Bring your A game

Play the Blues if you are single-digit, otherwise swallow your pride and play the Whites. Postage Stamp-sized greens, narrow fairways, thick second cut, water everywhere and many treacherous sand traps. It's like a miniature Blue Monster at Trump Doal in Florida. LoDs of fun and challenge.

Red or Black, it is like playing in a cow pasture.

Both courses have lousy layouts and suffer from negkect. Bridgeport has no money, and golf courses are low on the priority list.

Cut the greens, please.

The practice putting green was a mess, looks like fungus got to it. Which is too bad because the entire course had very lush greens. So,lush, in fact, that the grass was too long and badly needed cutting (on a Sunday!). Everyone in the foursome was leaving putts three, four feet short all day. And the pin placements were always on the side of a hill, the guy who sets the pins must think he is working at Bethpage Black during the US Open. Anyone who plays Whitney knows that the greens are difficult to begin with as none of them were contoured properly when designed. The rule at Whitney Farms is "if you go long, you are doomed". The sand traps were the best I have seen at any course all year, new fine-granular sand, very nice.

Finally Worth The Hefty Greens Fees

I have never seen the course in such good shape. The only caveat is the sand, which looks great on the surface but twice in the round when my club hit the sand, I disgorged a nylon webbing sitting two inches under the sand. That is why I gave 4 stars rather than 5 on Course Conditions.

Spectacular and Challenging!

Course conditions outstanding. What a challenge this course is, especially from the blue tees. The vibe is just like playing in Florida, the only thing missing is palm trees. I invited some friends to play and they were raving about the course. Highly recommended.

Outstanding - 5 Stars!

One of the best, mif not the best, public courses in CT. Extremely long, and challenging, most go,fears will want to play the white tees. The most intimidating feature is the narrow layout, closely followed by lots of well-placed traps (some of them almost pot-bunker style with high walls). Many fairway traps will also add to your challenge.

Course condition was outstanding. A nice touch is the outdoor BBQ at the 9th tee.

Much Improved

The state of CT pumped $15 million into the course, and extensive course reconstruction began last year and is finally winding down with just work on a couple of tee boxes ongoing. Speaking of the tee boxes, every one of them was rebuilt and laser-leveled. Some have been raised, most notably the first tee which should help scoring as well as pace of play as you could never see the foursome in front and had to rely on a raised mirror-scope before hitting. Lots of work done reshaping and even eliminating sand traps.

This course has had the best conditions of any course in the area (including private clubs) for the past four years or so. The greenskeeper is becoming legendary. Most golfers will want to play from the blue tees as it is a short course and the blues make for far better play off the tees. Nice restaurant veranda for the 19th hole.

A Pete Dye Test of Your Abilities

Any Pete Dye course will be challenging. This one is not as tough as some Dye courses I have played but still long, hilly and challenging. A few of the greens were in need of some TLC due to mold but overall they were good. Fairways outstanding, tees could use some TLC and leveling. Sand traps excellent condition (so overlooked these days) and even though the course was very wet the traps were playable.

Ball marks, Divots and very coarse sand

Early season and very wet after a lot of snow and rain. Most traps were filled with water and those that were not were unplayable not due to the sand being wet but rather due to the sand being basically construction-grade or ever worse very thin with hard dirt underneath.

You would have thought you were playing in the US Open with the crazy pin placements.

The golfers seem to have a hard time replacing divots and fixing their ball marks on the green. One golfer somewhere ahead of us seemed to be taking his frustrations out on the inside edge of the cup, perhaps from slamming the flag back in or something. Ugh. Not the fault of the course, but maybe some signs should be posted reminding players of proper etiquette and their responsibility to leave the course in the same or better condition than when they arrive.

A Casualty - Stay Away

This course must be a money casualty as the conditions are simply horrid. The front nine is at least playable, but the back nine is a disaster and we quit at Hole 15. The layout of the course is lousy as well, with very odd features such as bunkers with enormous wooden walls (!) between you and the green, two-tiered greens with 5-foot elevation changes that are not visible from the fairway, and even giant mounds which obscure the entire fairway placed at 200 yds so good luck finding your ball, lol. Oh and the entire course is under construction as they are apparently building 500 homes on it. LOL. Two thumbs way down.
