Great Course with a few quirky holes

1st time playing. Very interesting layout and in very nice condition. Definitely a course you need to play a few times before you can fully comfortable with it. Several blind shots, esp. Hole 1 tee shot. A few more - 5, 9, & 10 are tough to know what you are hitting into as fairways run out on 5 & 9. 10 is a very elevated tee & it is tough to see the shape of the hole and know where to aim for. I dont say this to complain about it, just be aware. The 2nd shot on the Par 5 12th is blind as well. I could just see this as a course that gets even better after a few rounds and a little familiarity. My only complaint is out cart died on 17 and nobody would answer in the proshop to bring us another (a few minutes after 6pm). Ended up having to walk and carry our bag, which was only an issue because there is a big hill to climb to get to the 18th tee, then the approach to the green on 18 is uphill, followed by a very steep climb to the clubhouse. Very nice course, esp for the price & I would heavily recommend

Best publicly accessible course around

I play here 5-6 times a year…Great course that is usually not crowded. Late summer heat is taking a toll on a few greens, but still very playable. By late Sept, will hopefully be in PERFECT shape again.

WARNING:Carts must be in by 7pm...

...even though subset was not until 7:58 & there was enough light to play until past 8:15. I paid a little after 5pm & no one said anythibg about carts having to be in at 7pm. I was taking my time - hitting lots of balls, just working on stuff (1st time on a ciurse in 3,months due to shoulder injuey). I never saw another player in front of or behind me. After the 6th hole, a cart boy whim I had a friendly conversation with on 6th tee, came back and told me that carts needed to be in in about 10 minutes. I thought that’s weird, but whatever, I will just play the last 3 holes real quick and get on in. I hit my tee shot on 8 and as I drive up to the green an old man drives up yelling “pick up your ball and get the cart in. I gotta shut this ppace down”. We had a little back and forth, then he said “yiou are 3 holes behind the grriup in front of you”, as if I had started right behind them. (I gave no idea how far ib front of me they started.
Regardless, I wasnt hurting anyone...the real ooint is that it is ridiculous to require carts to be in an hour before sunset. And, if you are going to do that, you need to clearly explain that to people when they are paying for a cart.
Course was in pretty good shape. Greens had probably been aerated about 2 weeks ago, so they werent perfect, but should be very good in another week or so.
I gave Staff Friendliness 2 stars since the guy in the clubhouse and cart boy were nive enough, but the crotchety okd man will succeed in shutting the place down if he keeps treating their customers like that.

Improving

First time I had played here this year due to the comments about the greens. Overall, the course was in very good shape, especially the fairways. Of course, the layout is stellar and the scenery great. The greens were not perfect with several bad spots on each, but outside of those, they were fine and putted well. The greens are NOT a reason to stay away.

Go Play! It’s the best public- accessible course in North Alabama!

Play here!

I had been eyeing this course for a few years hoping to make it over during one of my frequent trips to Memphis and was not disappointed at all. We played North/West and it was GREAT! Great staff, great course design and condition. Narrow fairways, elevation changes, and sloping greens provide plenty of challenge. Definitely worth a drive over from Memphis.

Magnificent!

Great round of golf. Beautiful, interesting course in excellent condition. Birdies are available, but difficult greens increase the challenge & triple-bogeys lurk on most every hole if you it a bad shot. Go here and play...and stay below the hole.

Change the cups!

Nice layout, esp. the back nine. Tees & fairways were decent. Greens were a bit thin on front, but better on back. Not great, but ball rolled well on, I’d say 12 of the 18. Biggest complaint was that they needed to move the cups. All of the holes were ragged, One hole perimeter had disintegrated so badly, soil had filled the bottom of the hole so flag stick could not be inserted. This aspect made it look as though they just didnt care. HORRIBLE!
Several of the water jugs were empty on a VERY HOT day.
Did have a mix up with GolfNow - called the course number directly & booked made teetime, told $38. Got there and told $46. Guy initially insisted on $46. Turns out that after 3 rings, phone fwds to GolfNow, but you dont know it. They twll you GolfNow rate, but that’s not indicated to course. In the end, he just charged us $32, but it was an awkward, confusing situation.
Needs a little water & regularly changed cups and could be a 4* in a month.
Just hope this course doesnt fall victim to the current golf recession.

Great Layout, Great Value

Now played here twice - May 2018 & June 1, 2019. LOVE this layout. Very interesting hole designs that force you to think your way around the course. Greens were firm & fast with a bit of contour. Really helps to stay below hole. Lots of unseen water lurking, so make sure you have satellite imagery so you are aware of those. Fairways were firm both times & ball will roll out, so beware on layup shots - esp, tee shot on #1. Birdie opps, but DBs are out there too. Cost on Sat AM was ONLY $42 with cart - SUPER DEAL! Would have given 5⭐️ for course conditions if fairways had a little more thickness - no bare spots, but fairways cut very low & ball just didn’t sit up nice & plush. Only 3⭐️ for off-course amenities due to irons-only driving range.
Well worth one-hour drive from HSV and I plan to make it again soon.

Course has lost its luster

I can remember when this was a very nice municipal course, but it seems to have gone downhill in recent years.

For the most part, the greens were in decent shape. Although the bent grass greens were very slow (and, perhaps, as a result, very difficult to read), I can understand the need to not cut them too short in the summer heat. However, there were a few things about the greens that pointed to poor maintenance & declining quality. There were a couple of holes that looked like they were cut several weeks ago. There were several greens that had a noticeable out of bermuda grass invading the perimeters - in some cases 3-5ft.
The 14th green was completely gone - just sand. The 16th green was 75% gone., with an area of bermuda grass, about 30 feet in diameter serving as the only recognizable putting surface.
The fairways were very dry. While we have had a bit of a dry spell, we had alot of rain earlier this year. It ses that just a little periodic watering could have kept them from getting to this stage. It looked to me as though they hadnt been watered one time, while there were areas near a couple of greens that were saturated. It all just seemed very uneven and inconsistent.
The good news is that it is still a nice, very playable layout and the conditions are not a total disaster YET. However, the City if Huntsville needs to work the the courses manager (Robertson Golf) and revitalize the course before it deteriotates more. In addition to just getting the course conditions back up to where they used to be, they need to figure out a way to re-design #14 (which used to be one of the best holes on the course as #5 at time), which has been a disaster of a golf hole since being "re-designed" to make room for a water collection area required by a neighboring condo development about 20 years ago. Rant over! :- )
