Excellent Conditions

I played the Ambassador course for the first time. Without local knowledge, I was at a bit of a disadvantage... particularly distances to hazards.

The Ambassador course is not very long, with many if the par 4 holes being in the 330 to 365 yard range. However, with dog legs, there were holes where you could not hit driver. The Ambassador has very few sand traps, but it has creeks and a pond or two so there are hazards. Additionally, there are many tree lined holes.

The course was in beautiful shape. The tees and greens were as good as I've played in the Berks/Montgomery County area. Employees were working on the course, specifically trimming low hanging tree branches on mature oaks.

Although I played as a single, playing time was still 4 hours, from 11 AM to 3 PM. I played the first 2 holes with no one in front, but from then on I had to wait to hit each shot thereafter. I would have enjoyed the round a little more had I played at a faster rate. They must have been busy earlier in the morning. I will say that I noticed senior players hitting from the forward tees.

Paved cart paths were the norm for the length of every hole. Lines were painted on each cart path to denote distance to the green. 90 degree rule was in effect.

The value using Golf Now was very good.

Better hit it straight

Arrowhead has many mature trees that line the fairways, but they are trimmed so that you are usually able to drive your cart in them to look for your ball.

There are a number of long-ish holes, so be in or near the fairway or you can't make par without a 1-putt. The 248 yard par 3 on the back 9 is tough. Also, there are a number of holes with side hill lies or slopes near the greens, so you need to know where to miss.

The greens were lush, and somewhat slow. They hold fine. You don't need to be afraid give the putt a rap. Traps were okay. Number 9 ends away from the clubhouse, so it's not easily convenient for just 9 holes.

A fine, links style course

First, the greatest difficulty with playing here for the first time was not being sure of the best line to the greens, especially those greens that are unseen. The greens were in great shape despite the hot weather, and they are very large, so if you are on the wrong side of the green, you can have very long, undulating putts. Before playing here, you need to be aware that it is quite hilly and you are most likely to have many side hill lies. The course was well maintained except for the sand traps, most of which were awful due to storms that had created havoc to them the previous two evenings. It looked as if the maintenance staff had done nothing to repair them on the day I was there. All of the pro shop and starter staff were VERY friendly and the Golf Now value was excellent. Two of us played mid-morning, mid-week and finished in a comfortable 4 hours without anyone in front of us.

Greens are the best feature

Despite the really hot weather, the greens were in excellent condition. They were receptive and ran true. The fairways were in good shape too, with distances marked on every sprinkler head in addition to the 200, 150, and 100 disks and lines on cart paths. There are some holes that require 180 yard lay-ups in front of water that can cause problems if you are unsure of distances to the hazards, and a few holes where the ponds are not really visible off the tee and a player unfamiliar with the course may be surprised. A few mostly shaded tee boxes have difficulty growing grass. Only 2 par 5s on this par 70 course.

Beautiful country scenery and fine golf course

Galen Hall is challenging for the average golfer even though the yardage is not obscene. Galen Hall always has had fast greens. 10 feet first putts become 15 feet comebackers. Putted right off the green three times. Fairways and greens were well maintained, but a few tees were shabby with some being worked on with seed planted. Many scenic holes and side hill vistas. Surprised that there were very few golfing mid-morning, mid-week. Hot day and no water available on course, and snack shack was closed at the turn and the soda machine did not accept bills. Overall, the course is one of the best ones in the area.

Reading CC is a great place to play

Tree lined fairways, variety of holes, slope from the whites is 125 so it's a good test of skills, some blind shots on hills, creek running through 7 holes, well maintained throughout, and lightning fast greens with subtle breaks.

A Must Play Golf Course in NE PA

I highly recommend Sugarloaf. The course is very well kept, tee thru green, with fairway, first cut rough, and thicker rough. There is quite a variety of holes, with individually shaped greens that afford difficult pin placements. The scorecard shows 9 possible pin placements for every green, with the day's placement number displayed on the first tee. The quality of the course rivals a private country club. There are a few blind shots where local knowledge would be handy. Slope from the Whites is 120. Although it rained all morning the day I played, the greens were solid and had drained well. With no one ahead of me, I was able to play in 3 hours, 20 minutes. Spectacular views 360 degrees around. Owners and employees were very nice too.
