Tierra Rejada Golf Club
Played On 04/14/2017Terrible Design
As a fan of golf course architecture, this course is not something I will ever play again. The views are nice, the elevation changes and conditions are both nice. However, the narrow fairways are borderline unplayable. Multiple blind tee shots to extremely tight corridors make holes less than fun. I understand the difference between challenging and ridiculous and this is more on the ridiculous side. Tons of forced carries make it difficult for high handicappers. Holes that run next to each other with little to know strategy. Shots are predetermined for you which makes it boring. Also throw in a fake waterfall, stream and lake and you have yourself the gimmick trifecta. Staff was friendly, food was good, price waa fair but the course design was not.
Rancho San Marcos Golf Course
Played On 03/14/2017It's back
Course has been dead/dormant for years because of the drought. Thanks to the early rains this year they've been able to overseed and water tees and fairways. The greens are always some of the best in the county. It's a fun layout with some wonky holes but otherwise a good test of golf and a surprisingly easy walk. Go check it!
Sandpiper Golf Course
Played On 10/03/2016Elite Property/Solid Layout
This is my home course. The course is always in very playable shape. Greens always run quick and pretty true. During certain times of the year the fairways can get spotty but the property is so good that it doesn't hurt the overall experience. This is as good a golf property as there is in California. The course has a few good holes but largely relies on the views and proximity to the ocean/beach to justify the pricetag. From the tips it's a proper challenge. Greens all slant back to front so it's important to stay below the hole. Course could definitely use a renovation but in the meantime it's by far the best public golf course in Santa Barbara.
Ojai Valley Inn
Played On 09/13/2016Amazing Classic Course
I love this course. It's not long but it requires strategic and precise shots to accomplish scoring. George Thomas is an all-time great course architect and this course is a testament to that. You start by playing out from the Inn and weave down into the valley and surrounding property in a supremely enjoyable routing. Memorable holes are littered all around the course and kikuyu grass provides a proper challenge from the rough. Strategic short par 4's, both short and long par 3's and tons of elevation change makes this arguably the best public course for the money in Southern California. Highly recommend it for elevated resort style golf.
