Better than average for North Alabama

In general, the course is in very good condition. The greens are slow and rather hard, but cutting them low would likely generate maintenance issues.

One criticism would be the length of grass in the fairways. It was long enough to have a significant affect on drives.

Like the other State Park course in the area, the carts need to be replaced because they have not been maintained.

Best condition in years

Aside from many bare spots (mostly off the fairways) around the course, the course is in really good condition. The fairways have filled in and you can now play the ball down vs looking for patches of grass to hit off. If more knuckleheads would repair ball marks, there would be no complaints about the greens- they're moderate speed and will hold a well struck shot.

Barry and staff are the best! If I owned a golf course, I'd ask Barry to manage it for me.

Very very bad condition

I've played this course many times since it's so close to my home.

As the spring progressed, the course condition has become worse. In early spring, I was impressed with how the greens looked- but now: The greens are close to unplayable. #1 green had grooves left by equipment which made it impossible to keep a put on line. Some of the greens are like rocks- so hard that even a well struck ball will not hold. The grass on #11 is gone because that's a low, shaded spot. All of the greens were shaggy- not even well struck putts would hold line and get to the hole.

I've never seen these fairways in above average condition. They continue to have many bare spots and uneven patches. The only way to get a decent lie is to roll the ball to a good patch of grass :(.

I'll likely not be back at Fox Run until I see some reviews that indicate the course has improved. Today's value was one of the worst I've ever experienced- which is my loss because there's only one other course in close proximity.

Worth the one hour drive!

TP is in the best shape of any course the public can play in the Huntsville area. The greens, which were a tad firm, are smooth and the fairways provide nice lies. You can find and hit shots which end up in the rough. We played the gold tees, and the slope rating (114) seems just a tad low because there are some real challenges on the back 9.

Word of caution on the par 5 9th hole: This hole is reachable in 2, but If you pull your second shot left, it will likely kick left OB and roll across the street.

The staff was extremely nice- if I lived in Cullman, I'd join this club.

One of best courses in area

Greens are in great condition. Fairways need another month or so to fill out- they are a bit thin this time of year. Rough is short enough to find and hit errant shots. The traps need some attention because the sand is real thin in some areas and some traps don't drain real well- but they have improved significantly from the winter months.

The staff is perfect! They are the most friendly staff in North Alabama and treat the public as well as their members.

My annual golf ego check

The course is in excellent condition, but some of the fairways still showed the affects of recent hard rain. Greens were a bit slow, but in great condition. The staff was really nice and accommodating. Don't expect to play to your handicap on this course- it's tough!

Unfriendly, uncooperative, and over officious

While this is not the first time I've been treated badly as a result of booking a tee time through GolfNow, it was the most severe discrimination I've ever experienced.

We we lectured on how the course did not see a penny of the GolfNow booking fee. Although there was nobody scheduled to tee off and there were very few players on the course, we were denied the opportunity to tee off a little early unless we paid for a new tee time at the course.

A member of our group overheard the employee at the counter telling a GolfNow customer that he could deny the player the right to play since he was 2 minutes late for check in.

We played the front nine in 1 hour 10 minutes. On hole #12 we ran into a foursome (the only other golfers we saw on the course) who declined to let us play through. It took 2 1/2 hours to play the last 6 holes.

Even the upscale courses in Alabama are super friendly to GolfNow customers, so it is very perplexing that the employees of a State run course are so blatantly hostile and officious toward us.

I would not play this course again even if it was free.

Great layout

Generous fairways and playable rough. Most wayward shots can be found and advanced. Watch out for the 7th hole- it requires an accurate tee shot to the left side of the fairway, but too far left rolls into the woods.

Unacceptable greens

The greens were replaced a couple years ago, and they were the hardest greens we've ever played. In my twosome, only 1 of 20 shots which hit the green from over 70 yards stayed on the putting surface. After recognizing the greens would not hold, we tried to hit short and bounce onto the green, but many of the holes are elevated and most of those shots would not bounce forward.

The putting surfaces were rough and bumpy. Several putts rolling right at the hole were deflected near the hole by the rough surface.

This would be a fun course were it not for the greens.

Unfriendly to Golfnow customers

Scheduled tee time was 11:57 AM. We arrived early and finished warming up by 11:10. We were informed we had been paired with another twosome. There were no other golfers on the course- about 40 minutes passed without anyone teeing off. We asked to go out early and were informed we would have to pay an additional fee to change the tee time. The guy condescendingly said it was like buying a discount airline ticket. So we sat there waiting for the other twosome to arrive at the empty tee until our tee time.

At #7, we started to get pushed by a twosome. We offered to let them play thru, but they declined. For the remainder of the round, our foursome was pushed by a twosome and single who played thru the twosome.

Had we been allowed to go out as a twosome, the other golfers behind us would have not caught us. The decision to make us play as a foursome when the course was nearly empty adversely affected our golf as well as the players behind us. It was clearly a way of discouraging players who took advantage of the reduced Golfnow rates. BTW, we finished our round in 3 hours 45 minutes.

So Golfnow players beware- don't expect to be treated like a full paying customer at this golf course. There are too many other good courses closer to Huntsville that don't discriminate against Golfnow players to put up with that attitude.

As a side note, the bermuda rough was long enough that you had to literally walk over a ball to locate it. Our foursome lost several balls which were not hit badly, but landed slightly right or left of the greens- but because we were being pushed, we did not take the full 5 minutes allowed to locate balls.

Dear pgehringer3,

It is unfortunate that you felt pushed by the twosome that was playing behind you. We also state in our tee time policy that you are subject to be paired with other golfers and unfortunately we can not let a tee time out 2 hours prior to the time booked if there is a difference in rate unless the difference is paid. We take pride in our customer service and do not treat Golf Now customers any different. We would love for you to give our course another chance so please email me directly at kimmyteetimes@gmail.com

Better condition than years past

Played as single from Gold tees. There's a significant difference between the whites and golds. The greens were in excellent condition & shots held well. Fairways were average to good condition- there were some bare spots which could be corrected easily, but were pretty much the same 2-3 years ago. Traps were average condition.

I did not care for the large cups cut in the greens, but they did not interfere with play to the regular cups.

There are very few places on the course where you can't recover from off-line shots. My handicap index is 17 and I scored 79- which is about right for a 107 slope.

Great value on a Sunday

The course is in great shape. The practice facilities are top notch. The par 5's are reachable, but if you don't make a good second shot, you'll regret not playing it in regulation.

We got behind a tournament- and the back was really stacked up, so we were allowed to play the front again.

Great course for bogy golfers

Very generous fairways- but the bermuda greens needed water and mowing. It was in the high 90's, so perhaps that's the reason for the bumpy long grass on the greens. The greens do not hold a well placed shot. The rough was a tad long in some areas- nearly lost balls until we walked right over the ball.

The sand in the bunkers was very good- but there are not that many bunkers to hit into. Water did come into play on a couple holes, but only a bad shot brings it into play. I like the fact that the grass on the slopes around the green held up balls from rolling down to the bottom of the slope.

If not for a single bad hole, I would have scored well below my normal round, so the lack of course knowledge did not harm the score. Did I say the greens were slowwwwwwwwwww????

We played the gold tees, which are a significant distance advantage over the whites. I'm looking forward to playing this course again when the greens are fully mature and well watered.
