McCullough's Emerald Golf Links
Played On 06/26/2019Already booked a second visit
We loved the course layout, the challenging elevations, the conditions of everything, the friendly service. We’re playing again there tomorrow.
Brigantine Golf Links
Played On 06/25/2019What we liked, what we didn’t
What we liked:
1) cheap 6:45am rate $35 per player
2) fast pace of play on a slow Tuesday summer morning
3) condition of greens - smooth and fast
4) challenging hole design
5) tough slopes on greens and difficult pin placements
What we didn’t like:
1) some holes had hidden tee landing spots for rear tees, presenting an extra challenge for first-timers here; a course guide would be helpful
2) couldn’t find on-course restrooms (may have been locked)
3) cart paths are a mess
Contrary to previous reviews, we found the fairways in very good shape, but the tee boxes needed some rest and recovery. We also disagree with previous reviewers that houses next to the some of the holes were too close to fairways. We realize this is a matter of opinion, but our group never had trouble with the houses coming into play because they were too close. If we hit anywhere near someone’s backyard, it was because our shots went way off target.
Hickory Sticks Golf Club
Played On 07/07/2018Wow, what a treat!
My wife and I played Hickory Sticks on a perfect clear, 80-ish summer Saturday. Never played here before. We knew the course would be hilly, and it certainly is. But the first 3 holes aren't terribly so, which gives a good warm up to the round. Other holes do go up or down, sometimes both in the same hole. But the shorter distances of some of the hillier holes (especially on the back nine) equalized the challenge of the hills. The primary exception to this notion is the long par-4 9th-hole, where you can't see the green from the tee, and you can't see how much climb you have in your very long second-shot approach. At 410 from the second-longest tees, it's a very long par 4, just barely short of par 5 status.
The tees, the greens and the fairways were all in excellent condition. The greens today ran very fast, and they have a lot of subtle breaks, so putting was a challenge. Staff was exceptionally friendly.
Our twosome was sandwiched amongst a line of foursomes, but we were off the course in 5 hours, which is average and appropriate. We didn't have to wait too long between most shots.
Food selections at the turn were pretty slim. Hot dogs and brats and sandwiches and packaged snacks.
We cannot wait to return to play again.
Stumpy Lake Golf Course
Played On 06/21/2018Old course, basic layout, wide fairways, beautiful trees
My dad and I teed off at 10am on a very-hot June day, and we basically had the course to ourselves, so no issue with pace of play.
If you like your 18 holes mostly straight and flat and open, if you like your 18 holes framed by trees on both sides, and if you like wide fairways, this is the course for you. It's an old track, so it lacks curves and mounds of more modern courses.
Condition of the course was mixed. The greens were generally in good shape. The fairways were consistently OK, but there are better elsewhere in town. The tee boxes were not as strong. The course now has six tees on each hole, with two forward tees sitting in front of the traditional tee box. The forward tee boxes are not yet mature, and barely covered in grass in many places. Also, the course took a heavy rain the night before we played, and there was a lot of residual standing water in various places. The forward tee boxes were generally muddy with not enough grass filled in.
This is a small complaint, however. We enjoyed the classic holes and layout. This is absolutely a scorer's course, if you can keep the ball straight inside the generously-wide fairways.
Bay Creek Resort & Club - Nicklaus Course
Played On 06/19/2018a most enjoyable round of golf
My dad and I played Bay Creek / Palmer on a very hot June weekday, so we had no trouble getting around at our own pace.
The course is challenging for all players, with numerous tee boxes for all skill levels. The course has numerous twists and turns in the track, allowing better golfers the chance to move the ball where they can.
The course was in excellent condition, from tee to green. The greens were aerated a week before we played. There was plenty of evidence of the aeration on every green, but never did we lose a putt because of the aeration-holes on the green.
Your greens fee covers a GPS-enabled cart, which provides you location data for every shot.
I look forward to my next chance to visit and play this course.
Hell's Point Golf Club
Played On 06/18/2018great course - challenging from tee to green
I will definitely return when I'm back in town. My dad and I were well challenged here at HP. The course has narrower fairways with bunkers in tough places. The bunkers in the fairways and near the greens are large and well-placed. There is some real beauty on this course.
We very much enjoyed our round on a hot Monday.
Asheville Municipal Golf Course
Played On 10/15/2017challenging mix of layouts, decent condition
The front nine and back nine are completely different, which is really cool. I loved the different challenges. Even a couple of the shorter par 4’s were difficult because of the terrain. This is a very popular golf course; it was appropriately busy and lively on two weekend days we visited.
Conditions: fairways and greens in good shape, some tee boxes were in need of attention.
We really enjoyed our round. Staff was friendly.
