Santa Barbara Golf Club
Played On 12/02/2019Excellent Municipal Course
You are not going to find many municipal courses as well kept and challenging as this one. Especially for the price. And lots of improvements have been made including new traps with white sand and a new green on #9. Don’t let the 5900 yards fool you. It pays to hit the fairways with all the trees on the course. Some rolling hills present challenging second and third shots to the greens that can have tough pin placements. Great staff in the Pro Shop that has all the supplies you need to play. Mulligans’s Cafe has delicious food and a reputation that brings non-golfers to enjoy a meal. Hope to see you there.
Buenaventura Golf Course
Played On 04/19/2019Short but Fun
I've been playing this course for many years off and on. It's not my course of choice for the Ventura and Santa Barbara area given all the other courses around. It's a shorter than typical course with the black tee just short of 6000 yards, but it's not a push over either. Moderate length players can hit wedge into most greens so if I brought my game I can score in the 70's. Definitely worth playing. I played today because of the price point over all other courses in the area. That's when I usually play it. Enjoy!
Olivas Links Golf Course
Played On 07/05/2018Really enjoyed my round.
I have always enjoyed playing this course. The tee boxes, fairways and greens are in very good shape. 4 sets of tees for all levels of play. Bring your wind clubs as you can expect some challenging shots. Enjoy!
Buenaventura Golf Course
Played On 03/04/2016Local public course
Not a course I'd recommend to a visitor but worth the play if you can get a good price. Otherwise Olivas Links is the better choice for Ventura golf.
Short track so play frome the black tees. Lots of short wedges into the greens.
Rancho Maria Golf Club
Played On 02/29/2016Unpleasant Experience
I'm in SM once a month so I've played here a couple times. The first time I walked off after finishing hole 14 at 5 hours on a Tuesday. This time the Course Marshall was harassing my buddy and I when we finished the second hole (3 pars and a birdie) asking us to skip the next hole because there was a tournament that went off behind us. We respectfully declined as we weren't holding the group up by any means. We even put an open hole between us. But I guess the Marshall didn't appreciate our decline so he followed us closely the next few holes like we were on the clock. I talked to him about it but he said his job was to bother us. Great customer service. There are plenty of other much better courses in the area. I won't be back.
Rancho Maria Golf Club
Played On 01/26/2016So slow I didn't finish
Fun course to play but call first to see how busy it is. We only made it through 14 holes in 4.5 hours.
Very flat fairways on many holes so easy to walk and great for seniors with balance concerns.
I enjoyed my round but needed to leave for another commitment.
River Course at Alisal
Played On 10/21/2015A fun track worth playing
I've always enjoyed playing this course. Even in this long term drought the fairways are green and the greens are in outstanding shape. I played it from the white tees but play it from the blues if you're a long hitter. The facility is in great shape and the restaurant gets a big non-golfer lunch crowd.
Marshallia Ranch Golf Course
Played On 09/29/2015Worth the drive.
I enjoyed my round and would definitely return. I don't live close by but if I lived in Lompoc or Santa Maria area I'd likely play there often. Greens were in really good shape. Fairways were probably above average given the drought conditions. Some holes mandate hitting the fairway or you were in above average trouble both right and left. I didn't sample any foods.
La Purisima Golf Course
Played On 09/05/2015A Windy Challenge Not for the Faint of Heart
Really enjoyed this track. Bring your game or you will struggle all day. It's always windy at La Purisima so avoid the course if you don't want the wind challenge. You need to take an extra club or two at some holes with your approach shots. Greens are beautiful and fairways in good shape even given the severe drought CA is experiencing. Rough is penalizing so keep it in the fairway at all costs. A good position in the fairway rewards you with a open view at the greens.
Rancho San Marcos Golf Course
Played On 05/22/2015You are going to love this course!
If you are in town you must go play this course. Beauty and wildlife abound as you are surrounded by national forest land. The course is a great track, plenty challenging for the advanced player. The greens are always in great shape and fast. The southern California drought has taken its toll on the fairways so call ahead to ask about condition. It the fairway grass is dead then you might want to pass it up. I've played it several times without green fairway grass and it's still lots of fun, especially the drives that roll out over 300 yards. That's how much I love this course. Pray for rain in So Cal!
Santa Barbara Golf Club
Played On 05/06/2015Great Community Course
If you are in Santa Barbara don't hesitate to play this community course. The greens are in excellent condition; they break to the ocean right. Due to the lack of water there are a few dry spots around the course but they have them well marked for free drops, something you rarely see at other courses. Don't let the shorter distance fool you as there are plenty of challenges. Fairways are a must with all the beautiful trees that abound. And the mountain (and some island) views are awesome. Maybe I'll see you there.
Shadow Ridge Golf Club
Played On 04/01/2015A great challenge and lots of fun
Extremely well maintained and rewards fairway shots. Lots of bunkers and very severe undulating greens that really protects low scoring. Some short holes so don't be concerned about playing from the back tees. Likely one of the best courses in the Palm Springs area.
Legend at Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort
Played On 03/29/2015Very good course; great value.
I played the Legend course. Fairways and greens in excellent shape. All greens pretty much straight in front of you and plenty wide for the forgiving tee shot. If you can hit fairways and greens you will score well here as there really isn't much trouble. So long par 4s and 3s so you need to bring game. A really great value at half the price of other courses in the area that aren't necessarily in as good condition. Enjoy! I know we did.
Glen Annie Golf Club
Played On 03/14/2015Challenging with incredible views!
If your in town don't hesitate to play this course. Lot's of holes that will challenge even the best players. The views are off the chart amazing of the channel islands, coastline and mountains; Santa Barbara views at their best! Don't let the length fool you. Play from the back tees if you are single digit, otherwise the white tees are plenty of a challenge.
Eagle Crest Golf Club
Played On 06/24/2014Excellent Challenging Course
I really enjoyed this course. It has lots of character and beautiful terrain...visually gorgeous. Not flat like lots of courses on the coast. Trouble abounds so you need to make shots to score well. The price was very reasonable for such a wonderful course. I paid 4 times the price to play at a local country club and enjoyed my round here more. It's well worth the drive inland from the coast. I'd definitely return when I'm back in the area.
Ojai Valley Inn
Played On 12/06/2013Great Course. A good challenge for even a low handicap player.
Hi,
The course is in great shape. Lots of holes with changes in elevation and hitting over gulleys and tree tops. Has that canyon setting with shots much like the pros are playing at Sherwood this weekend. Greens in excellent shape but not running as fast as I thought they would. I'd recommend the course and the Inn and Spa for a great weekend getaway. I hope to play there again soon.
Tom,
Thank you for recommending Santa Barbara Golf Club. Thanks for mentioning the excellent conditions of our greens and some great player tips.
Hope to see you out here more often!
