Could Be So Much Better

I've played this course 30+ times since the renovation. Absolutely love the course, but some of the policies and amenities are preventing me from providing a positive review.

First and foremost, there's no water coolers on the course. There's a weak water fountain at hole 5. That's it. It's Texas. It gets incredibly hot. This should be considered a safety hazard.

Second, booking policies are terrible. 96 hour cancellation policy is absurd. Especially for a muni. $15 "advanced reservation fee" is also a money grab.

No hole signs on the course? No ball washers? C'mon. If I paid $140 for an out-of-town rate, I'd be mad. Unless you've played the course multiple times, you don't know the routing, the hole shapes, or the yardages. This should be a no-brainer.

It's been cart-path only for 6 months and the staff acts annoyed when inquiring about this. Even though I'm a walker, cart-path-only slows down play. Especially during the summer when nobody wants to walk and it's also incredibly hot out.

If some of these issues were addressed, Memorial would be hands-down my favorite course is the Houston area, period.

Decent track. Rude staff.

Decent track. For the money though, I think there's better options out there.

Where Rockwood really gets negative marks is with it's staff. They act like they simply don't care in the pro shop. On top of that, there's no starter. I shouldn't have been surprised when there were FOUR groups stacked on the 1st tee. This included two fivesomes (on a Saturday afternoon). Lastly, we were finishing up 17 when a Marshall came and told us to wrap things up NOW because there was only 20 minutes of light left. What?! "Yep, they should have told you at the pro shop". More worried about making a happy hour than making sure their golfers gave good experiences.

Great Deal, Great Morning

Got a great deal and played here on a Thursday morning during a vacation in Atlanta.

Didn't feel like the "Jack's Best 18" was gimmicky at all, just fun hole after hole.

Course was in very good shape overall. Greens were fast and true, but lots of divot marks.

Thursday morning so the pace of play was sub 4 hours. Every staff member we interacted with was very pleasant. GPS and entertainment system in the carts were a very nice addition as well.

Would highly recommend!

Great Overall

Very well maintained golf course (almost as nice as Harbour Town) and some very fun / challenging holes. Of course, the postcard-worthy 15th hole certainly adds to the experience.

Pace of play was pretty poor. We waited on every hole from the get-go and finished just over 5 hours.

Wow.

The course was in absolutely pristine shape. The RBC Heritage took place a week earlier, which I'm sure helped.

Our family also received a discount by purchasing a "3-Pack" for all of the three courses at Sea Pines, which definitely helped with the high price tag that accompanies Harbour Town.

Our forecaddie helped, but the other players in our group complained that he didn't work very hard compared to other forecaddies. Regardless, having a forecaddie certainly helps with the pace-of-play.

The course is incredibly difficult, but it's hard not to enjoy playing such a beautiful and well-kept course.

Good Course, Service OK

The course was in fantastic shape and it was a perfect spring day. The closing stretch of holes heading back to the clubhouse were fantastic. Can't I remember any of the other holes, a stark contrast from Harbour Town and Atlantic Dunes.

One of our carts died on 16 and the number on the back of the scorecard wasn't leading to any person as we were told "the clubhouse closes at 7". Also didn't receive much of an apology for the inconvenience.

Decent Course. Really Slow Round and Bad Staff.

We were very excited by the Sunday afternoon twilight deal. That's about where the fun stopped.

Guy in the pro shop had an attitude from the get-go. We paid for a medium bucket, but then he tells us the medium baskets are out and we'll have to wait. Can we use two small buckets? It's the same amount of balls. No, you'll have to wait for more medium buckets. Seven minutes later, still no buckets. Fine, we'll just use a small bucket.

We are at our 2:06 tee time three minutes early, and there's four groups ahead of us. Four! We ask the starter if they're running behind, he say's "no." Two of the groups have five members, he doesn't care. I tell him we are nearly 20 minutes past our tee time, he says we're only 5 minutes past and it's not a big deal. No apology, just a cold "don't care" lie and stare.

We wait for five minutes on every hole. Half of the greens have more un-repaired divots than I can count. We barely finish 18 holes in the dark.

Course was good for what we paid, but staff was absolutely terrible. Really detracted from the experience.

This made me smile because I am not alone. I also encountered those same pro shop guy Jorge I think that Sunday. He hopped in a cart racing after me and made me come back to the clubhouse to pay for my 80 year old Grandma for getting fresh air. There was no starter, but we saw him looking for balls on #2.

I went back one Saturday Morning to find old man Starter guy was buy the carts in the shade and there was no carts for me told me there was one by the tee to hope in?? That made me laugh... But the real laugh was when Jorge came out to remind him they need carts , I asked him if that was his boss?? He told me... yeah they made that jerky treat a manager! I apologized saying
He is why I pre-pay so I don't have to really mess with him. Dude gives me creeper vibes.

Good Muni Option

With Memorial closed for 1-2 years, the timing for Gus Wortham to re-open could not be better. GW means there's still a few options for Houston golfers to play a public track without gouging the pocket.

Granted I never played GW before the renovations, I was certainly impressed with the course conditions. Even though the greens ran fairly slow, there were plenty of undulations and pin placement was very challenging. Fairways were in decent condition as well for playing in the heart of winter.

By far my biggest complaint was the layout. Right off the bat, players are faced with four holes that run parallel to busy roads down the right side of the course. I'm surprised someone from our two groups didn't hit any cars! Holes 2-4 are also all par 5s? On top of this, the course only runs ~6,300 yards from the tips. This all comes back to a funky course design.

All of that being said, the course remained challenging and offered lots of elevation changes, which is rare for Houston.

I'll definitely play again, and hopefully will raise my review to 5 stars once the construction is finished and the clubhouse is renovated.

San Diego At Its Best

I lived in San Diego for 20 years and I can't believe this is the first time that I have played Torrey. Sure, it would have been nice to pay the unbelievably low resident rate, but I would happily pay the non-resident rate again if it meant I got to play another 18.

The weather was perfect (of course!), the turf was immaculate, and the views were spectacular! The greens were challenging and also in great shape.

My biggest complaint was the length of the rough. It was so long and thick that even if you saw where your ball landed, you *maybe* had a 50/50 chance of finding it. Even though I lost a dozen balls or so in this rough, I inadvertently found just as many.

Can't wait to play the south course!

Pleasantly Surprised

My wife, mother, and sister decided to get a massage at Pechanga on Christmas Eve. Fine by me, as I could squeeze a round of golf in.

$64 for a twilight rate? Not too bad. Well, I was in for a nice surprise as this course was right up there with courses that I've paid twice as much for.

Endless beautiful scenery nestled in the shadows of some mountains, Pechanga continued to impress me with a variety of hole layouts and challenges. This is definitely a course to map out your shots in advance.

Mountain tops, canyons, running streams, wildlife, and a beautiful background make this course memorable.

My only complaint would be the pace of play. Every hole I had to wait on the foursome in front of me to tee off, but apparently they had to do the same. Oh well, it's Christmas Eve, right?

Looking forward to playing here again.

Stunning!

Quirky? Maybe a little. But That easily gets overshadowed by the breathtaking views and immaculate course conditions. Even though we played in July, the course appeared to be in championship conditions and had some of the nicest turf I've ever played on. Bring your camera with you because there will be plenty of pictures you'll want to take!

We played three times while in Cabo, all at similarly priced and ranked courses. Quivira staff was just as friendly as the others, but by far the most memorable.

Your cart has GPS, there are plenty of signs everwhere, and some of the long drives have some of the best views Cabo. I have no idea how you could rank this course anything other than five stars.

Excellent Course with a Few Flaws

We played Palmilla, Quivira, and Puerto Los Cabos during our stay. All three courses are Nicklaus designed. Palmilla had the best and friendliest service BY FAR of the three courses and is what I will remember the most. Even though it was July, course conditions were decent(not great) but still not as good as the other two.

The cool towels provided at the driving range, the turn, by the cart girl were much welcomed.

We enjoyed playing the Mountain course more than the Ocean course, sans the hole that leads right up to the water.

Why four stars? Palmilla is a well-run and challenging golf course, but compared to the other two courses (which cost roughly the same) we just didn't leave with the same "wow" factor. The other two courses were in better conditions, had better views, and offered complimentary food and drinks between holes.

Without a doubt 100% deserving of 5 stars. The Norman front 9 was incredibly fun. The par 4 fifth hole, par 3 sixth hole and subsequent hole seven are possibly the three coolest string of holes I've ever played.

Additionally, the food and drink at the rest stations were fantastic!

My only complaint is that the Nicklaus II course didn't seem to have a signature hole, or really come close to matching the excitement of the Norman front 9.

Would still recommend to any serious golfer in Los Cabos as an absolute must.

Would rather play highlands

There's no other golf course like this in the greater Houston area. Built on top of a landfill, Wildcat Lakes provides some great elevation changes that you simply won't find at other courses. Compared to its sister course, Wildcat Highlands, it is just as well-maintained and challenging. That being said, I have no idea why Lakes' tee rates are a premium. Highlands offers spectacular views and has some similar elevation changes.

It's fun to change things up and play Lakes every now and then, but save some money have just as much fun playing Highlands.

La Quinta

Great twilight value at La Quinta.

Pace of play was tough, as there were two fivesomes in front of us. We ended up skipping two holes and it was clear sailing from there.

Course was long and in good condition. The raised greens were unique for the area and fun to play.

Definitely looking to coming back and to trying El Dorado!

Great Twilight Round

Twilight rate started at three and got to enjoy some great Texas golf weather in October.

Staff in the clubhouse were neither friendly or unfriendly.

The course was in fantastic condition on all 18. Definitely on the nicer side for the amount I paid for a round. The course didn't play too long (6900 yards from the tips), but the greens were pretty challenging. The pace of play was decent enough.

My only gripe is the amount of construction going on next to the course. I realize that this isn't the course's problem, but it certainly isn't desirable to play 4-5 holes next to an army of construction workers using jackhammers and bulldozers. This won't stop me from coming back.

History and Charm

From the moment you pull into the parking lot, you can feel the history and charm of Brackenridge.

My fiancé and I were continually impressed by the course conditions given that this is a muni course. Although a short course, Brack is definitely challenging. The fairways are narrow and the bunkers are strategically located. It was also nice that the golf cart had a laser rangefinder!

The biggest con for us was the pace of play. We started exactly on time and as the group in front of us was finishing the first hole, but there were two groups stacked up by the time we got to hole 3. Not wanting to play a 5.5+ hour round, we skipped 7-9 and headed to 10 where it was wide open.

Besides for the pace of play and the lack of a driving range, I would highly reccomen Brack. But, we also got a 50% off GolfNow deal. $75 per person is steep.

Not in Houston Anymore

This is one of the only courses in/around Houston that has actual hills. Considering it's August in Texas, we knew we were going to have blistering heat, but that didn't stop us from really enjoying our round.

Pros: Pace of play was great. Course was in pretty good condition.

Cons: The practice range was the worst I've seen it in years. We played 18 holes and no beverage cart service! I've never experienced this before.

Nice Slice of Tahoe

Overall, we had a great round. Course was in fantastic condition, the weather was perfect, and the facilities were very nice.

My only two complaints were that some of the staff weren't pretty cold (maybe because we aren't members?) and the mix of fast walkers + carts + slow walkers caused some pace-of-play issues.

Even though we still had a great time, we had a better overall experience at neighboring Old Greenwood for the same price. If we are back in the area, it won't be a hard choice which course we'll be heading to first.
