Creekside Golf & Country Club
Played On 07/18/2021Great value & challenge
I grew up playing this course. I haven’t played it in a long while and just got back out last weekend. I’ll say it’s still one of my favorite tracks to play.
The course layout is fun and unforgiving. Narrow fairways, slopes and hazards everywhere. The greens were in good shape when we played - rolled true. Definitely soft from the recent rain, which was a blessing given the overall challenge of the course. Pick your spots to use your driver - an iron or hybrid off the tee is often the way to go.
Pace of play was great. We got around in about 3 1/2 hours with a 20 minute delay during some particularly heavy rain.
A few muddy spots here and there, and the sand traps were hard packed and wet.
A lot of the yardage markers are grown over with weeds and grass, which isn’t great to see. The beverage cart was MIA, and that was also a bummer…
Staff were professional and excellent.
Overall, a great value and challenge. I’ll certainly be back. Might have to pack my own drinks though…
Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course
Played On 11/15/2020Fun course, Slow Play
Went out to Van Cortlandt Park for the first time this weekend. It’s a charming and quirky course with a cool history.
First, it’s the middle of fall, so course conditions are what they are. It’s also been pretty wet the past few weeks.Overall, the course was in decent shape. There were some muddy spots on the fairways, and some tee boxes without grass. There’s a mat set up on the first tee, which isn’t ideal. Greens were in pretty good shape! Not patchy and rolled smooth - just slow due to moisture which is what you’d expect and totally fine.
I really enjoyed the layout of some of the holes. There are a few narrow fairways, but more times than not you can be comfortable taking a driver off the tee and letting it fly. The course isn’t too long for mid-handicappers, and has some well protected greens and undulating approach shots which keep things interesting. A healthy mix of hole layouts.
My only complaint is pace of play. They book tee times in 10 minute intervals and work to squeeze as many folks out on the course as possible. Not sure you can expect much else from a municipal course in the city. Expect your round to take ~4 1/2 hours.
All in all, I had a great time. Is it the best course in the area? Nope. Is it great value? Good, not great. Will I go back? Absolutely.
Mosholu Golf Course
Played On 09/12/2020Great place to play a quick 9 holes!
Pleasantly surprised by this golf course!!
I’ve been twice in the past few weeks, and each time I’ve had a great time. The course is short, as you’d expect, and features a few blind shots, elevated greens and cleverly placed bunkers. The rough is lush at the moment - and the second cut around the green is thick enough where you’ve got to be confident with your club choice.
This adds a bit of a challenge and provides a lot of opportunities to work on your short game.
The greens have been in good shape each time! Beyond the occasional pitch mark that hasn’t been repaired, the ball rolls true.
Staff is friendly and courteous. It’s a decent value for the price - a very comfortable atmosphere, great for playing a low pressure 9 with family and friends.
Pace of play is average. Holes are close together, and the average person can walk the course very comfortably.
I’ll definitely be back!!
