Village Green Golf Club
Played On 03/21/2022Fourth time this month
The course is easy to get on to, but will always be pretty full. If you don't like waiting for the group ahead of you to finish putting - look elsewhere. if a leisurely round is okay - try it. The staff is great and so are the greens. The fairways are dried out in March as is all of this part of Florida. Being a short course you won't have many shots from the fairway.
Village Green Golf Club
Played On 03/07/2022good value for short course
This is a very short course (par 58) with many holes around 100 yards. Hitting the green on the fly many time shot over and past. Florida has had little rain in the past month + so greens are very firm and the fairways sparse of grass. As it is every where I can afford at least. The greens are slow putting if you can hold your approach shot, but they are very well kept. It has probably the best putting I have experience in Florida.
Sandpiper Golf Club - Lakes/Palms Course
Played On 03/14/2019A good choice with extra help for high handicaper
The course is in reasonably good shape. Wide fairways and mostly filled divots. The greens are very large with few ball marks. The green speed was slow-moderate to moderate. There are 5 sets of tees including a lavender for way, way up front help for very high handicaps. My wife loved that part. Everyone working at the course was very helpful and of good humor.
Jacaranda West Country Club
Played On 03/20/2018It has real grass!
We have been playing courses in the Venice/Englewood/Placida area all month and this was far and away the best maintained course. Now remember we play the less expensive courses and this one is not normally offered at this price. I had thought my game had gone all to heck but really it was playing off pure sand with an occaisional blade of grass that was the problem. My score was back to normal just playing on normal length grass. Play here if you can.
Livingston Country Club
Played On 07/10/2015course was soggy
We have golfed here many times, but this was the first since spring time. The course was very wet due to heavy rain the day before. Even so the greens were quite quick for their soaked condition. We agreed, 3 of us, that considering conditions this is a challenging course worthy of a 40 minute drive from Rochester. The food is great, have lunch while you are there.
Buffalo Creek Golf Course
Played On 03/20/2015Long Course
This is a long course in better than average shape. It is a great value for the money except for the early closing of the 19th hole at 4:00! I guess their priority is not making money on the bar. Can't give an opinion on something that was closed. Even so it played very well. We finished in 4 hours 15 min. and had people right in back of us the whole way. Not crowding, but really full all day. One slow group (which we did not have that day) could slow the entire course down to a crawl.
Kings Gate Golf Club
Played On 03/16/2015Best executive course we have found
Our play was on a very hot (record) Monday and was not a day for walkers. There is lots of water with fish and turtles to keep your (my) ball company. The course is tight to the out of bounds with only a few feet from there to the houses. Hitting a house is a real possibility. There are quite a few bunkers, but the sand was pretty soft so getting out was not a big problem. As far as shape goes, it was far and away the best we have found in 2.5 weeks of playing this area of Florida.
The greens are on the slow side. If you are considering walking be aware that some holes have a long distance from green to the next tee. Don't walk on a hot day, you will regret it. The restaurant and 19th hole appear to be closed on Mondays.
The Cove of Rotonda Golf Center
Played On 03/13/2015Average Par 3 course but still fun
This is an average par 3 course for this part of Florida. The grass is okay with as good as no ruff to hurt you. There is plenty of water and swamp to lose some balls especially if the wind picks up which it did. The driving range is pretty cool. They use floating balls and you hit them into the big lake and the wind blows them back to shore. There are lots of target to aim at. The greens were okay certainly not the grass bare that some reviews mentioned. It's worth a try. The staff bent over backwards to have us enjoy the day.
Ravenwood Golf Course
Played On 10/10/2014Watch your approach
Very, very nice course. It is fairly straight for the average hitter. Lots of bunkers, but fine, fine real golf course sand not construction sand. Don't worry about landing in a bunker it's like playing out of butter. I love this sand! There are some holes with water to hit over with all the predictable dangers. The approach to the greens is most often off to the side limiting the bump and run options. The greens were very hard for mid October. Come in at a shallow angle and you are chipping twice, every hole.
Island Oaks at Lima Golf & Country Club
Played On 05/23/2014A great value and fun too
I have played this course a few times a year for over 5 years. It is a fair drive from Rochester, but worth the time and effort. I really enjoy Island Oaks more than its twin, Charleston Pines. This is the more interesting and perhaps more difficult one. From the white tees it can be difficult for us older folks to reach the greens in two. The gold tees would make it very doable. The restaurant and bar are better than average and you should consider lunch after your round.
Oyster Creek Golf & Country Club
Played On 03/23/2014Not for low handicaps
This course has many very short holes - in the 125 to 135 yard range. There are a few longer ones where you can pull out your driver. The course is really made for high handicappers of which my wife and I are two. We like it from that standpoint. There is a lot of water and the holes can be a little narrow for those who spray the ball. The scenery is really nice and worth playing just for that alone. The crocs are all small.
