Got a great HotDeal on Golfnow.

Staff were friendly enough but nothing special. The course was hit with some pretty heavy rain the day before so conditions were not great in some places.

I arrived 45 mins early to hit some golf balls only to be told the range was closed due to the wet conditions. I then asked to go out earlier which they accommodated but when checking in with the starter was told to just go up and join in where you can.

It was a rather slow round 4:50. I joined up with a 2some who were polite but not overly friendly. A single went out just before us. We played together before hitting a backlog around hole #5. Another single caught up and then joined us to form a foursome. We then let another single play through at one point. Never saw a marshall but some better control of pace of play and pairing up the singles might have been more efficient.

I have played here a few times and like the layout very much and find some of the holes and views to be spectacular. On this round the course was slow and at times the conditions were average. They did suffer some damage due to the heavy rain and were trying to address some of it as we played.

Some bunkers were full of water, some pathways were damaged and there was some debris in places around some greens but, again, in fairness they suffered some heavy rain.

I would play here again but only at the right price point. As a Troon course they need to up their game.

kirbycat,
Thank you for taking the time to review Lookout Mountain Golf Course. Phoenix has experienced the wettest October on record so it has put our maintenance team behind schedule in some areas and we appreciate your understanding as we worked hard to have the course playable. We will address with our Starters to ensure play goes off as planned and as efficiently as possible, as to not interrupt your play or anyone else's. We hope you will give us another try as the course is really coming around since we have dried out.

Had a nice experience here. Got paired up with some locals, 2 who were pleasant, the third had some anger issues with his game which was distracting at times.

I liked the layout and found some holes to be quite interesting. Very nice clubhouse and decent staff.

The course was average to good based on the time of year. They were coming into their overseed season. The greens were somewhat slow and at times inconsistent. The bunkers were also inconsistent in terms of sand fill. .

Based on the price I paid I felt I got a good experience. I would like to return when they are out of the overseed transition and in more lush conditions.

Top Experience

Thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. A real gem!!

Numerous interesting and enjoyable holes along with some great views, The layout can be challenging on some holes but I loved every bit of it. The GPS on the carts is a nice bonus and a must for first timers. FYI, this would be a difficult course to walk with some distance between holes and large elevation changes. Beware the deep pot bunkers.

The course was in great shape and had just opened after over-seed. Greens are a little bit slow but rolling true. They did suffer some damage due to the recent record flash floods but it only affected areas along the cart paths.

Staff were top shelf, from the checkin at the pro shop to the amazingly friendly "Larry" our starter.
The made to order sandwiches at the halfway house were unbelievable. Huge, stacked and delicious!
I played the golds and scored well so I'm sure it influenced my review a little bit but this was probably the best course I've played in the Phoenix area with about 2 dozen under my belt so far. I will return.

Average but could be better

I would say that my experience overall was average.

The weather was great. Got paired up with a couple and another single,. They were all very pleasant.

There is some serious construction going on at the entrance which makes access and parking somewhat challenging. They do try and send carts over to pick you up. If not it is a bit of a hike to the proshop.

Staff were friendly enough. Got a decent deal on Golfnow. They charge for driving range. Should have been included.

I found the course to be at best average condition with some poor spots. In fairness they were getting ready for the overseed changeover but I still found the greens rough with some spots needing serious repair. Bunkers were brutal (no sand - at all), and the fairways were spotty in many places. Layout is pretty good with a few interesting holes.

Pace of play was good and water provided on various holes.

I would hope or imagine they fix things up considerably once they reach primetime pricing. I played 7 rounds in seven days while in the Phoenix area and this was the one round I was not overly impressed with. For the price I paid, it was okay or average.

First time and not the last!

Really enjoyed my first time here. Beautiful weather and got paired up with 3 locals who were a lot of fun. Course had just come out of overseed the day before and was green and lush. Greens were a bit slow and fuzzy but to be expected considering the overseed schedule. I found the layout to be very interesting with many different looks. There were some holes that were challenging but I enjoyed that aspect. Staff were friendly and on top of things at all times. Will return.

Walked

Pleasantly surprised - well worth it.

Played on a very hot 35C . Cold water every 3 holes or so. Course has a very nice layout with very good conditions. Some really beautiful holes. No one was in front of me and finished in under 2.5 hrs walking. I would recommend carts to anyone that doesn't like walking a lot - long distances between holes,

Stephen at the pro shop was top notch. Extremely friendly, courteous and attentive to every detail. He really loves his job and dealing with people. Made my day. Hope your knee is better soon.

Long drive for a subpar experience

Booked as it was a good price and I had never been to the San Tan Valley. It was about a 50 minute drive from Scottsdale but it seemed longer.

I think this could be a very nice course but there were just too many things that hampered the experience. 4hrs 50 min round. Too many twosomes out back to back and just general slow play. Saw a marshal a few times who gave excuses of a very slow foursome somewhere way up ahead. Apparently no one was coaxing them to speed up.

They are in the middle of some sort of transition of switching the order you play the front and back nines which proved very confusing and troublesome. Not only for players but the staff who were equally confused in providing directions on where to start. The signage is very poor on front and back nine starting locations and where to go after finishing some holes. We did a lot of backtracking and running around in circles to find the next hole and/or tee boxes.

They had GPS on the carts that provides distance info only (no map layout) which is fine but it wasn't even close to accurate on many holes. I had a rangefinder that showed the GPS out by dozens of yards on many occasions.

There was cold water available but only at a couple of tee boxes per 9. The carts don't have coolers. The cart girl was working hard and we saw her frequently but there should be water available more often. This type of course design has nowhere to hide from the sun so hydration is very important.

The course conditions were not ideal but MIGHT be better in a couple of weeks. It was just coming out of overseed I believe. The greens were EXTREMELY slow and bumpy. I don't know that I have ever had to putt as hard as that before to reach a cup. Zero roll on the fairway which kills alot of drives. Fresh grass clippings everywhere.

This could be a a nice course in a few weeks in terms of conditions but they really need to pick it on the details, - signage, pace of play, water, GPS, a course guide for some of the blind tee shots, etc...

Not sure that I'll be back anytime soon.

Thank you for taking the time to write an honest and well thought out review. We are currently making changes and will be improving signage soon. In regards to the condition of the greens this is simply do to as you guessed, the fact have recently open from overseeding. In a week or so our greens will be in great shape. I do apologize for the pace of play but when we are cart path only it takes people longer to play. 4:45 minuets is longer than our goal of 4:20 in the winter season. I will be discussing your review with my General Manager and see how we can make improvements to help others have a better experience at our golf course.

Very nice course and a great experience

First time golfing here. I was quite excited to play it based on friends who played previously and commented on it positively.

Got off to a bit of a rocky start as they had some issues with no power carts available initially and being told they were about 20mins behind schedule due to a small tournament that went out a couple of hours earlier. It was a bit chaotic at check-in.

They got us carts just minutes before our tee time which ended up being about 10 mins late. Not a deal killer - just narrating. Got paired up with some real fun golfers which really added to a positive experience. It was their first time as well.

Course was in very good condition. Lush green fairways, decent and fair rough. Greens were also in excellent condition. Not superfast but not too slow either considering they'd just opened after overseeding.

Enjoyed the layout, interesting holes, appealing to the eye, average difficulty and fair. Cart girl came around frequently. Cold water available on every other hole.

I have one complaint. The course was cart path only which I understand and accept just after overseeding. Also, I was aware of this upon booking. The problem was that there in no GPS on the carts and no visual fairway yardage markers on the course. As a first timer - I had no idea where to hit my drives and then had to carry a handful of clubs back and forth due to not knowing the yardage for approach shots. There is yardage on the sprinkler heads but you don't know that until you have already walked halfway across the fairways from your cart.

I have played lots of cart path only but usually you have GPS or some visual indicators at the 250, 200, 150 and 100 yard locations. This helps immensely for both positioning drives and approach shots. Thankfully one of our group had the course layout mapped on his phone so we could get a general idea for our drives, hazards, etc...

Other than that it terrific day of golf.

Glad to see that you review comments and make the effort to respond. Thanks. I will say once again that my experience was mostly positive on your course. I would have hoped, however, that in your response you at least acknowledged my one and only minor complaint about a lack of yardage markers when cart path only and no GPS on the carts; especially for first time players. I see that others have commented on this exact same issue recently as well. Just a thought. Cheers.

Enjoyable, interesting and good value.

First time playing this course. Staff were extremely polite and helpful. Matthew the starter was excellent.

I quite liked this course and the layout. Lots of water but fair throughout. Many interesting and appealing holes. Front 9 was in good shape. Back nine was cart path only which was a bit annoying but understandable as it was fresh from overseed. Lots of fresh grass clippings everywhere from recent mowing.

Not quite ideal but still a very positive experience; especially for the price I paid. I will go back.

Decent experience

Played the Palmer course. The Faldo was in overseed. A very nice track with many interesting holes. Staff were very good and friendly. Good warmup/practice facilities.

The course was not in top shape. I'm guessing they were getting close to oversee. Many rough patches here and there; especially around the greens. The greens themselves were also not ideal as they were quite slow and hairy. I guess that's reflected in the price I paid due to the shoulder season. If I had paid top dollar I would have been quite disappointed.

Play the Faldo course or wait for Palmer to come out of overseed if you are paying top dollar.

Pace was pretty good. 4hrs 15mins.
