RiverTowne Country Club
Played On 10/09/2017Worth the play outside of Charleston
Had the pleasure of playing Rivertowne this week. Enjoyable course with some nice views.
The first few fairways were in average (at best) shape; however, quickly improved and stayed in nice shape for the rest of the round.
Overall, the pace of play was good. And, there are five tees to play; however, many of them share the same placement on multiple holes. The fairways weren't too tight and pretty forgiving. Several of the greens were surrounded by marsh, sand, and/or water making it somewhat challenging. Not incredibly challenging, there are a few more challenging holes though. Overall, I played slightly better than my handicap.
Rental sets were pretty nice -- somewhat new Calloway Epic with hybrid irons (4-6).
Overall, I'd recommend the course for anyone in the Charleston area.
The Piedmont Club
Played On 10/07/2017A hidden secret in Northern Virginia
I've had the pleasure of playing Piedmont a few dozen times and have thoroughly enjoyed each time. The course is always in excellent shape (and, much better shape than most other courses in Northern Virginia), more challenging with pretty tight fairways, and very walkable.
While there are a number of very enjoyable, challenging and picturesque holes, I enjoy the par 5 #18 -- one of the nicer holes in Northern Virginia with an approach shot towards the club house, sand in front, and mountain background.
Positives:
-- Always in excellent condition
-- Great pace of play (I've walked in 3h30m and average quicker than a 4h round)
-- More challenging than most in the area
Negatives:
-- Driving range is a few minute golf cart ride away
Overall, I'd highly recommend this golf course to anyone that can get on or any Club Corp member.
Chantilly National Golf & Country Club
Played On 09/08/2017Average private course.
Being so close to home and a Club Corp property, I've played Chantilly National a few times. While the practice facilities and clubhouse are great (the recently renovated clubhouse is impressive), this course is average at-best (relative to a lot of great golf courses in the Northern Virginia area).
There are a couple of great holes with challenging surroundings (water hazards); however, the majority of the holes are average and in sub-par shape for a private course. Specifically, there are many areas throughout the fairways that need significant renovation. And, I wouldn't recommend playing for at least a few days after a mild rain -- this course has one of the worst drainage environments I've seen.
Positives:
-- Few nice holes
-- Excellent clubhouse
-- Walkable
-- Good pace of play
-- Not too difficult of a course
Negative:
-- Awful drainage
-- Much needed fairway renovation
-- Not too difficult of a course
For ClubCorp members looking to try a new course, there are a few local courses that I prefer over Chantilly National. Try River Creek, Piedmont, or Norbeck.
Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club
Played On 08/11/2017One of Northern Virginia's best public courses.
I've had the pleasure of playing Raspberry Falls a handful of times. While I personally prefer to walk when I play golf, which Raspberry Falls is walkable, I've thoroughly enjoyed each and every round at Raspberry.
While the fairways aren't too overly tight, the layout is somewhat challenging with surrounded greens on many holes and very difficult green side bunkers. There are a number of picturesque holes with elevated tees that hit down a couple hundred feet into the fairways with mountain views in the background.
One of, if not the, Northern Virginia's best public courses -- most certainly recommend for any golfer that hasn't had the privilege of playing or anyone looking for a challenging, well maintained and beautiful course.
