Wait for the rain to come!

Pete Dye would blush at this layout under current conditions and say "Yeah, Maybe I went a bit to far!". The layout here is incredibly tough. Blind tees shots to narrow fairways are common and often, nay, nearly always include danger out of view. With no GPS in the carts, no hole images on the tees, card or in the cart I found myself cursing not buying a course guide as it is essential unless you wish to guess at carries and enjoy continual nasty surprises. Relief that you made the green is short lived as they are very quick, have few flat areas and again are somewhat blind with perimeter undulations to kick around the shots you thought were not your best but good enough.
Layout aside the course is beautiful. Well maintained with great views of the lake and subtle features (like the accent grass around the bunkers) make this one of the most picturesque courses around.
Okay, back to the complaining! The main issue at the moment is the firmness of the fairways and greens. Getting those kinds of bounces and so much run on blind shots to small targets is enough to drive anyone insane. A recommended course but wait for the rain (if we ever get any), buy the course guide ($3) and steel yourself for a fight.
Course management - please consider putting hole images somewhere and carry yardages on the tees of the relevant holes for those whom didn't buy the vital information. It would make the round so much more enjoyable if not taxing our math skills!

Good premium course

Arriving at the very grand club house gives you an expectation that this is a very exclusive club and I can say that the course condition reflects this completely. Although wetter on the fairways than expected given recent weather, the course was in near perfect condition. Greens were firmer and subtly undulating giving a few reading headaches and the layout punished poor shots without being too penal. Some holes need some local knowledge to end up in the correct position but all are fair and testing. A good mix of short and long par 3's, par 4's and par 5's with even a reachable par 4 on the 10th. Off course the club is very relaxed and avoids the stigma of its exclusive persona. Staff and members were very friendly and the clubhouse had a very relaxed atmosphere. Would love to play in the summer as I predict the course would be in perfect condition. Worth the $80.... Just. If the same price in the spring/summer it will be great value.

Not long, not links but tough and enjoyable

Yes this course is by the ocean and has some fantastic views from the 9th tee, 9th green and 18th green but if you expect pot bunkers and tight fairways (says a English links purist!) this ain't it. What is it? A great course that will challenge your game and reward you with wonderful views. It is not the longest course but don't be tempted to run straight for the tips, the holes are tight and greens tiny. Conditions are always great due to lower volume of play which also means pace is usually good too. You need to be staying on the island and need your passes to get on and at $100 it's a little overpriced but not too far off the mark. The front nine dances around a lake, moves into tight pine lined holes before coming back to the same lake and ocean front. The back nine moves inland at first, touches the coast at 14 and finally cuts through the trees to come out the ocean on 18. Great little course. And watch out for the Gators!

Good layout but fairways patchy for the price.

Played a mid morning tee time as a guest of a polo cc member on the clubcorp recip offer. $85. A little disappointed with the condition of the fairways for the price. Really expected this private club to be very well kept but there were some bald patches on most of the fairways (sometimes severe) and green aprons. Pace was good. Course was reasonably busy but we got round in 4 hours. Best part of the course for me was the layout and greens. Holes roll up and down with slight dog legs usually ending with a raised green. Greens were in great condition. Good speed, not too firm and have challenging undulations. Overall would recommend but I do expect more of a polished course for the money. Hope they put some work into the fairways. Oh, and the club house is being renovated resulting in bar being a tent and drinking scotch out of a styrofoam cup. Sacrilege!

Great value and good condition

I play here once a month or so and it is always good value for money. Course is tough from the blues and a relaxing round from the green (Augusta) tees. Layout has a lot of elevation changes and a good mix of holes. Course is currently in great condition with greens running well, staff are always friendly and I usually get round in a respectable time although this visit was very slow. Groups in front playing tips when they shouldn't have been. Only complaint would be that a lack of a ranger made this worse than it need have been. Course also gets a little soggy in places after prolonged rain but still 100% playable. A local gem.

Short and tight

Early tee time, started as a single and paired up with another single on 5th. Was behind a 2 ball and 4 ball but still managed 3 hours and 15 minutes. Course is in good condition. Some bald spots under trees but nothing that got in the way of the golf. Greens running well but very firm. Had a lot of short irons run off the back. Layout is tight target golf. Greens are small and rough is thick. Started the round playing gold tees but switched to blue after 9. Course is short from both but the the golds are tough. In fact only hit 4 drivers all day. Only complaints were that the staff could have been more friendly and there are a lot of blind/semi blind tee shots.

Great venue

Played Hillside and Woodside 9's. Hillside is the easier of the 2 and has some target golf holes through lakes and nice dog legs requiring good placement off the tee. Woodside is a tougher test with very traditional style holes. Again good dog legs that really test your game. Course conditions were excellent, staff friendly and the whole place had a relaxed atmosphere. Saw some golfers in jeans showing that you don't need to demand attire levels to run a great facility (they just demand soft spikes). More about the love of golf than the status if the facility - as it should be! Well done Cantigny!

Fantasy course

Played in extremely poor weather which made a extremely difficult course horrific. Layout reminds me of one of the fantasy courses on Tiger Woods golf game! Front nine is all target golf hopping across islands and back nine moves into the trees a little. Seems every hole is a "signature" hole which is great at first but surprisingly gets a little old after a while. Course conditions great, even in heavy rain. Would recommend to play but take plenty balls, have fun and dont beat yourself up when you shoot high numbers.

Greens are suffering

Was first out as a single and so round was quick but was disappointed in the greens. They are very soft and suffering from large pitch marks (and the issues that come with people not repairing them). In some cases patches of the greens have been lost. Shame that a course I once viewed as semi premium is now degrading to a beaten track. $39 for early time fair but would not pay more for a later time. Finally was a little miffed by the green keeper not following the pin location number. Some were opposite of indicated location.
