seen on a course. These guys drove up to the green and ON the green several times with their cart. No etiquette at all. Would love to have reported it to a marshal but NOT ONE was seen on the course the ENTIRE round. Front nine took 90 minutes. Back nine took 150.

I tend to ignore bad reviews because it seems every course has off days. But if you’re reading this and golf now hot deal has you tempted to play this course, don’t. It’s an amazing layout but run terribly. I’ve played 85 courses so far in my life. This one is in the bottom 10 courses for worst experiences.

Gone Downhill

No starter or marshals early afternoon Sunday led to a feeling of Lord of the Flies on the back 9. This course has so much potential to be great but the vibe is that’s they don’t care. Love the challenging greens and tight fairways. The problem is that the course is left in the hands of young staff who either do not golf or care to pay attention to the course. Throw in weekend hacks playing multiple balls, cutting in on #10 after an hour on the patio and you get some really angry players who paid a lot of money for a Sunday round. Might play again on a weekday for a hot deal but pay anything more than $40 and you’ll be disappointed.

Great Shape

Got a hot deal which is IMO the most affordable way to play it. Fairways are hard with good roll. Greens are amazing. Staff out working on the course en masse. A few need to pay more attention to the tee block of holes they are working on. All said, this is a professional location that care about the game. I was not a fan in past years due to price and lack of elevation but really, this is a great course. 18th is playing as a par 3 this year. Hopefully stays that way. Par 70 is fine.

At first glance I thought I’d eat this course up. Not too much feskew and some short par 4s. Not a single easy green. Lightening fast and egg shell shaped with near impossible pin placements (which is my only complaint).

Spring Golf

Wet conditions, well kept greens. Great staff. Not a lot of elevation change. Great value. Perfect course for the newer player that doesn’t want to get eaten up by the higher slope rating courses nearby. Very clearly a former farm field with 20 year old trees. They lined the fairways well though with moguls, berms, and fescue. A lot better suited for dry summer conditions as the 19th hole indoors is about 5 tables. Outdoors is a larger pavilion.

Always in great shape

GolfNow Hot Deal

10 degree mid afternoon round.

Aeration on greens were small punches so it didn’t wreck the game.

Staff here are happy to have you out and take pride in their course. Small things like asking how your round went shows they care about the customers and respect the game of golf. Also, on October 22nd, yes, October 22nd, they had a starter making sure groups were being spaced and timed properly.
With nearby courses falling to the big-company cost-cutting measures, it’s refreshing to see this independently owned spot treat their players properly. I’ll return many more times.
