Scoonie Golf Club
Played On 07/07/2019Avoid being fleeced at other clubs in area!
Proper old fashioned club. It's a Muni, but one of the oldest clubs in the country, designed by James Braid, and great for holiday golf. I got around in 2.5 hours! Friendly staff, good pint in the clubhouse. When I first started coming to Scotland it was possible to play Turnberry, Crail, Elie, even St Andrews for a reasonable amount, They're now sticking a fork in working golfers, chasing the tourist dollar - a lot of the time the money isn't staying in the area. Support the local reasonably-priced clubs, like Scoonie, shun the ones that charge £100+ per round. They'll soon bring their prices back down!
Elmwood Golf Club
Played On 07/01/2019Really well kept course
As you'd expect for somewhere that's training greenkeepers of the future, the course was in very good condition. A ball on a fairway = a perfect lie. Greens were slowish, but consistent and true. I brought 4 Aussies who were donating their kidneys so they could be fleeced at places like Kingsbarn & Muirfield. They paid less for this round than the fish and chips after the round. Back 9 slightly more'shaped' than front 9, but course will mature nicely.
Oh, and I shot 7 under my handicap so naturally I loved it!
Bicester Golf & Country Club
Played On 08/30/2018Disappointing
I was very disappointed in Bicester.. First, the technology ought to make it possible to see who else is playing. In my case I was slap behind a 17-strong society group - the final group had ZERO sense of ettiquette. The fell well behind the match in front. I waited on almost every shot. Yet still seeing me waiting, they stood on the green, arguing the toss. Taking 10 minutes to look for a ball (which had clearly gone in the water) is unacceptable. There was a course marshal, but he seemed to only be interested in making sure that everyone had paid to play - not in moving people to a decent standard of play.
After taking 4 hours to play 12 holes, I eventually gave up, and skipped ahead to play the 17th and 18th. These two holes typify the stupid course design: stand of tall trees in the middle of the fairways. The 18th green had a huge mound in the middle of it - presumably because that's where they buried the course architect....
The whole resort is all fur coat and no knickers - a spa in the middle of an industrial estate, with the M40 roaring by. I won't be going again.
Minehead & West Somerset Golf Club
Played On 07/26/2018Great course - too many people playing
I took the hot deal on Teeoff times because I thought the time 14.50, suggested it might not be too busy. There were also lots of tee times available around that time - but the club clearly doesn't pay much attention to booked tee-times. After 3.5 hrs, I'd played 12 holes, so I walked off. I know they have a short summer season and have to do what they can to generate revenue, but the pace of play was dreadful. I was playing alone and 4-balls (of which there were many) would not wave me through. I suspect they were not members, but tourists.
Classic links course spoiled by too many people being pushed through.
Leeds Golf Club
Played On 10/26/2016A Mackenzie Gem
I've played Leeds GC a few times, as it's my nearest course. Playing at the end of October, the course was understandably a little muddy in places. But the greens were in exceptional condition, given the time of year. THe staff are always very friendly, and the pace of play is, mercifully, brisk.
After a hohum first few holes, the course opens out with some really interesting holes. The 14th and 15th have steep approaches to the greens, so you need a degree of fitness to keep your score together. Great value - where else can you play a Mackenzie course for £15?
