Gorgeous scenery and smooth greens - well worth playing

Played on a sunny and breezy afternoon. Warm (distanced) welcome. Friendly members. Not long on the card but a solid test of golf - fairways hard to find, elevation changes and clumps of deep rough, gorse and heather. This is good, honest club golf. Greens were smooth as billiard tables (sheep kept at bay by electric fences) though thankfully not frighteningly swift. A joy to putt on. Any missed putts were user error. Standout holes were the fun par 3s at 4 and 15. The drive across a fern filled chasm at 5 was not for the faint-hearted. Support this club - it's a hidden gem.

Early morning holiday round

On holiday nearby so spotted a weather window and appreciated being able to book an early morning time online. Teed off in brilliant sunshine and the gentlest of breezes with no-one around - idyllic. It is an amazing setting and the views, landscape and wandering sheep and horses all add to the experience. The course itself reminded me of Southerndown and aspects of nearby Pennard and I enjoyed several front 9 holes - such as the sweeping downhill par 5 3rd, the tough uphill par 4 6th, and the downhill approach to the 9th which conveniently returns to the clubhouse. The back 9 is arguably even better and it certainly has the best view over Mumbles and Swansea Bay from the 17th tee - a challenging par 3 where the ball has to be flown all the way over a gorse filled depression to the relatively narrow tiered green. All the par 3s were good and called for a range of clubs to be used - the long 8th called for a very stout hit with a rescue club (which I failed to achieve!). On the debit side, course conditioning was variable though I haven't played the course before so can't tell if my experience was 'normal' for such an amazing natural setting - there was very little fairway definition to speak of, the turf was fairly soft and springy underfoot (good for walking but maybe not quite so good for drainage in wetter months) and the greens were true but pretty slow. Given the conditioning, I felt the green fee was bearable but not a bargain. I recommend Clyne very warmly - but you may want to check the forecast carefully so you can best appreciate the fantastic views and the scenery.
