RTJ Golf Trail at Ross Bridge - Top 3 Course I've Played

The Good: Ross Bridge is the flagship golf course of the 11-site Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama and for good reason. It is as impressive in scale of an inland public course as I've played. Fantastic, well-conditioned design has a "poorer" man's Augusta feel with ample, huge fairways and super white sand traps. From the first hole you know you're in for a treat and the design consists of one of the best quartet's of Par 5's I've come across. Great variety in Par 4's and a couple strong Par 3's. Awesome clubhouse includes beautiful dining area, well-stocked pro shop, and expansive banquet and hotel accommodations. Top-notch practice facility and great service/amenities from check-in to the 19th hole. GPS on the carts is a nice bonus. Good value considering the $150 price tag and off-season and twilight rates are great.

The Bad: The green complex conditions were a little disappointing considering the quality of course. The Par 3's are really good but not as memorable as the other holes. Pace of play can be a little bit of an issue.

The Verdict: Ross Bridge is as visually spectacular a course I've played and ranks in my Top 3 golf experiences I've had in my life. A top tier facility in every way. It's a travesty that its not ranked higher by major golf publications.

The Best Hole: The Par 5 1st is one of the best opening holes I've ever played and sets the tone for an unforgettable round.

RTJ Oxmoor Valley (Valley) - Fun, Fair Sibling to Ridge

The Good: The Valley course at RTJ Oxmoor Valley is a nice change of pace to the tough, rugged Ridge course. Starting off with a huge downhill tee shot to a wide fairway, golfers can take a deep breath and enjoy the scenery. Good variety of dogleg Par 4's and some great Par 5's, especially on the closing nine. Nice clubhouse supports all 54 holes and includes a dining area and large pro shop. Good practice facility, especially the amphitheater driving range that is a glimmer of what's to come. Really good value with rates under $80 during peak season.

The Bad: Green complexes could be in better shape. Par 3's are forgettable. Carts lack GPS. The clubhouse restaurant closes in the afternoon and doesn't serve dinner. Our golf trip group found this to be a glaring inconvenience.

The Verdict: While not as interesting a design as the Ridge, The Valley course is a more relaxing, fair test of golf for all skill levels. A great "second day" course for those partaking in a golf marathon.

Best Hole: The short Par 5 12th is a great hole that requires a drive over water. Depending on how much of the dogleg is chewed, a "go for broke" approach must avoid water again!

RTJ Oxmoor Valley (Ridge) - Best Course of the 54 Hole Complex

The Good: Oxmoor Valley is one of the first RTJ sites, built around a former US Steel mining area and you can sense the "quarry" feel on the Ridge course. Significant elevation changes and rugged terrain is the course's trademarks, with severely sloped fairways and extreme green undulation. Good course conditions and slick greens. Fun variety of Par 4's, one excellent Par 5 in particular, and a good group of Par 3's. Nice clubhouse supports all 54 holes and includes a dining area and large pro shop. Good practice facility, especially the amphitheater driving range that is a glimmer of what's to come. One of the better value courses I've played in a long time with rates under $80 during peak season.

The Bad: Green complexes could be in better shape. Carts lack GPS and the yardage markers are lacking. The course rarely has an even lie which can be difficult for the high handicapper. The clubhouse restaurant closes in the afternoon and doesn't serve dinner. Our golf trip group found this to be a glaring inconvenience.

The Verdict: The Ridge is the strongest of the two regulation courses at Oxmoor Valley and a unique golf course in the Birmingham area. Fun, very challenging and favors the fade!

Best Hole: The Par 5 3rd is the most demanding hole on the course and is the best of the 54 holes at the Oxmoor Valley complex. Requires three great shots and an approach to a green atop a huge rock cropping.

FarmLinks at Pursell Farms - True Alabama Hidden Gem

The Good: Pursell Farms is an incredible 3,500 acre facility about an hour southeast of Birmingham. The resort centers around FarmLinks, the 18-hole Hurdzan/Fry golf course that is one of their best public designs in the US. Rugged track with severe elevation, yet extremely fair, this course has some of the most fun Par 5's, strong Par 5's (particularly on the front half), and a Top 3 best foursome of Par 3's that I've ever played. Great course conditions and good, large greens that only have slight undulation. Nice clubhouse that has a small dining area, while there is an extremely nice resort area that has multiple restaurants and lodging options. One of the better driving ranges you'll find at a public course. Excellent staff and great value considering the quality of course.

The Bad: Greens were a little slow and the surrounding complexes weren't in great shape, mostly impacted by a tough winter. Overall the design is fantastic, but some of the Par 4's on the back nine tend to blend in or are too similar. Course had us tee-off on the back nine which was odd.

The Verdict: One of the best hidden gem courses in the country. Undoubtedly should get consideration for Top 100 public lists and worthy of high Alabama state rankings. One of the most fun, fair courses you will ever play.

Best Hole: The Par 3 5th has one of the biggest drops from tee-to-green that I've played. Unfortunately I didn't take enough club...twice.

University Park CC (Holes 1-18)

The Good: Beautiful semi-private country club complex near the airport is dubbed as "The Best of Sarasota Golf" and the course doesn't disappoint. Has a Magnolia Lane feel as you drive into the complex with huge parkland style trees for a Floridian course. Ron Garl design is 27-hole complex (played holes 1-18) has plenty of room off the tee but challenging approach shots. Superb Par 5's, good variety in Par 4's, and solid Par 3's (particularly on the opening nine). Very nice course conditions and excellent greens that can pose reach problems if not on your game. Fantastic off-course amenities includes beautiful clubhouse, nice driving range and separate restaurant facility (although only open to non-members on certain day/times). On-course staff is very accommodating. While within a large residential community, you never feel like you're playing within a bunch of condos. Good value for overall quality of course and country club-esque experience (especially if after 11am).

The Bad: No GPS is a bummer given the price tag. Some of the Par 4's have awkward driving angles due to large sentinel or overhanging trees. While I didn't personally experience, several members of my total group felt the staff acted as though as non-members we were a nuisance and the members were snobbish. Pace of play was a serious issue for an afternoon weekday round.

The Verdict: A unique, beautiful parkland style course in western Florida is arguably the best course in the Sarasota/Bradenton area. If it weren't for being treated like outcasts, would recommend even higher.

Best Hole: Of the 1-18 holes, the medium length Par 4 9th has a peninsula green approach that is tough!

Waterlefe Golf & River Club

The Good: Waterlefe is an interesting Ted McAnlis design in the Bradenton area just outside of Sarasota. Devoid of houses is a huge plus, the course routes through wetlands on literally every hole but has enough trees and sand to hold its own even if you manage to keep it dry. Very strong Par 5's and good variety in Par 4 with several doglegs. Par 3's are extremely difficult but visually appealing. Well-conditioned fairways and very large, smooth greens that don't have too much undulation. Nice clubhouse and above average putting green. Pace of play for a fivesome was excellent (under 4 hours). Starter and clubhouse staff were very accommodating. Great GPS on the carts!

The Bad: Seems odd to be hitting into a pond for the driving range at such an expensive course: perhaps its just foreshadowing for whats to come. While off-course service was friendly, the ranger was extremely pushy despite our great pace as a fivesome and there was no on-course beverage service to speak of. Course design provided very little options off the tee, particularly the medium length Par 4's. The Par 3's were overly long, difficult for the tees that we played. Overpriced for the quality of course and service received.

The Verdict: Waterlefe is a good, yet uninspiring option in the Sarasota area. Lacks a "wow-factor" set of holes. I found myself saying multiple times "This isn't a hundred dollar golf course."

Best Hole: The dogleg left Par 4 13th is one of the few holes with ample room off the tee and an approach that must cross a creek and avoid overhanging palm trees.

Heather Ridge Golf Course

The Good: Heather Ridge is a nice little 9-hole course that is set among a large residential and condo development near Six Flags Great America. Par 35 layout has good combination of fair (opening hole is a sub-300-yard straight away Par 4) and challenging (several doglegs around ponds) holes that serves as a good tune up or leisure round. The lone Par 5 was a very strong hole with a series of traps left and water right on tee shot. Another pond left must be navigated if going for two. Good course conditions considering it is mid-march. Clubhouse is pedestrian at best but does not a banquet area and some decent apparel / equipment. I was one of only two players on the course at Noon, so pace of play was excellent!

The Bad: Greens were very shaggy, but this is expected given the early spring shoulder season. Staff was nice but didn't provide much value other than taking my Groupgolfer.com voucher. No driving range and very small putting green. The Par 3's are fairly forgettable compared to the other holes on the course. Cost to walk 9 holes ($18) was a little higher than expected considering the quality of course and time of season.

The Verdict: Heather Ridge is a fun little course if you have 2 hours to spare or combine with a round at the superior Bittersweet nearby. Enough quirk and challenge for the avid golfer, yet easy enough with limited green undulation for novice / junior golfers to enjoy.

Best Hole: The long Par 4 2nd is a really solid hole. A tough drive must avoid water right and approach to one of the more undulating greens on the course.

Grand Geneva Resort (The Highlands)

The Good: Fun Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye collaboration is the second course built at Grand Geneva Resort. Wide open fairways provide the opportunity to keep the ball in play, but small, lightning quick greens protects The Highlands. Good course conditions, very nice off-course amenities, and excellent practice facility. Excellent Par 3's and some good risk/reward Par 5's. Most of the Par 4's have a "go for broke" opportunity off the tee, making for an enjoyable resort experience. Several holes have some great elevation change for a course in southern Wisconsin.

The Bad: Overpriced at $130 during high season. The Highlands is a $75 track that disguises itself as a premium resort course. Some holes are beautiful while others seem lackluster. Several tee boxes are uneven. Greens are almost too fast for the resort golfer.

The Verdict: The Highlands is the little sister to The Brute and for a reason. While it does offer great greens and a playable layout, there are only a few holes that justify the hefty greens fee. Nonetheless, there aren't too many more beautiful walks in the park in Southern Wisconsin.

Best Hole: The Par 3's #4 and #12 are great, but the downhill Par 4 #14 offers the best photo of the course. A downhill tee shot to a well-guarded uphill green.

Wilmette Golf Club

The Good: Completely redesigned after a tragic fire ravaged the course years ago, this Greg Martin track is a fun, sporty course with tough driving lanes and small, undulated greens. Par 4 variety is strong with several doglegs to either side and demanding closing holes. Course is in good shape and greens hold fairly well. Clubhouse is nice with full restaurant and bar. Practice facility includes short game area and small driving range. Good value for quality of course and pace of play.

The Bad: No GPS on carts and very limited yardage markers on the course. On-course service is barely existent during the weekend mornings. Driving range is pedestrian, even for a park district course. Par 5's & Par 3's are unmemorable.

The Verdict: Wilmette GC is another good, but not great, option on the north shore. An improving park district course with no fancy flashes, but just a fun walk in the park.

Best Hole: #11 is the best Par 4 on the course. A demanding drive must avoid water left and sand right to a green guarded by a pond.

A couple of factual corrections from someone that plays the course regularly:
1. The "fire" is unrelated to the course. The clubhouse burned over 10 years ago and was replaced by a very nice facility--pro shop, restuarant/bar looking down 18th fairway.
2. The course got an extensive renovation 2013/14--improved drainage, USGA std greens , and significant upgrade in design.
3. If btweed1683 the course in 2017, he/she would have ridden in brand new, GPS equipped carts. The Wilmette Park District replace their entire fleet of carts at the start of the 2017 season.

I take no real exception with the qualitative review. The course through the 2017 season is still dealing with marginal fairways resulting from flooding and subsequent die-off of poa grass.

Foxford Hills Golf Club

The Good: Very nice, upscale layout in Northwest Chicago suburbs is a compilation of links and woodlands engulfed with interesting bunkering. Great Par 5's, including the superb #15, as well as strong Par 3's that require precision. Fair amount of elevation change for an Illinois track. Good course conditions and large greens that run pretty smooth. Good clubhouse, nice on-course amenities, and very strong practice facility. Exceptional staff that will make sure you enjoy your day, especially the starter and rangers. Lots of fairway yardage markers is a plus.

The Bad: No GPS is a bummer. Bunker complexes are visually stunning, but a little thin. Greens are fairly slow and don't hold very well. Good value with coupons or twilight rates, but at $80-$85 peak season, a little steep.

The Verdict: Foxford Hills is a fun golf course that provides ample room of the tee but difficult bunkers and greens that will challenge any player. One of the better public municipal courses in the northwest suburbs. Play it during off-peak or twilight and its a steal for the area.

Best Hole: Without question, the Par 5 15th is one of the best holes in all of Illinois. A downhill tee shot to an approach over a stoned pond to a thin, long green. Just an absolutely beautiful hole.

Erin Hills Golf Club

The Good: This Hurdzan/Fry design about 35 miles northwest of Milwaukee is one of the most expansive golf canvases you will ever see. Incredible, rugged design is visually terrifying but very playable for mid and high handicappers. Excellent variety in Par 4's with good mixture of doglegs and blind tee shots. Par 5's, especially the closing hole, are very impressive. US Open caliber conditioning and challenging, undulating greens that putt perfectly. The clubhouse and newer overnight lodging options are absolutely top-notch and as elegant as any private club. Great practice facilities and super staff that will ensure you have an experience of a lifetime. Top-notch caddies that work their tail off walking 10+ miles so you can enjoy the round.

The Bad: Other than the huge price tag and the remote location, there is nothing else to gripe about the Erin Hills experience. The Par 3 9th is excellent, but the other Par 3's are fairly unmemorable compared to the other holes on the course.

The Verdict: Erin Hills is one of the best inland public courses in the Midwest, if not the entire country. Hard to imagine spending $400+ at a non-ocean course, but you'll quickly forget the cost with this bucket list masterpiece. Everything is first class.

Best Hole: All of the Par 5's are excellent, but the closing brute is a wonderful cap to an unforgettable round.

Golf Courses of Lawsonia (Woodlands)

The Good: Lawsonia's sister course to the Links is no slouch, with one of the prettiest layouts in all of central Wisconsin. The Woodlands is appropriately named, with huge trees all over but enough room off the tee to navigate fairly. Fantastic foursome of Par 3's, excellent variety in Par 4's, and some of the most challenging Par 5's that you will ever play. Good fairway and rough conditions, along with smallish, tough greens that putt true. Fantastic, friendly staff will do all they can to make your experience memorable. Clubhouse duals as a rustic restaurant and bar that has some great local grub and flair. Great value, especially when you take advantage of the All-Day-Play package.

The Bad: The sand trap conditions were absolutely an embarrassment for such a high caliber course. Many traps were even considered ground under repair. Limited practice facility with only average putting green and driving range that is uphill with no targets. No GPS and limited on-course amenities.

The Verdict: The Woodlands course is a Top 10 layout in Wisconsin but with only adequate conditioning. Despite the sand woes, a blast to play and great companion to the better known Links course.

Best Hole: Most will side with one of the downhill Par 3's or tough Par 5's, but for me the best hole was the dogleg right Par 4 #5 with great views of Green Lake in the distance and several beautiful lake homes behind the green. Awesome!

Golf Courses of Lawsonia (Links)

The Good: The Links course at Lawsonia is one of the most official "Old School" designs in midwestern public golf. Designed by the great William B. Langford in the 1920's, this track has some of the most challenging green complexes and unique sightlines off the tee that you'll see at any course, anywhere. Design includes an excellent grouping of Par 5's and Par 3's, most notably the #7 Boxcar hole with one of the most severe green fall-offs you'll find. Excellent course conditions, particularly the severely undulated greens that are very fast and challenging. Fantastic, friendly staff will do all they can to make your experience memorable. Clubhouse duals as a rustic restaurant and bar that has some great local grub and flair. Great value, especially when you take advantage of the All-Day-Play package.

The Bad: Much like its companion course, the Woodlands, the sand traps were a little thin. The practice facilities are to be desired with only a decent putting green and an uphill driving range with no targets. No GPS on the carts and limited on-course amenities.

The Verdict: The Links course is one of the most unique public courses in the Midwest. A true Scottish feeling without the adjacent body of water. Top 8-10 public course in Wisconsin.

Best Hole: The Par 5 13th would be on this list, but the beautiful bordering trees that engulfed the hole were all removed. The Boxcar hole remains the signature hole of the entire complex.

Lake Arrowhead Golf Club (Lakes)

The Good: Lake Arrowhead (and particularly the Lakes course) is an unheralded, relatively unknown 36-hole complex about 5 minutes from the new Sand Valley. Tight, tree-lined parkland layout by designer Ken Killian has his staple visually impressive sand traps, tons of water, and subtle greens that are fair for all levels of player. Course is in top-notch shape and has a nice driving range and putting green. Nice staff and excellent pace of play. Good value given quality of course and conditioning. Very strong Par 5's.

The Bad: Overall amenities are average at best with a small clubhouse and pro shop. No GPS on carts is a bummer, especially with so many forced carries and water. On-course service, albeit in the morning, was non-existent until the final hole.

The Verdict: The Lakes course at Lake Arrowhead is a fun, nice surprise of a golf course that will hopefully get more play with nearby visitors at Sand Valley. Great place to stop off if you want have a quick, nice stroll through the woods!

Best Hole: The short Par 5 #12 is quintessential risk-reward. A drive must avoid two water hazards and then a decision must be made to go for a green guarded by water and tons of sand.

SentryWorld Golf Club

The Good: One of the true hidden gems in Midwestern public golf, SentryWorld went through a complete renovation of the original Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design in 2014 and it became an even better course because of it. Has an Augusta feel to it with large, beautiful white sand traps and tons of flowers scattered throughout the course. It's not only pretty, but very fun with great mixture in demanding Par 4's and risk-reward Par 5's, as well as the signature Par #16 Flower Hole. Superb fairway conditions and very nice greens that have enough undulation for the advanced golfer. Very nice driving range and practice facilities. One of the most impressive clubhouses for a public course I've seen, with indoor tennis courts, excellent pro shop and a very nice restaurant with full bar and private party rooms. Good value considering quality of course and service. GPS on carts is another upscale touch.

The Bad: No significant issues, but to nitpick, the Par 4's are mostly straight away and wish there were a few more doglegs. Only missing piece is stay & play lodging option.

The Verdict: SentryWorld is one of the most complete public facilities in all the Midwest. A true first-class complex and a very fun, superbly conditioned golf course. Well worth the drive when visiting Sand Valley, Kohler, Lawsonia, etc.

Best Hole: Everyone raves about the Flower Hole, but the dogleg left Par 5 #5 is a great hole. Drive can bite off fairway and then approach must avoid an overhanging sentinel trees.

Sand Valley Golf Resort (Mammoth Dunes - Preview)

The Good: David McLay-Kidd is in the process of constructing the flagship masterpiece at Sand Valley Golf Resort, Mike Keiser's budding golf resort in the middle of nowhere Wisconsin. Even more expansive in scale compared to Coore & Crenshaw's Sand Valley course, Mammoth Dunes provided preview play for Holes 1-5 & 15-18. The course is engulfed in sand dunes that make it seem like you're on another continent. Excellent variety in Par 4 hole design with good mixture of doglegs and elevation change. Excellent Par 5's that are risk-reward depending the tees you play. Par 3 16th in particular is a masterpiece downhill shot over the largest dune on the course (thus far). Fabulous views of the closing holes from the brand new clubhouse. Great service and friendly staff.

The Bad: No yardage markers yet, but this is typical for a course in preview play stage. The greens are almost TOO large and could lead to a lot of time spent putting. May be a tough hike for those that don't walk many golf courses.

The Verdict: Mammoth Dunes is well on its way to be one of the best public golf courses in the Midwest. A playable, fun experience and can't wait to see the final 9 holes!

Sand Valley Golf Resort (Sand Valley)

The Good: Mike Keiser's "Bandon Dunes of the Midwest" is a majestic sand dunes restoration project in addition to a budding golf resort. The Coore & Crenshaw course is a rugged, sandy masterpiece of playable, yet intimidating golf that gives golfers plenty of options and challenges along the way. Fabulously conditioned despite being in its infancy and huge, large greens that already putt true. The layout is fair with huge fairways and a strong variety of tough holes sprinkled with short Par 3's and drivable Par 4's to improve your confidence. Practice facility is excellent with full driving range and putting green that connects to first tee. Superb service in place with full caddie program and friendly staff. First class clubhouse with extremely nice restaurant and bar, as well as awesome pro shop.

The Bad: Sand and waste area conditions are only course detractor as they need continued improvements as the resort matures. Greens could use another season or two to mature and hold shots better. Perhaps a little overpriced at $200+ for a new resort.

The Verdict: Sand Valley is well on its way to being a Top 3 Wisconsin course and one of the best resort courses in the Midwest. An extremely fun, playable track that will only get better with time. A truly memorable golfing experience that will only get better with age.

Best Hole(s): Each nine closes with fantastic holes: #9 is an excellent short Par 4 that demands precision an the closing #18 is an uphill, beautiful Par 5 that caps a religious golfing adventure.

Bonnie Brook Golf Course

The Good: Decent park district course near the IL/WI border is well conditioned and staff that provides a nice, casual atmosphere. Old school parkland design has good variety of long and short Par 4's, risk-reward Par 5's, and challenging Par 3's. Small, challenging greens can be very slick. Nice clubhouse with banquet area and small restaurant area and bar. Pretty good value for seniors and juniors during the week.

The Bad: Poor practice facilities includes driving range that can only include irons. No short game practice area. Several holes require a long carry over water that isn't realistic for most weekend golfers. Overpriced for quality of course compared to other options (Bittersweet & Shepherd's Crook) in the area.

The Verdict: Bonnie Brook is a fun little municipal track that doesn't have the upscale amenities or practice facilities, but the staff makes up for it.

Best Hole: The short Par 4 #12 requires strategy off the tee with multiple creeks to carry and requires an approach to a small, undulating green.

The Good: Very nice, upscale Arthur Hills layout about an hour northwest of Chicago is one of the premier suburban public tracks. Tree-lined, but very fair layout puts a premium on strategic shotmaking and putting. Impressive course conditions and outstanding, difficult greens. Good Par 5's and extremely challenging Par 3's. Nice clubhouse with full restaurant and locker rooms, as well as a strong practice facility. Priced steeply at just under $100 during peak season, but many online specials and twilight rates.

The Bad: While a great course, not sure its worth nearly a Benjamin to play. Lack of GPS or on-course restrooms is a bit of a letdown. Most holes are great, but a few of the Par 4's are unmemorable.

The Verdict: Stonewall Orchard is a top 10 public access course in Illinois and is one of the best conditioned courses in the state. Some of the most treacherous greens you will find!

Best Hole: The Par 5 18th is a beast. At nearly 600 yards, you can expect a mid-short iron third approach to a small, devilish green protected by water left and sand right.

Shepherd's Creek Golf Course

The Good: Extremely well-conditioned Keith Foster (of Iowa's The Harvester fame) park district track just south of the Wisconsin border is arguably the best value in the North Shore area. Links style layout is relatively flat off the tee but the true challenge is around the incredibly undulating greens. Most holes are very open with strategic bunkering and water hazards. Nice variety in Par 4's and long, challenging Par 5's. Good clubhouse with full restaurant and bar. Staff is supportive and friendly. Pace of play is good for a public track of its caliber.

The Bad: Lack of driving range or short game area is a huge bummer for overall quality of facilities. The greens can be bumpy and overbearing for the average 15-20 handicapper. Some blind shots from the tee are a little annoying unless you play there often. Benign, forgettable Par 3's on the closing nine. When the wind blows, this place is a bear!

The Verdict: Sans the lack of practice facilities, Shepherd's Crook is a solid, complete golf experience and arguably the best $50 you can spend in all of Chicago. Just a very fun place to play 18 holes of golf.

Best Hole(s): The tree-lined Par 4 5th is a brute. A demanding tee shot must find its way between a forest of trees and a downhill approach to a long, thin green. The short, uphill Par 3 #8 has an amphitheater of trees that makes it beautiful.
