Fun Course

Falcon Lakes is a fun links-style course in a neighborhood/farmland setting. The layout is very generous - open fairways with good-sized greens. There are a couple of longer holes out here, but for the most part you will be hitting short irons into the greens due to the amount of roll that these fairways give up. This is definitely a fun track that has the potential to lead to some good rounds.

Serious Potential

I was a bit nervous when I headed to Stone Canyon based on the previous poor reviews that I read. And although the course is not pristine, it was much better than what I was expecting. The Greg Norman design layout is great - generous fairways with a good mix of straightforward holes with holes that require some ingenuity and shotmaking. I played with a couple of guys who have been members out here for a few years, and based on what they said, this course has seen very good as well as very hard times. Apparently there is new ownership that has recently taken over and is giving this course the love that it deserves. This track has some serious potential with some TLC.

Bad Timing, I Guess...

Dub's Dread is a decent course with apparently some pretty impressive historical events having happened here. This is an old-style, tree lined course that lends many non-flat lies and places an emphasis on shot making. I found this course to be OK. What was not OK was that on the day I played, every single tee was moved up to either the farthest front tee box or placed on some sort of temporary tee box that was even farther up. I was not warned of this before heading out and nearly (should have) just called it a day after playing #6 that comes by the clubhouse. I guess for the price it would be a good value if played from the normal tees, but I was just left with a bad taste in my mouth. I would play this course again if asked but won't go out of my way to make it out here again.

We're sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your day. We hope you'll give us another chance so you can enjoy your round with the tee boxes in the regular places.

Cool Layout, Fun Track

Took advantage of an afternoon of excellent weather to go walk 18 at Shoal Creek. I can say that I was thoroughly impressed with nearly every aspect of this course.

To start, the layout is excellent. Mixing short, narrow holes with long, wide ones makes this course a true test of all aspects of your game. Shoal Creek also gives a nice mixture of tree lined holes and more open, plains style holes.

The conditions were about as good as can be expected during this time of year. Everything was a bit soggy, but it didn't take away from the quality of play. The one drawback that I have about the conditions was that the greens seemed to be cut to inconsistent lengths on a few holes, but that was just a very slight takeaway.

Overall, I was very impressed with Shoal Creek. The excellent overall layout mixed with the wonderful conditions (and great weather) made for a great afternoon.

Good Shape for the Time of Year

As a new KC resident, I took advantage of what seemed like the first nice day of the year to try out Swope Memorial. Considering that we were coming off of a few weeks of consistently sub-freezing weather, this course was in better shape than expected. The one real negative that can be said about the course conditions was that many of the bunkers seemed to have been seriously neglected and many were in unplayable condition.

It is easy to tell that this is an older style course as many of its holes meander through hills and present the golfer with anything but flat lies. This is not a long course, playing just under 6300 yards from the tips, but with its tricky lies and elevation changes it is still a good test.

The beauty of the golf course itself will not blow you away, but the scenic downtown KC skyline views that are presented for a few holes make up for this fact.

Overall, this course is a good value, and its ease of access for anyone in Metro KC makes it a worthwhile round.
