Colonial Heritage Club
Played On 05/31/2023May be the most difficult course on the peninsula.
I played this course as a guest. Did not know what to expect. The staff and facilities are very good, the course is near pristine. We played on a day of cart path only. This course is not easy and cart path only made it tougher. Plan to climb to the greens on many holes. The amount of elevation changes is extreme. Several tees are to blind layups. Ravines are unforgiving. Any thing other than in the fairway is very challenging. Course is not designed for walking, though I don't believe it is an option. If you have any endurance challenges or disabilities be prepared.
Belmont Lake Golf Club
Played On 08/08/2020Good course for area
Course is good for area where there is not a lot of options. Seems to be managed well and kept up. Provides several holes that require you to shape you tee shot. Relatively wide fairways. Blind shots with several lay ups. Bombers can have fun on short par 4s. Some water holes. Greens receptive and not browned out in 100* temps.
Front may have been made earlier, not sure. BACK NOT FOR WALKING. HAVE TO GO AWAYS TO GET TO SOME OF THE TEES.
Dogwood Trace Golf Course
Played On 07/14/2020Great municipal course
On first time going, this course exceeded expectations. It has been used for local school events in the past. Obviously with the shutdown it may have had the best time to get to peak condition. Tight in general, some elevation challenges. Greens in very good condition as well as fairways.
Unfortunately, no amenities at this time.
Hell's Point Golf Club
Played On 05/25/2019Worth the ride for first time.
I think this is a good course for a municipal-owned course. It takes some time to get to as not off major thoroughfare. Staff friendly. When weather is ideal, nice place to enjoy scenery and wildlife. Stands out for having challenging par 3s. Likely will need 1-2 clubs up. For water holes, a good drive can bend away from trouble if you can not bomb over.
Tee boxes and fairwary edges are in need of repair but fairway has very few browned or GUR areas. Bunkers need help but I have not seen any public course in HR that doesn't! Greens are in good condition, slightly slow.
Virginia Beach National Golf Club
Played On 12/27/2016A Challenge
This course provides a challenge to anyone regardless of tee box. Layout is not easy on the eye and par 5s are quite long. Several blind shots to the green over hills if not in the fairway. Several waste bunkers. This course will get windy. I should play better during the regular season once landmarks can be better appreciated. Course does not drain well so be prepared for cartpath only in inclement weather.
Duck Woods Country Club
Played On 06/24/2016Plays long
This course is conveniently located to most northern expressway entrance to the Outer Banks. This is a residential course primarily and has a full service club for members. This area has a lot of seasonal events including business and wedding events. This course is well maintained. Has blind water hazards due to elevations. Wide open in some areas. Generous practice area.
Isn't this a private course? I'd love to play it when I come down in June.
Cypress Creek Golfers' Club
Played On 05/19/2016Worth the trip
This course continues to be a recommended spot seasonally. We have had a lot of rain so far this Spring. Course wet but greens in good condition. Very few areas of standing water or GUR. Visually appealing. Not narrow so plenty of room for errand shots. Residential course but not tight so not a lot of out of bounds.
Cahoon Plantation Golf Club
Played On 03/29/2016A real tester
This course is great for the golfer. It is probably withing the top 5, certainly 10 courses in Hampton Roads. Well groomed. Great practice grounds and kid friendly. Regarding play, you will be penalized in the rough. Thickest in the area. Greens are fair and fast.
Riverfront Golf Club
Played On 03/17/2016Lengthy course
This is a residential course. It is rather long and quite intertwined in the neighborhood. I do not recommend walking. The fairways at this time of the year are still low and can be muddy and hold moisture after rain. There is trouble if not driving well. Several fairways have marsh valleys. Several holes are well elevated and blind. Those who do not drive long can expect layups on a number of par 4s. Similarly some par 3s must carry hazards! Greens are well maintained, aerated recently but filling in well. Undulated.
Chesapeake Golf Club
Played On 08/29/2015Holds up
This is my second time playing. The weather was ideal for the summer. Fairways have held up during the season as well as the greens. Unfortunately the greens were very soft from dew or over irrigation to save them. Great play for value. Penalized for not staying in the fairway. Out of bounds is tight. This course has the toughest par 5s in the area. Laying up is key for average length hitters.
Chesapeake Golf Club
Played On 07/07/2015Good for value. Hidden residential course.
This course is inviting and seems to be fairly generous. Although the fairways were wet due to rain they were fairly well maintained. Greens were surprisingly well cut, even and had a few undulations. This course gives you many chances to par or better because it has straight fairways in the majority. Beware of the need to lay up due to water however. This is a better riding course than walking as the holes are interspersed in a residential area. Unfortunately the cart paths are beat up.
Cypress Point Country Club
Played On 09/05/2014Plays longer than it looks
Course does not look intimidating but the par 4s are longer than you think. Must be in fairway to get roll out. Undulating rough. Elevation of tees and wind do require adjustment. Cart paths and proximity to homes demands well directed shot off tee. One concern, Groundsman tend not to extend usual courtesy to player in the fairway or greens by stopping machinery.
Nansemond River Golf Club
Played On 08/24/2014Probably the best overall public course in Suffolk
Course length is good but blue/black tees will be quite a challenge. Overall best fairways in area and greens are well maintained. Both narrow and wide fairways on course. Deep greens. Only issue is that the yardage markers are absent, broken or worn down and must rely on experience or a GPS device. PGA professional very personable.
Sleepy Hole Golf Course
Played On 08/16/2014Not Sleepy
This course plays long. Difficult if not on the right portion of the fairway. Thick rough. Well bunkered and tree obstacles. Narrow course overall. Often have to wait for others to clear tee or fairway when playing from the rough or wrong fairway. Course management a premium. Greens have several tiers. Not quite smooth from regular play or missed cuttings.
Suffolk Golf Course
Played On 08/08/2014No frills
This is one of if not the oldest public course in Suffolk. Traditional tree lined. Slightly narrow fairways, plenty of elevated greens. Penalty for not keeping in fairway. Average but recommended for any beginner. Despite having new greens last year, they are stubby now. Unable to get a pure roll. If looking for bang for the buck this is the course.
Red Wing Lake Golf Course
Played On 07/05/2014Surprisingly well public course
This was the first time playing in Virginia Beach and the course was well maintained for a public course. It was raining quite a bit and there was very little puddling on the greens or fairways. Was still 90*. Generous fairways. Wide flat greens. Water hazards are avoidable with course management. Only problem was a marshal who was putting us on the clock when the problem was the group in front of us. This was an unnecessary commentary particularly when conditions were basically lift, clean and place.
