Great course to play

I love playing Grand Haven and always try to find an excuse to get out here and play. I'm not much of a weekend golfer, so I can't speak for weekends.. but playing on weekdays is very nice and almost always a nice quick pace. The fairways are always in great shape. The only complaint that I have is that sometimes certain holes on the course can get a bit mushy from the rain, if this is a problem for you I wouldn't recommend playing this course after a storm or days worth of rain. The greens are typically in good shape, some days slower than others but nothing to complain home about.

The course is fun to play, many consider this a very difficult course.. which it is but it is certainly playable. If you're not consistent off the tee you will be in a lot of trouble all day. Very rarely will you lose balls, but due to the placement of the trees you're typically left just putting out. It can really hurt your score if you don't keep your drives down the fairway. There is not a lot of room to work with!

I find the layout of the course to be interesting, but not way above average. It's a nice course, and certainly not boring.. but at the same time it is not a course that you remember the amazing characteristics. That being said, I find the par 3s above average.

Some years are better than others in terms of mosquitoes. This year (2014) I haven't had any trouble whatsoever and didn't even bring bug spray. However, it would be a good idea to have bug spray on you just in case there are mosquitoes because if you have to buy it at the course, the prices are absolutely outrageous and it does not last long. You could easily wind up paying 10+ dollars just in bug spray.

One thing I would like to add about this course is the friendliness of the employees. It's not just a typical big smile and talking overly friendly like a waitress at a cheap restaurant, but just cases where they really go out of their way to help you out. One day, my brother took my putter out of my bag without telling me.. I didn't realize it so on hole 1 I had to putt with a driver. The starter ran me out a putter so I could finish out my round correctly. Another day, I was only planning on playing 9 holes but ended up having my best 9 of the year and the guy working stayed late and told me to finish off my round without paying any more money. They really go above and beyond to make you feel welcomed, and this is why I consider them the best course in the Great Grand Rapids/West Michigan area(along with actually being a beautiful course) Many courses act like they are doing you a favor by letting you play on their course.

All in all, course is in great condition, layout/characteristics of the course might be a bit below some of the other top notch courses in the area(yet better than others), staff is unmatched. If you can get a golfnow price at 45 or below it is a GREAT deal and well worth it. Paying the full 65 dollars that they charge outside of golfnow.. I would say play your favorite local course at that price.

Not a place for someone used to nice courses

My brother and I were bored and we grabbed a quick deal on golfnow for 12 bucks a person. We read a few reviews online and they said the course was kept up well so we figured we'd give it a shot.

We should have known, but we got there and there was a line of 20 people waiting to tee off. This course PACKS people on, so we went around to the back 9 and played through. When we got to the front it was exactly the same way so we bit the bullet. It was a very long hit and wait the entire day.

Not to mention every single person on this course was a redneck. They were wearing tshirts, cutoffs, jean shorts, I saw people barefoot. There was a 4 man scramble in front of us... on a 175 yard par 3 it still took 3 shots to REACH the green for them.

The course is not in good condition, unless you are used to playing low quality courses.. then it would be average. The fairways are in poor condition and the greens are absolutely slow.

The staff was friendly and my hamburgers were quite tasty. Was not happy at all that I asked for a coke and was given a Pepsi without being asked. Was a very unpleasant surprise.

This course would be just fine for a non serious golfer looking to go out and drink some beers with his buddies. If you are a pretty serious golfer and are at least used to a well kept course.. don't bother here.

I suppose I should have known better than to come out here considering the area and price... but I just figured I'd put out my review to maybe save someone else the trip.

Favorite course in the Kansas City area

Great course, one of my favorites in the area. Being from Michigan, the bluegrass fairways are great to play... I sometimes get tired of zoysia. Not an overly difficult course, but far from an easy course. Most of the holes have great characteristics and are very fun to play. It's a long drive from Lawrence, so I don't get to play often.. but it's always a treat to play.

Preferred Course in the Area

I really enjoy Eagle Bend, although I was always confused by their prices (probably my fault for never paying attention).

The course is fun to play, and usually in very good shape. There are two public courses in Lawrence, and I really prefer this course over the other (cough cough). I feel like the other course gets a bit more attention and is regarded as a nicer course but I'm not too sure why. I've never had any issues with the conditions of the course and they are actually capable of making a level tee box! I find the course to be on the easier side, not too difficult but still fun to play. If you're in Lawrence and don't feel like driving out to Kansas City, this is a great course to make your home course.

I really like the staff here, they are fair and are not looking to make a quick buck off of you.

Nice Course

I only played this course one time but I really enjoyed it. It was in very nice shape, very green and didn't seem to be affected by the droughts like some of the other courses.

I had one of my worst rounds of the year here, but I cannot take out my frustration on this course because of it! It was a nice course to play and I would easily recommend it to anyone.

Great Course to play

Ironhorse is always my go-to course when I can't decide where I want to play. Kansas City has some great options but I always try to play Ironhorse when I get the chance. The course is always in top notch condition and has some fun holes to play.
