Madera Municipal Golf Course
Played On 07/01/2019Another good day at Madera Municipal GC
Course Condition: today it was good but not great. The sprinklers were on the whole round (teed off at 10:0am). I had to hit a couple shots from the middle of the fairway from muddy grass. Teed off from one tee box through a geyser sprinkler that was on 10 feet in front of me. A little disappointed with the conditions today.
Pace of Play: Wide open holes #1-6. Caught up to a couple groups near the end of first nine. Wide open on the first two holes of back nine but then caught up to groups again. Slow Monday.
Cost: Normally very good price on GolfNow. I wanted to use a gift certificate today so the full price was higher than expected.

For more in depth summary of course see below. This is a quick update on conditions.
Tee boxes- good. The markers were moved back which added 5-10 yards to each hole
Fairways- better but not good yet- just ok.
Rough/off fairway- mostly hard pan dirt
Greens- good

Second time playing this course. This round was better than the first.
Conditions were very nice at this time of year. Tee boxes are good. Fairways are perfect. Not a bad lie when ball is in the short stuff. Rough is rough. Greens are good. Many ball marks but nothing that negatively effects putts.
There's a reason this course is #4 on Golf Advisor list for best layout. This course is so fun to play. Standing on the tee box and deciding where to land tee shots considering traps, rough, shape of fairway, etc is so challenging in a good way. This is not a course where you just hit a straight tee shot, hit an approach, chip or putt, etc. This course requires strategy, club selection, and planning. Definitely the most fun I've had playing golf. Can't wait to come back.

Played On 03/30/2018Hoping it gets better
I play here a couple times a month because it's close to my house. It's easy to get on and the staff is great. I keep hearing a management company has taken over the course but the conditions have not improved.
Multiple times I hit my drive into the fairway only to find the ball resting in dirt. Had to move it to hit off grass. Again, this happens in the middle of the fairway. Same thing around the greens. Patches of weeded grass with tons of dirt spots. A ball 5 feet off the green shouldn't have to travel through clumped patches of grass and dirt.
This course has its challenges without the lack of grass. Tight fairways with large trees over hanging the sides. A ball struck well off the tee and traveling within the fairway may be knocked down by a large limb hanging over the top of fairway. Very small greens.
Hopefully the conditions improve. I enjoy the convenience and staff. But it's not the most rewarding course due to the layout and conditions.
Links Course at Paso Robles
Played On 03/28/2018Unique Course
Played this course for the first time. Upon arrival checked in at clubhouse and got a bucket of balls. Nice staff. Clubhouse is surprisingly spacious for being a light structure. Was given old school gas like cart which was only cart outside of clubhouse. Went down to the driving range and hit a bucket. Nice range. Had to ask someone where 1st tee was. No marker or sign.
As advertised it's a link style course. No trees and pretty flat. Hitting fairways is a must or good chance ball is lost in vineyard or green weeds/hay. Not just errant shots are in danger but balls that just miss fairway. On some holes, because of the layout, it's hard to tell what a good shot will be. I had to rely HEAVILY on my gps app to guide me around. Again, even what could be a good shot, could be lost. Even from tee box, it's very hard to decide where to aim. Blind drives are common.
Most of the greens are huge. Lag putting is a needed skill here. Great for Greens in Regulation but bad for total putts. Course is not very challenging but unique. Conditions are nice when ball is in small fairways. Tough to navigate.
Overall, enjoyable afternoon here. This is a course you probably need to play a lot to be comfortable with.
Madera Municipal Golf Course
Played On 03/03/2018Simply great golf course
I have a handful of courses closer to me but I continue to drive over to Madera Municiple Golf Course to play. It's by far the best value golf in Central California. The course is always in good/great condition and the price is unbeatable. Unmatched value. Summary of today's round:
Arrived early to hit range balls before round. Due to rain and wet conditions, Driving Range was closed. No problem, the gentlemen at the desk told me I could start my round early. Again, due to wet conditions it was walking only. I was told back 9 would allow for cart on path only and I could pick up the cart after 9. Again, no problem as I actually looked forward to the walk. I was the only person out on the course and had a great front 9. Fairways had standing water but there were places to place ball for clean shots. Fairways are starting to get green and the rain the last 3 days will only help. Tee boxes were good too. Greens are firm. Even high approaches barely leave divots. They hold shots... just firm.
Picked up my cart to start #10. Another great 9 and saw a few others out enjoying the wide open course. Weather scared the others away. All around another great day at this course. I didn't stop in today, but the bar/restaraunt is fantastic. Nice workers, great service, and good food. Can't wait to return to Madera soon.
Ridge Creek Dinuba Golf Club
Played On 02/12/2018Nice challenging course
First visit to the course. Started out hitting some balls on the range. Nice facility all around. There are other game improvement areas that I did not take advantage of. Driving range and practice green were very nice. Starter was friendly and introduced me to my playing partner. I planned to play the White tees but was open to playing Blue. My partner recommended Blue based on avoiding certain challenges that would come into play from shorter tees. The Blue tees very very challenging but a bit longer than what I'm used to. No fault of the course as they hey word is challenging. Conditions are nice all around. Fairways are rewarding. Rough is punishing.
Overall, the course is just a bit out of my ability level and I consider myself better than average. Cost of round is pretty high. However, the course is a very nice experience. You get what you pay for here. Very challenging course and first class facilities.
Airways Golf Course
Played On 02/04/2018Pretty Average
I continue to play at Airways. Staff is top notch. Couldn't be better. Friendly and offers good deals. The course is ok right now. I'm hoping conditions improve. There are bare dirt/weed spots in fairways. A good drive is not always rewarded.
The clientele sometimes is an issue as well. Large groups (Five) and a couple instances where a Marshall would be nice even though I understand cost. Last week the group in front of mine was smoking weed and playing music out of a boombox. My two playing partners however couldn't have been more of a pleasure to play a round with.
I'll continue to play Airways because it's my closest course and the cost is low. Hoping the overall experience improves.

The important stuff: greens are nice, fairways are average for municipal course, bunkers are good, tee boxes could use work but are accurate. The course is in good condition overall. The layout is tight fairways, small greens and tricky approach angles. This is my home/closest course so I enjoy it and will continue to play here.
Main issue: recently I have noticed and played through quite a few fivesomes. I always thought foresomes were the max but I'm seeing fivesomes here and while the course isn't overbooked or crazy busy, the larger groups slow down play.
Pacific Grove Golf Links
Played On 01/04/2018Very nice course
Course is located in great area. Not too challenging tee to green. Greens were super tough. I was the first group out and thought they'd play slow. WRONG. Like glass. If you miss the cup your looking at a tough putt to save decent score. I'm a pretty good putter but the speed and rolls were brutal.
Scenery is awesome. Deer, nice trees, and of course the cliffs/waves/ocean.
Hank's Swank Par Three Golf Course
Played On 01/01/2018Could be great but it's real bad
I grew up playing here. I loved the iron and short game work. Unfortunately the conditions are just horrible now. The greens are mostly hard packed dirt with long weeds growing out and mowed. There's no sand in the traps and it's all weeds. Basically the only use of the course is to work on iron distance because once near green there's no reason to keep score due to the conditions.
The people that run the course are very nice. The prices are steep for what you get in return. Range balls are damaged and the course is just unplayable for scoring.

Third time playing here in the last few weeks. Course in very good condition. Great value.
Only complaint would be the scheduling. Backed up a bit then the group in front of us somehow was a FIVEsome.
Madera Municipal Golf Course
Played On 12/19/2017Very good experience in Madera
Course is in great condition. Fairways are mowed down and rough is controlled. Greens are near perfect. Pace was a bit slow but feedback from my group made me believe it was an odd day and usually not backed up.
Overall a very good day. Will be playing Madera GC often.
